I'm usually hanging out in the Photography Forum where I've been learning a lot about photograph over the past year-and-a- half. One of the other regulars there, SunnyJo took a photo of wild trilliums in the wood close to her home. They were so pretty that it inspired me to do a watercolor of it.
I decided to do a WIP while I was working on it, with the intention of posting it here in Watercolor, so that everyone who's interested could see how I developed it.
I hope you like it.

First I placed the to large blossoms on the paper. Then decided that for compositional sake I would ad the small blossom at the top, with the intention of having it be in the background.
I used very light washes of yellow and purple on the petals.

I let this layer dry overnight. (I do this with each successive layer).

Next day I add more color to the petals and give the background some color and shapes.

Third day I start to develop shape and color to the background.

Because there are three more steps to the completed painting, I will show them on another thread as not to hog up to much room here.
I hope this has been helpful to some and that you all enjoy seeing how I develop a painting.

Thanks for viewing and your comments or critiques will be gratefully accepted.

I'm working on Arches 300# HP with transparent watercolor.

Step. 4...I continue to add color to the background and develop interesting shapes.

Step 5 Here I wet the petals and add some orange to warm it up and further shape the petals. I won't do anymore to the petals.

I continue to add my darks and shape the background. Lastly I add a glaze of cobalt blue to push the small flower to the back.
At this point I feel that the painting is pretty well resolved and I usually take a few days to look at it and see if there is anything I need to change. If not then it's finished except for my signiture.

The finished piece will be matted with a 14 x 17 window and white mat sized up to 20 x 24

Thanks for looking.

It's a very lovely WIP...lovely finish! Thank you for sharing this!
Next time you do a WIP though, better to keep it on one thread...just easier to follow.:)

Where's the next step? Can hardly wait to see, I love the background already :D

(We actually prefer all stages of WIP's on one thread here, makes it easier for us to follow! And less threads get pushed down in this terribly busy forum! :) )

Hello Bairam,

Your WIP was very interesting and informative. It was fun especially to see how you developed the background. Your trilliums are lovely too, nice and watercolory (if its not a word it should be! ;) ).

Maria--You are multi talented! Love your photos and now this painting is beautiful. The large size should make it a stand out.

Maria!! nice to see you here :)

thanks for the WIP.....I just love watching other artists create

background is fresh and interesting

trilliums are creamy and luminous

this will look great all framed up!!

one suggestion....to my eye, the blossoms seem a bit "cut out" and removed from the background.....a touch of darker shadowing at the point where the petals meet up against the background might help that

Thank you all for the nice comments on this piece. It has been a while since I've done a watercolor, with the exception of a commission for one of someone's home, which is not the way I prefer to work.(to confining) I like working loose and letting things happen on the paper spontaneously.
Good suggestion mustcreate, I'll take it under advisement.
