A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Impressionistic Portraits
Project Leader: pastelist
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Portrait
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Impressionism has always been a favorite art movement of mine. The artist captures the subject wih vibrant uses of color. Imagine painting a portrait in this style. The object is to explore and have fun with color. I am hoping if you usually painted with pastels and used limited color, you will really delve into the exciting exploration of color and enjoy your new creation.
Some of the greatest impressionist artists were Edouard Manet, Camille Pissaro, Edgar Degas, Alfred Sisley, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot and Pierre Auguste Renoir.
The guidelines are relaxed for this exploration:
1) Pastels
2) The pictures that I set up for reference or a favorite of yours (personal or favorite artist).
3) When your portrait is complete describe your experience of your creation and how you felt while applying vibrant uses of exciting color.
Good Luck! and I look forward to viewing your rewarding experience.

Additional Information:

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

for starting a great new project. Sounds like this will be a lot of fun. I don't usually do figures or portraits...like never really! but I'll try to get in on this as a project. Will be some new wings to try out!

naw, too coincidental for infection...I just remembered I DID lay down a background so more particles, maybe that's it and I need to set it upright & a better mask...am getting sores from sucking lozenges...LOL

Yes, was going to ask the size of this...bigger? wow...:) but w/all the detail it might be easier larger!

I love the challange of creating new work. I don't think you will have any problem. You are focused and prepared, that is half the battle. Do explain your process. You are using watercolor paper and art spectrum gesso. What is art spectrum gesso? I know what gesso is and I know what watercolor paper is. How do these tools fit into your pastel work? Is it for the rough surface?
I use ersta sanded pastel paper and Rembrandt soft pastels.

Well, it was a "quickie" (30 minutes)but I love this painting of Berthe's

I kept thinking...how dare I try this? How can I possibly get her color?

Then I stopped that and SAW what she did

Then I saw it myself

I want to try a Cassat now

It was great

Pastelist........I think i worded that wrong.....it's art spectrum primer.....a liquid to paint on a surface ready for pastels........it has very fine grains in it ...and just from the first sketch...it is giving great texture! My first at ever using this stuff.....as i have loads of watercolour paper....(cos i did think i liked watercolours.....but then fell in love with pastels!)

DS for how it goes onto the paper so well and for how much i used just for one peice of paper......about A3 size.....i don't think it's too expensive...it says it can be used on any surface .
I'l put the link up so you can check it out it has 11 colours too.......i got the sand one......but i may just branch out to more now i have tried it.

Hi There,
What are the rules? I picked a reference photo from the options shown. Am I able to use a photograph of my sister and her baby? Is it against the rules to use colored pencils for fine details. Just asking. Need more information. Never before have I entered a project. Thanks, Cinderella

Cinderella

In general, outside of project work...........as usual.........customary..........is it considered mixed media to use prismacolor pencils WITH soft pastels? What about oil pastels? What about water coloring with water coloring pencils? Also, is it considered "cheating" in the art world to "trace" an outline from a photo as a start to a completed picture? Need to know. New to art. Thanks so much........want to avoid having to post all these questions to the "right" thread. Can I just leave these questions here? I really appreciate it!!!!!!!! Thanks, Millie

Lol Cinderella........ well I think this is a 'pastel' project..... so as long as some sort of pastel is used there is no problem..... be it pastels... pastel pencils...... or oil pastels..... wouldnt think it matters having something added other .......

as for tracing........ each to their own...... some say yes its cheating...... some say no.. :) ..... do what ever you are comfortable with ....... tracing would cut down the initial time, and leave more time to get right to 'work' :) ...... hope to see what you do soon.....

as for a photo of your sister and her baby........ were they born around 1800's lol ...... this particular project is trying to immitate impressionist painters

hope this has helped

Hello and Thank you!!!
Recently I took a couple photos of my sister and her new baby. I traced the photo outline and went to work. (small) Later on, I sketched freely from the photo enlarging the image greatly. I then traced the new image onto three other papers. I am doing a crash course in art mediums and am using: water colors, soft pastels, oil pastels, and acrylic paints. I am very excited and very new to the pursuit of art!
Personally, I tend to lean towards outlining a photo as cheating for myself. Especially when my goal is to improve and train my eyes. My question on mediums is in part because I want to learn in all these four areas, have so many interests, etc. that I am not sure where to go on this website. So far I've hopped into the Creativity division and Oil Pastel discussions. Perhaps for now I should slow down on-line and leave more time to work at my goals. It is just soooooo addictive to be on this website. I LOVE IT so much. Maybe on the use of pencils with soft pastels I am being too legalistic. I just didn't know if one would say that is a mixed medium catagory. (for learning purposes and using this website) Thanks for your response. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.
PS No, I don't think my sister's photo will qualify ;) Lots to learn. Blessings, Cinderella

Well, it was a "quickie" (30 minutes)but I love this painting of Berthe's

I kept thinking...how dare I try this? How can I possibly get her color?

Then I stopped that and SAW what she did

Then I saw it myself

I want to try a Cassat now

It was great This is so good, I want to quit. I have been trying to do pastels in digital, and it's not easy, you did this in thirty, I should be thrashed, it would take me hours, just to copy it. Your side strokes inspired me to make a new brush today. We can't just pick up a piece of chalk and turn it on it's side, we have to have a brush shaped/made for the purpose. So far I have done my Cassatts, and stuff without, but seeing your painting, I knew, I had to be able to do that. Thank you. Greg.

Hi and Welcome!
In answer to your question, it is a pastel project. It is based on impressionist painters and paintings. As artists we should be open minded, so I don't see why you can't use the subject matter you have. I think you can utilize your picture, but you should paint it in the impressionistic format to be fare to all the artists that have stayed within the set guidelines. It should also be painted in pastels. Thanks for joining my project. Can't wait to see your picture.

Hello,
I may sit this one out for the following reason: I am new to art, not just this wonderful web site. I am still learning perspective, shadowing, positioning, etc. I've never had an art lesson in my entire life. Because of this, I am crash course "training" myself through the library and this web site. I am really excited about it. My first commissioned work came last week (from my sister, doesn't REALLY count) and I ran with her request in four directions, non of which she requested!!! In short, I am using the same photo reference sketched four times (traced the last three) and am experimenting by using the following mediums: pastels, acrylics, water colors, and oil pastels. This way I hope to learn the differences in mediums as I struggle to replicate her picture. I want to see other people's work on this thread. Can I be an onlooker??? I JUST WANT TO LEARN. Perhaps I could participate after this frenzy is over. I just don't REALLY know what I'm doing. And, I'm NOT being modest! THANKS YOU SO MUCH FOR THE WARM WELCOME, FLEXIBILITY, ACCEPTANCE OF SUBJECT MATTER (by the time I'm finished learning the four mediums per one subject, perhaps I can do an impressionistic styled piece. How long is the deadline? If it is open ended, I'd like to try. Cheers, Blessings, Art Heaven Moments, and Energy..............Cinderella

Cinderella, first of all welcome to the ball:D and wc.
You will find there is a forum for all mediums.you can look at work by pastellists watercolorists and oil painting and acrylics etc you will find lots of ref info in these separate forums.
As you are new to art, tracing is ok to start i guess its horses for courses and down to the individual, you can also graph out a drawing so just carry on what you are doing also i would suggest if you have the time is to just draw, pencil and paper and just draw anything, fruit in a bowl, table and chair, just draw the shapes you see and see how they relate to one another, the more you do etc, anyway this thread is open ended so just choose one of the ref pics posted in the thread and go for it,mind you it is pastel orientated not acrylic or watercolour:D
Regards Guilli.

I got interested in this challenge, after viewing Pams version of Morisot's painting. I'm still doing research for my painting, and while I was out, I found this Color wheel, manufactured during the era, and used by some. Of course, I had to shrink it to fit hear, but can send a full size to anyone who wants it. To me, this is exciting stuff, like real science. Like getting into their heads, just a little bit.

I got inspired seeing Pampe's piece. Morisot reminds me of Cassett, and others I've studied. I love what the Impressionists did. It must have been difficult, trying to promote new ideas, that the establishment didn't approve of. I'm kinda in the same place, as I work in digital, but want to paint in conventional ways, to create beautiful natural images, from pixels of light.

I am glad my assumption was correct, that it was your painting.
I think your painting is coming along nicely. I can't wait to see the final result. What through me off, was it was not posted with the usual project posting. Thanks for clearing up my confused state of mind.

There's a reason for that too. I have posted in a couple of those challenge things before, animal, mother and child, and no one ever commented or said a word to me. That's not me, so I came here first, because the thing, was started from here.

I found that as well. There were a few projects that didn't comment on my work or mentioned that I had completed their project. There are other projects that have been very supportive though. If you sign up for a project and don't use that section for posting, the project itself doesn't give you credit for doing it. I believe that is how many of the artists in WC have obtained awards for their beautiful work. It is very frustrating isn't it. We do paint for the challenge, yet we also paint for the recognition.
When an artist goes unnoticed, we face depression. It is truly a vicious circle. I guess it is time to go back to the easel to complete another circle.
:cat:

Thanks for being part of my project!

Thanks for posting to my thread. The painting is quite vivid. I would loosen the sharpness on her chin though, it is kinda rough.
I love the colors you chose. I am really glad you posted. WC has kept me quite busy as well. You gota love it. For the proper credit, you should upload it in the project section. The link makes it easier for others to comment. Great Painting!

Thanks so much for your kind words. I loved this project as well.
I want to thank you and all the other artists that made this project a success. Superb work was posted here.
I tried to start another project entitled Cassatt's Colors, the basis was to delve into her world and have fun with her palette.
Sadly, it was rejected. They thought it would be a better thread in the History section. I am throwing around some ideas and will post another project shortly. Thanks for joining my project.

You could perhaps increase the contrast of darks/lights a little bit to show where the light is coming from.

Or you could just leave it alone! :)
