A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Girl with Pearl Earring
Project Leader: Lulu
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: All mediums
Subject: Portrait
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

This painting by Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer (c1665) has been the subject of much interest, following member BevL's excellent wip, so we thought it would be a good idea to make it into a project.

I have even found an excellent analysis of it by John Hagan (see reference link), at our very own WetCanvas!

Feel free to interpret in your own way, following the original - or not following the original lol - it's up to you.

In one of the reference links you will find a very large image of the painting.

Please describe your thoughts, feelings and any difficulties you encounter as you work on this project. And also please post your progress/final images to this thread.

Most of all, enjoy the journey!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=446)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

As this project has been opened up to all mediums, I am moving the discussion thread to portraiture. sandrafletcher

OK.........I'm sad.

I've been staring at "Girl in a Turban" for a while now, contemplating the meaning. I noticed, she has no eyebrows, and why does she cover her hair? Does she have hair? Why does she look so deeply sad? I think this girl had cancer or another serious illness. I think she is dying. She's embarrassed by her outward appearance, wondering what do people think of her, and she is very afraid. Wondering if she will forever be looked upon this way, and being afraid of that also. She appears ill, pale- skinned and hairless. The turban replaces her beautiful locks she once had.

:crying:

Ok, so now I'll GO work on re-immortalizing her...........along with all of you guys.

LOL...Tina! I think so many stories could be thought of to go with many paintings & I DO wonder IF there is anything said to explain this one? I don't own a Vermeer book so does anyone else know?

pastelist, you may have misunderstood/mistyped...that painting is one done by Ruth...:)

guillot
05-31-2003, 11:29 PM
Well, I am deeply saddened. And you know, turbans are associated with cancer patients even now in the modern world.

Actually, the whole thread is mis-titled I think. The name of the painting is "Girl in a Turban" not "Girl in a Pearl Earring", or has it continuously been referred to as both??????. Vermeer worked in toned backgrounds, and verdaccio's and grisailles. He mostly toned his canvases in the middletone gray, worked his lights and his darks from there.

OH............:crying: I am really sad folks. At least the tears will help me squint, right? Blurr everything up real good.

Tina, on the Vermeer site Matt posted, it was called 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', as well as on other sites I've come across in the past. Maybe it is referred by two names, though?

I see a twinkle in her eyes, I dont see sadness there at all. And as Matt mentioned in the other thread, there is great beauty in her face. I also see a very slight smile playing on her lips. Not smiling, but a sense of amusement. Thats my own thoughts when I look at her.

Cancer patients lose their hair as a side effect of chemo, and in Vermeers' day, there was no chemo, so I dont think she could have been ill.

Maybe if you read the novel, even though it is fictional, it might give you a different and more positive way of looking at her? Just a thought. :)

I have been searching, and I'm finding it by "Maiden with a pearl earring", "Girl in a Turban", and Girl with a Pearl Earring." It is in fact, known by all three.

I know that Chemo wasn't around then, but there are illnesses that cause loss of hair, chemo is not the only thing that causes loss of hair. She has no eyebrows. It's just what I see, my interpretation, but doesn't stop me from painting her ;) And, there are so many reproductions of her! Some lose the interpretation I get from Vermeer's, so I'm studying his not repro's. Some have that twinkle along with a bit of uncertainty and fear, and some just have a beautiful girl with the earring, and some have that emotion on the face that stops you to evoke an emotion. It's just an emotion and thought that I got from "his" painting.

Pastelist, no worries:) Wish I DID paint like Ruth! :)

Tina, I see very fair eyebrows. In fact, if I didn't pencil mine or dye them mine would look non-existant too, they are so fair.

I wonder if the turban was a fashion of the day? One of my books suggests that she might have been Vermeer's daughter.

I now want to read the novel again ..............

Oh.... way cool being able to compare all these gals & people's interpetations!! Myself I will go for that rather than an exact likeness.

If anyone would like to see one of the better reproductions of this painting it is here (http://gallery.euroweb.hu/art/v/vermeer/03b/22pearl1.jpg)

The eyebrows - it's possible that there may have been more information in the eyebrows long ago where now time has made some touches of transparent paint fade to nearly nothing. Though I would think that Vermeer made a conscious decision to underplay the structure of eyebrow hair on such a youthful and innocent face.

Tina, your found meaning is correct - interpretation is all about what we individually bring to a work of art.

It can be mentioned as well that the background originally had a coat of a greenish glaze, probably a mixture of Indigo and lead-yellow. This has vanished over the years.

Thank you Lulu and Wayne for your generous comments on my progress entry.

Even though I ripped the canvas and had put it aside, this project has inspired me to finish it as best as I can. I will go back and make the corrections I need. It was my first and only attempt at portrait painting.

Vermeer has always been one of my favorite painters even though I rarely ( 3 times in last 10 years ) use oils. I have had the privledge of seeing a handful of his works in person. What is so striking is how tiny they are to contain such a mastery of light and detail.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

Could it have been the fashion to remove eyebrows at that time?? I've seen other Dutch paintings where the women have no eyebrows.

I think the artist (Her father?) perhaps called her and she looked over her shoulder at him. Which one of us girls hasn't looked at her dad sweetly like that??

Hello from The Netherlands,

"The Girl With the Pearl Earing" resides here, in The Hague ( Den Haag). It's as beautiful as you can imagine!

Regarding Who the girl might be?:

There has been speculation that she might be Vermeer's daughter Maria, but unfortunately, Maria would have been much older than the girl in the painting at the time the portrait was done. So, most likely she was just a model and not a relation.

Regarding the Headress ( aka turban):

Like Rembrandt ( whose collection of exotic things was enormous, by the way) and many of the master painters of the time, Vermeer was interested in exotic fabrics/items from various lands (Remember that during this period in history, The Netherlands was the giant among sea-going traders.) Items of fine, fancy and interesting textures were bought by the master painters to use as props and costumes. Turkish "delights" were of particular interest and all the rage, such as the tulip bulb ( Turkey is where they are originally from), so much so that people would spend fortunes to own a single tulip bulb. Hince, the beautiful headress in the painting was most likely some sort of fine fabric from Turkey ( this would also explain why it's wrapped like a turban).

Regarding the High Forehead:

During the previous centuries (14th to 16th) wealthy/noble women of France and Northern Europe used to shave their hairlines back to create more forehead, this was considered beautiful and was the fashion of the time. It's possible, judging from other portraits of women from the 1600's, that forehead shaving was still in fashion, however I am not 100% sure that it was still done in the 17th century.

Reagarding the Lack of Eyebrows:

Vermeer himself was said to be a 'fair strawberry blond red-head', so if the portrait was of one of his girls, then it's possible that she had very fine eyebrows. I can tell you personally that I am married to a Dutchman who has little to NO eyebrows. My husband is not a redhead, but from the first day I met him, I've been fascinated with his lack of eyebrows... and he IS healthy.....<smile>

If you want to read more about Vermeer online, go to google. com and check out all the sites about him... there are plenty.

If you're ever in The Netherlands, you can enjoy many of his paintings in The Rijksmuseum ( Amsterdam ) or in Mauritshuis (The Hague) which is where 'the girl' is.

BTW:
Good work all !

Thanks Tina. My goal in joining this group was to step out of my comfort zone. Portraits in oil is about as far out of it as I can get ! And yes, I was getting pretty tired of working so small in the PC project, as enjoyable as it has been. Thanks for the welcome. I hope to do more projects in this forum in the future....in spite of my oil skills. LOL.

Thank you Cath and LuLu for the comments !! I've completed the underpainting. I think this is the fastest I've ever painted. I've enjoyed doing the underpainting. And I've actually remained looser than my usual tendency to "tighten" up. I'm proud of it right now :)

The underpainting is completed (I think ;) )

Maybe its time for me to try a verdaccio. What paint mixture is that? Chromium oxide and black, with differing percentages of lead white?

guillot
06-07-2003, 09:36 PM
hi Dana, Yes:

equal amounts of chromium oxide green and mars black = your #2 value. A little more black = your #1. Then you add amounts of flake white (lead white) to get your values from #2 to nine.

Tina

I just emailed that to a friend. In studying the work before dipping my brush I realized there was just a shadow for eyebrows. Anyone else see that the left eye is off in relation to the right, it's just a bit higher. Again, I didn't notice it in the study, just when I began painting. Tina, your sensitivity is showing; I love your story of how this young girl sat for her portrait. In the book she is a housemaid who the master entices to sit for a portrait [unbeknownst to his wife]. He is dissatisfied w/ the look and remembers his wife's pearl earring. He insists the girl put on his wife's posession [Oh! Horrors, the servant girl wearing her mistresses earring--and just one]. The wife bursts into the studio, sees the master painting the servant girl and IEEEEEEE! her earring.

Sorry peeps, I got carried away.

I paint Expressionistic in watercolor. I've been doing it about one year. I only work in faces right now. I love this portrait and was thrilled to join up. I should not have peeked in before posting my work though, as now I am quite intimidated. All of these works are so wonderful. Truly, I am impressed with what you have done--each of you. I really enjoyed seeing the Finals. Thanks for the Project, Lulu.

There seems to a deal of preoccupation with the eyebrows.....or lack of. Having 'no eyebrows' myself, as did my father, a Dutchman, before me and no doubt many of his predecessors, it strikes me as vaguely ludicrous that some people can't accept the fact that the condition exists and is completely natural.....as well as a high forehead.....for some.

As I wrote in my comments accompanying my own entry for this project, very little is (was) known about Vermeer. He was only mentioned something like three times during his life.....and that was only in passing (like his name got written down, and that's all). He was the "best" pupil of Fabritius who himself had been Rembrandt's. Fabritius was tragically killed when the gunpowder magazine in Delft exploded whilst he was working on a portrait. I believe it was then that Vermeer's name was first mentioned. After Vermeer's death at 43, having left a wife and 11 children, his works were virtually ignored............forgotten, if you like, until some time in the mid nineteenth century.

The girl with the pearl earring was considered as one of his most insignificant 'studies' and was sold for something like 40 cents (US) - in today's currency, that is - some time after his death, eventually being bequeathed to the museum where it now resides. (It was described as "a small bust of a young girl (with an earring)" - I seem to recall reading.

Since "it's discovery" there have been numerous accounts of 'the story behind the painting'......The truth of the matter is that most likely, there isn't one. The picture was elevated to 'stardom' ..... being referred to as "The Mona Lisa of The North" at some point, perhaps when people started really 'looking' at his works.

The "pearl" is believed to be just a bauble - and the attire, just studio props, that had been 'collected' over the years. No story then, eh?

However, there is a "protectiveness" quality to this lovely picture, I feel. Like it was Vermeer's innermost feelings being brought out, if you know what I mean, as to how much he would have liked to have provided for all his family......if only it were possible. The fact that he was extremely poor and died leaving not only a large family but huge debts, may well have had something to do with this 'daydream'.......If indeed that's what it was. The feelings I have expressed here are just mine.

Others may well 'see' something different...........I guess that's fine. It's just that you have to be careful about not allowing the 'fiction' to outweigh the facts..............lest you be left with egg on your face...:D

Mind you, in the case where there are so little facts, mebees you should just let your imagination run riot. ;)

Hi there.
So, I choose to do a grisaille, much like Tina, and because Vermeer most likely started which such. I wonder though, if he blurred out the edges in this stage, or waited for the glazes.
What do you think?

Hi Fookie :) and Andyvry ;) - Agree with ya both. What is art, either in the viewer or the painter without a bit of imagination? It was just my imagination running riot as you put it Andy, LOL

Matt!! Looks great so far, and you have the eyes spot on! I still can't get Her right eye (the left viewing) exactly right. Tinkered with it some last night. I don't know if he blurred edges or not in the underpaintings, though I did in mine. (not all, but the ones that count). Michael said there should be smooth transitions in the values, and I've been trying hard to accomplish that. You have a GREAT start, you've already captured her likeness very well.

Hiya Tina, howyadoin?........:) Remember when turbans were all the rage pre 1920's ?.........Rudolph Valentino wore something like that I seem to reall in one of his films, not to mention Mata Hari (?) and there were all sorts of 'spin offs' in the art deco period, the roaring twenties and all that, yeah?

Whaddyamean, you is not as old as that! Neither am I........

Just saw it in a book once............. :D :p

Matt : this is looking good. Wouldn't know about the 'blurring' of edges or the technique favored by Vermeer. He was criticised (later, I believe) for being a painter fastidiously preoccupied with ensuring no brush marks were visible on any of his paintings..........presumably in pursuit of the 'realism' look. He was also accused (?) of being a painter who used only his hand (fingers) and not his whole arm. Not sure if there's any basis for that assumption, or supposition whatever. (And how can anyone tell?) It is well known (apparently) that he used a camera of sorts......the likes of which van Eyck was reputed to use to lay down the image.

One of the things that struck me about this painting was the delicate balance of hard and soft edges and I suppose that the most difficult aspect that I had to deal with, was holding down the girl's age, which in my comments I put at about thirteen or so. You seem to be doing OK with that aspect, at the moment.

Looking forward to seeing the color going on, anyway, Matt.

Oh, dear. This is what I love about oil painters, the absolute study of everything--brushstrokes, direction of, mood, edge, just everything...real painters, in my mind. Perhaps a bit of pure envy showing since I am immune-challanged [ill] and cannot tolerate chemicals. How I would love to work in oils. I try to keep my mouth shut and just enjoy the commentary, but I can't. Watercolorists need to see shadows to paint, too, and my world is so small--so let me get back to lurking and hanging on your words.

See I told you all, Dutchmen have no eyebrows! Just kidding andvry :) My earlier response to this project is on page 4, I think. I'm married to a Dutchman with "fine" eyebrows, on the other hand, my dentist (who is also Dutch, of course) has the bushiest set of brows ever! :)

Mata Hari ( you spelled it right, andyvry) was also Dutch ( actually born in Friesland). Thankfully we don't wear turbans in Holland anymore.....or wooden shoes either for that matter!( well ok, for the tourists we do, sort of).

You all are doing such wonderful paintings...I don't paint <sigh>

You tell me about it!!!! It sure isn't easy... but at the same time not that difficult. I mean, there are no mysteries involved with the technique, as for example a rembrandt. Try to copy one of his late self portraits!!! Yeah right!

I once heard a teacher say: You can make copies of every artist ever lived, except for Rembrandt; only Rembrandt could paint a Rembrandt.

Well, it can't be too much harder than trying to copy a master form a poorly printed computer print. In fact, it might be easier, but only if I was right there in the gallery with the painting, I think.

Looking at all the entries exhibited together, I felt it was quite noticeable that her apparent 'age' appears to fluctuate quite dramatically. That's not a criticism, just an observation.

I'm not sure if anyone has commented on this aspect of their own painting, but for myself, as I've already said, I found it a challenge to keep her looking young.

Since 'getting the age right' is an ongoing concern with me, I wonder if anybody else had any ideas on the hows and whys of holding back the years, so to speak.

I appreciate there is no one simple answer and apart from the obvious considerations regarding the physical make up of children as opposed to adults, is there something particular that one should pay the utmost attention to during the drawing/painting process, does anyone know?

Other than that, I find it very interesting to see the varying effects brought about through using different mediums. I have enjoyed seeing all the entries thus far.......

DanaT

That's a good question, andy. I'll probably find out when I start this project. For a really young model, I try to keep the skin colors as clean as possible, no more than 2-3 and usually let the red dominate although I may have to lighten it a bit with white. With this girl I noticed also that the transition from light to dark is very subtle and she doesn't have any deep hollows in her face around the eyes nose or mouth as an older person would.

But, as I said, I prolly find out more when I get to painting her.

My question is: How did the oil painters handle the weird size of the original. I mean it was 16x9. That's not a standard canvas size. How did you compensate for a different painting area or did you stretch your own canvas?

I am interested in copying masters, as quite a few artists seem to enjoy doing this. I seriously wonder why? I don't question it - whatever makes you tick - but I want to learn too! :D
So, I joined in....did this in pastel in about 4 hours....I guess......I was good fun, but I feel like I am cheating.....I did not design this painting and there is not much of 'me' in there. So, maybe I can learn from Vermeer.....not sure what I've learned.....I know Vermeer has a brilliant pallette - it is so bright and fresh and delicate.....trying to reach that is a good aim for any painting. Well, anyway, I can ramble on for ever......but do tell me guys.......what did you learn? How did this benefit you? Or was it simply fun?

(I agree the mouth was the hardest LOL)

I am tempted to comment on each and everyone of the paintings posted so far....but there are so many......I love seeing all these....isn't it great to see what different mediums do? Watercolour, oils, pastels....It's great and all of your efforts are REALLY very good!

(PS: I am Dutch and a redhead...so one needs to look for my eyebrows with a torch too....:D)

Soap! Beautifully done! I haven't gotten to mine as yet, but I've copied others...I think the learning depends on where you are artistically since there are no real decisions as to color etc, but perhaps frustration trying to get that likeness which does come with any portrait.

If you make it your own rather than exact copy which I tend to do, I think I enjoy it more and sometimes just learn how another
artist used color, edges, etc

Hi Painters,

I am wondering the same thing that Soap is. What have you all learned from this exercise?
Way back in the dark ages when I was in Art school/acadamey, we were never allowed to copy a Master. We could study them - do something along the same lines/techniques/style/colors, but we had to remain in our own vision (so to speak). NEVER would I even dare to reproduce a Master's work.....my Professor would have nailed me to my drawing board ( then I would have been the next subject for figure drawing...haha).

So tell me, what have you learned? I'm an art teacher now and I normally frown on my students attempting exact replicas of another person's work. Tell me why I sould let them have a go at imitation? I'm curious... enlighten me.

All that said/asked...you all have done some marvelous paintings here.

Cheers from Holland:clap:

I just read the fiction novel 2 weeks ago about this painting.

Women covered their hair in those days as a sign of modesty. as many cultures still do today.

I thnk ladies shaved off their eyebrows then,,,,,, just look at many period paintings..... Queen Elizabeth I or the mona lisa...

I will try to get involved in this project as time allows, but I wouldn't know how to scan the project for submittal.... help would be appreciated here...

well you are right, and you are wrong; the Mona lIsa actually had eyebrows originally... until someone decided to over-clean up the surface.

I for one think that something like that happened to Griet...

Welcome to the project! I think you are certainly correct about the shaving of the eye brows but past discussions had led us to believe and rightly so that some of the dutch have fair skin and hardly any brows...:)

most people use a digital camera to take a picture to submit to the progress & final submissions...but also a scanner, some people have to do it in sections if it's too large...:)

Thanks for the nice comments about my humble effort. I notice that I am in some good company...the other works are fantastic!

Now...I am getting hot under the collar about the eye brow thing:D I was born in Tilburg, (Brabant, Holland) and am typical Fair, freckled, high foreheaded half dutch girl...I never noticed until now that my almost lack of eyebrows is typical. My mother is much darker than me and she has always had to pencil-in eyebrows. So now I know why...maybe I should grow my fringe a bit longer LOL!

Now that we've made all the Dutch really self-conscious about their lack of eyebrows. ;) :D

But the girl is beautiful anyway even without eyebrows and so are all of you!

Talking of ladies shaving off eybrows reminds me of when my son was about 6 or 7. A friend complimented him on his beautiful long eyelashes (inherited from Dad) and said 'all the girls must be envious of those elashes'. Next time I saw him he looked a bit strange because he had cut all his eylashes off.... he said he did not want to look like a silly girl!

about "why she's wearing a turban" ect.

I read a wonderful novel (fiction though) about her. It's called "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and I can't remember the authors name, it's Tracey C (can't think of the last name)

Basicly it says that the girl was his muse, and she's wearing the cloth on her head because she was a maid and did not want to be painted as one, but she also did not want to be painted as a nobel, so she had to cover her hair. It's a great book, and I like to think that it's true.

Also - my art teacher did an extensive study of the painting and it is called "Girl with a Pearl Earring"

I basically used the same colors as I saw in the one analysis site. Blue, Yellow Ochre, a little red and mixtures of this and that. I also like watercolors, pen and ink so have added some light details with black pen and ink.

Thanks for looking! :)

Matt, I spent early this morning reading your thread of the portrait (girl in red sweater) and need to tell you that was a wonderful and BRAVE thread.

I actually think I was holding my breath many times as I read through it.
It is just beautiful and it held the suspense right to the end.

It is one thing to put one's "best" work out for all to see but it was courageous to include ALL the steps (forward and back) and most fascinating to watch your thought process unfolding as you changed course to follow your gut.

Just wonderful!

Hi All

I also read "Girl With A Pearl Earring" by Tracy Chevalier. It is supposed to be a blend of history and fiction and I enjoyed it tremendously. It made good reading and stirred the imagination about what it might have been like in those days. Also talks about how they ground pigments and the camera obscura - very interesting.

Wow, Matt, I am really curious as to your technique here. I never was formally trained in oil painting, just read a lot about it, but I wonder: What is a grisaille? Do you paint in b & w, then paint color over that? How do you achieve glazes? I use WN oils, and use liquin or --I think it's by Gamblin--artist painting medium, for my glazes. They always end up too thin/runny, or they make the painting look unfinished, as the pigment sinks into the holes in the canvas while the medium sits on top. I love your soft treatment of the face.

The underpainting looks great - can you submit a larger one? It's a little too small to tell.

We have some really incredible artist's that live here.

It looks pretty good to me. I think the upper lip may be a tad too thick and the left eye (her right) may be a tiny tiny bit wide. But it's a really good start and I'll be anxious to see the finished product.

I hate critiquing other people's work so I'm glad you agree. I always ask my husband to look at my work - and then I get mad at him!! Of course he always turns out to be right and when I cool down and he's not looking, I make the corrections - Look forward to seeing your next step.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner - my computer was down until Sunday (when my son was here). The painting looks great. I know just what you mean about the color - it never looks the same on the screen as it does in person. Great job!!

Hi Bruno.

You did very well on your version of the famous girl. The only thing I would work on are the edges... if you study the original you can see how all of Vermeer's glazes of the face also reached a tiny little bit onto the background. This will cause a smooth edge look. Maybe you could deepen the shadows of the face a little bit more?
Are you going to varnish this? You should, - as it will bring out the colors even more.
What I did fro the background, to finish it, was to cover it with thin mixture of Indigo and Indian Yellow. This final layer really made the background deep and vivid.

Mine:

Do you see how soft the edges appear?

Bravo.

Matt, thanks you for your comments. I agree with you.
Now I have a problem: I consider this piece one of my better works (maybe the best) and I am afraid to touch it :(
My intention was to varnish the painting after drying; now I'll wait more, maybe my courage comes back

Hi Bruno,

Excellent piece. I think Matt's advice can be depended upon. You can try a light glaze after it is thoroughly dry and if you don't like it you can always wipe it off with a tiny bit of whatever medium you are using (not turp). Just try it on a small spot. It would soften it a little. I wouldn't varnish it for at least six months - write down the date on the back of the painting that you are completely finish. You can spray it lightly with re-touch varnish so it will dry evenly.

I really like the piece - just ordered a book on Vermeer and now I feel like I would like to attempt something of his. I cannot use ANY copies for exhibit, but I still copy the masters now and then - great practice and I love it.

I am totally in awe. Thanks so much for your pm.
I went to see the movie last night and so the 'feeling' this painting evokes is very much uppermost in my mind, and you've done that again with your version.
Again, absolutely fantastic!

Hi, I'm new here, this is a great site to learn, I did a study on “Girl with a Pearl Earring” a long time ago, this is my first and only painting I have done, I wish to continue but don't know exactly how to paint glazes, Can some one guide me on how to ad color and glazes to this monochrome underpainting,

WOW! It's very good, Virtuoso. You need to ask over int he oil painting forum, especially as it is so old. I know there are certain things you need to watch when painting over an older painting.
Good luck!
I think glazes are pretty fool-proof, if you don't like what you have you just wipe it off and try again, especially as you don't have to worry about the lower layers being dry. :wink2:
