Welcome to What's on Your Easel for the month of May 2012!

If needed, please remember to place the butt icon.

Please post your oil paintings that you are currently working on or have just finished.

Everyone is welcome to post in this thread - Newbies and experts, as long as the work is in oil paint!

For the most part, this is a “show and tell” thread, if you would like more detailed help or critiques, the main oil forum would be the place to post and ask

Becca, wonderful light in this painting!

Iam, nice! How many whiskeys did it take to have the bottle look like that?:) I'm curious whether both pictures are from the same painting, or whether you painted the same subject twice?

Currently working on this one. This is still the under-painting, I only gave the sky a second layer (and one star) :) .

Refined expressionism. Love the painterly strokes on the portrait.

Keith,
At least you can remember your last one-night-stand. Cool painting.

it is the same painting, which can be hung on the wall either way. i like to flip them every month or so.

Hi all, nice to see what you are working on:wave:. I just picked up a brush today after six years of no painting. I hung some unfinished painting on my walls around christmas to see if that´d motivate my spirit again - today I couldn't stand two of them anymore and started working on them.

Glad to be back in the WC community.
These are the victims of the day - the left one was made from a picture I no longer have and the right one a play with colors.......http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/01-May-2012/60825-Untitled.jpg

Mmm! Really nice start to the WOYE!

:clap:I've liked this painting ever since you started, Becca! I'm not sure it could stand another tweak, because it's monumentally perfecto!

Keith, I hope you don't mind if my husband has a look at your painting. He's writing a paper about inertia and gravity and the Boson something. I don't understand physics, but your painting is fun!:)

Edith, he's an astronomer, too. This is a lovely start! Is that a star chart she's studying?:)

Ava, if this is the way your creative mind plays, you should do much more of it.;)

I just smoothed out the background and it's still wet, so it looks a little blurry, and that blue glare is really not there under her feet.

The paint is now thick enough that I will need to wait quite a few days before I can go in and finish her fingers and correct some other things I see that doesn't follow Sargent's "Nude Egyptian Girl."

well, this is what's on my easel now. Not even half done, and quite a bit of color correction to do. One of the problems with not being very imaginative is I need photo references for everything. I can only paint what I can see, although I'm stretching myself and gradually getting better!

Heather, I saw your name and immediately wondered if you were any relation to Alan Houser, who was a strong influence in our art school here at the University of Oklahoma.

Your scene is the kind of thing we see a lot of. We have a lot of Indian Nations who govern their own holdings here, and they are a lovely, friendly people.

That looks like a Southwestern arroyo now with the buttes around the desert, and I will be in suspense until you either put sand or water in the basin! Work touched with history is unforgettable!

Nice idea, Iam, that you can hang the painting in both ways:)

Nancy, I haven't followed up very well on last month's paintings. Did you paint an astronomer as well? This astronomer has been studying a book which shows different phases of the moon (hardly visible though). The chart or drawing on the ground will show different circles within circles, which could maybe be planets or something strange he sees, but also energy or his own energy:) Of course he had been dreaming away too far, so that's why he's asleep:)

Nancy,
no - no relation that I know of!

I'm in Indiana and I hardly ever go anywhere, I would love to be able to actually see the southwest areas (or any other area) where Indian Nations govern - they fascinate me. I tell you, though - it's really hard to find reference material for anything historical, unless you just want to copy an old photo outright, which I don't, really - although I bet one could paint some beautiful portraits of Native American chiefs.

In the first weekend every June we host an Indian Festival called "Red Earth" in Oklahoma City. The best representatives of Indians- culture from all over the U.S. and Canada come to show off their art, jewelry, crafts, food, dancing and music. There are several hotels within walking or shuttlebus distance to the hall, and you would be thrilled with the events. I used to go to it every year, but it usually conflicts with the "Prix de West" which is a gathering of cowboy and Indian artists throughout the U.S. at another locale in OKC, and I usually end up there drooling over the art! You could see both! :) If you're not permanently stuck in Indiana, google the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce and they would give you all the info you needed to have a wonderful time with wonderful people!:D

Thanks for your comments, Becca and Nancy! Nancy, I made the picture myself during my holidays in Sri Lanka. I'm using it as a basis for the painting of the astronomer. I was thinking I would like to do something with the chart with the hand on it as well, but that would come in a later painting:)

Heather, this is coming out beautifully! You sounded a bit frustrated about needing photo reference. At the same time, I think this is a strength as well though, since you can do a lot with photos for example by combining them, or making small changes, and the photo reference helps to be able to depict everything realistically:)
K., I love your cowgirl:) In all your paintings, you pay attention to all the small details, and that really shows:clap:
Dominika, wow, beautiful portrait! I think your friend must be so happy when she sees this!

Thanks Becca; I am always influenced by what is outside the door and the danger in this protocol is that sometimes the work takes so long that the seasons have changed. There was a time that I was going to have snow on the ground; but in the end it is an Autumn (Fall) skyscape with a Spring landscape which happily work together. The tree is probably the best tree done to date and probably because I resisted the temptation to overpaint it, instead adhereing to the first buds of spring that were in evidence when I painted it.

I am really enjoying this one. Instead of doing master copies, we got to pick out our own subjects and paint it how we wish. At 43yrs. old, I wish I knew I could create art a long time ago but I guess everyone has to start at the beginning sometime. haha!
Tomorrow is my final critique' I am a little nervous because it isn't done. I have only blocked in the foliage and have more details to add. The paint is wet and I didn't want to mess it up to try to force it done. My prof. did say it was ambitious, so I hope he isn't too hard on me.

I had very little help with this, so any suggestions would be great.

Happy Flower, your choice of subject matter is arresting, and tells all kind of possible stories. The mystery is beautifully rendered! Don't worry about the leaves; at this point, if some of them are a little translucent, it lends some more mystery to this theme!

LaRubia, I'm so glad you've broken the mold and decided to paint landscape and lobster, lovely and fun. You do well in anything you try! (Especially your portraits!!!)

Dominika, that painting is luscious with the gorgeous purple even reflecting in the spoon. It has a soft warmth to it that is very appealing!

Thanks Nancy,

This painting was from a photo I took a couple of summers ago of an abandoned train building. This place has intrigued me since, I have gone back several times to capture the change of the building. I had no idea I would actually ever paint it, or maybe I would have picked a less challenging view point. haha!

I am thinking of either doing more unique window paintings or stick to whole subject of abandoned buildings. Hoping my painting skills will get better. :)

Graham, you seem to have good self control with your color - I love paintings that focus on one color and have only a few other subdued, complementary colors. Did you use a very limited palette? As a beginner, I have to use a limited palette just for the sake of harmony, but my colors still tend to be brighter than I want (I love tonalist works, I just can't produce them!)

Hi Friends, It's been a while since I had time to paint but made the most of a long bank holiday weekend to dust off the equipment.
Here's a view of Langorse lake near Brecon, Wales. When the Grass is dry I'm planning on adding a few sheep grazing on the hillside.

Heart of a Nation, 30 x 30, oil on linen

This Plains Indian is wearing an eagle feather headdress. The shafts of the feathers are wrapped in red Trade Cloth. Bells, ribbon and cloth also adorn the band of the headdress.

His face is painted white with a black hand or coup mark.

Trade Cloth or "Stroud Cloth" was a cheap woolen cloth made from woolen rags and exported to the North American Indians. It was made in the town of Stroud in Glouchestershire County, England. The cloth was dyed red, blue, green, or black, and had a white edge that resulted from the dying process.

I have done this painting named "The Blue Boy" after Thomas Gainsborough (1727 - 1788). He has done a few versions of this, so I have elected to not really copy precisely.

The face has only roughly similar features than the Boy in his painting, and when I stood back looking at it, it seems I ended up painting my son's features into him!

This is a gift to my husband and I am sure he will love this new Blue Boy character

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/08-May-2012/31277-Blue-Boy.gif

The painting is oil on canvas (18 x 24 cm).

Just checking - when signing, should I sign: Magda de Lange after Thomas Gainsborough or should I add the painting name as well: The Blue Boy Magda de Lange after Thomas Gainsborough. Year should be??? 2012 or 1770??

Any other comments / critiques most welcome!

Hi Heather, thanks for the compliment. My palette isn't particularly limited - on it I have 3 yellows, 4 reds, a green and 2 blues, plus white of course - although I probably only use about half of those colours in most paintings.

What I do find helpful in maintaining harmony is to use one base mix - might be of any colour, perhaps sky or background foliage, something like that - and then try to incorporate that into other mixes as I make them up.

Hope that is of some help!

Hi Nora,

I have a question about the top painting of the two - it looks like there are brushstrokes or indentations from a brush going across the colors - from the woman on the left all the way to the right edge of the painting. Does it just look that way from the photo, or... oh, did you paint over another painting?

Elvis - Fantastic, very atmospheric.

K - I really like it, the handprint on the face, never seen anything like that before, is that traditional? Symbolic?

Been working more on Captain Jack, I like the looseness in the hair but really need more detail, itching to work on him more but the paint is still too wet.

You are seeing the gessoed Masonite surface, which I sometimes use to prime my wooden panels. I like to leave the the roughness showing on some of my pieces. Here's today's update on Edith. I was trying to get the grass right to show some atmospheric depth and haven't reached it yet. Also noticed, just as I took the pic, that the sidewalk is bluer than the sky!!! Himself sez I need cracks in it. I need to water the back of the canvas, since it's getting loose.

My major overall concern is that it lacks warmth. I dunno, should I go into the coat with a warmer brown? And advice is very welcome!

It was a scrap piece of hardboard that I decided to try my hand at a panoramic view - something I've always wanted to try. No, it doesn't work like that, sorry. It's much more complex. You pretty much have to fly manually to correct color casts. Photoshop can guess the color balance, but it often turns out way wrong.

Looking really good everyone! :)

This is what I'm working on, its a commissioned work that I'm doing for a low price because someone is buying it for a family who lost their daughter recently. They said they wanted "Orangey sky/clouds - Orange & Yellow flowers in the meadow." so here it is so far:http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/16-May-2012/986612-photo1.JPG

I feel like the sky color is way too different than the land color, does anyone have any ideas as to how I could make this painting look more realistic overall, like perhaps orangey colored highlights on the land or something? lol

The land looks really dark, so I'll definitely have to do some highlights in general, but I'm also having trouble determining where the light is coming from (Which I should have thought of at first xD)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Kory, congrats on the commission..you could do a rim of backlighting along the treeline maybe and a little even on the grassy areas....i know they will love it!

Kory, They will love this beautiful painting.
I like the dark mountains silhouetted from the sun in back.
I know you have your clouds in but I would put some blue sky at the top third maybe you play with some scarlet streaks of transition then put your clouds back.
Some flowers in the foreground getting hit by light that made it over the mountain

Kory, I think if you put the stronger orange at the bottom and faded it into the top of the sky, it wouldn't draw the eye out of the painting. And since orange may be the hottest color in the pic, you will need to reflect some of that orange underneath the clouds and make sure their upper edges don't disappear in the heat of the sky. They would be lit from beneath so would have dark tops.

The dark background is stabilizing, and when you put in some brilliant flowers in the foreground, your composition will hold together beautifully. Just remember to mix a little of the orange into other areas of the composition for color harmony and I think it will be a gorgeous painting!

Hi Kory,

When mixing your 'land' colours, mix in some of the sky colour when mixing your greens to get a more realistic colour. Steer clear of anything which looks too 'acidic' (no viridian, or lemon yellows)

Highlights can be placed with the bright sky tones if you are sparing... As everyone likes to say, 'less is more'

Rather than the cold greys for clouds and mountains, try some subtle purple and mauve variations.

When considering your shadows, ask yourself where is the light coming from? Your piece looks like it's top right, but the colour of sky suggests a low sun, so this is a little confusing. I would stick with light from left to right.

What colour will the light be as it reflects from the cloud? (unlikely to be white), naples yellow may be a nice option.

That's the great thing about using oils, you can always go over the top, rub back, use more transparent layers etc.

I am sure that your client will be thrilled with the finished piece :)

Just my 2cents

Cheers

Mimmo Ceccarelli --Fantastic painting!
Scott C. Hamilton--I like the cloud reflection; nice crisp clean colors.
larubia--Adorable painting, love the bird and flower.

I am inspired by one of Aivazovsky's paintings; I purposely did not use the ultra blue (prussian blue is my favorite) he used and just using his work to be inspired from, definately not intending to be an exact copy... I like my skies wild. 14x18 on board. Excuse the glare, cell phone pic. Will work on the water later.

Scott, this is a really nice landscape - your color is gorgeous, and makes me want to visit Alaska (in August...)!

AnnMarie, it is exceptional the way you finish your portraits in such an arresting way. I love your bird, and the little blue flower has taken on solidity. I think I fell in love with the little girl immediately - she is perfect!

Floating Dove, I had never seen this artist's work before; you've inspired me to look him up. Very nice start on your seascape!

John, that really looks wonderful! This one is a winner:clap:. How big is it?

Here's today's update on Edith. I was trying to get the grass right to show some atmospheric depth and haven't reached it yet. Also noticed, just as I took the pic, that the sidewalk is bluer than the sky!!! Himself sez I need cracks in it. I need to water the back of the canvas, since it's getting loose.

My major overall concern is that it lacks warmth. I dunno, should I go into the coat with a warmer brown? And advice is very welcome!

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/12-May-2012/203830-Edith_has_left_the_building_4.jpg

I think you are doing a wonderful job on this piece. Granted, the sidewalk might be too blue...should be a little grayer w/lines. But overall I love it. It shows Edith's personality and her warmth.

It's been a while since I've posted anything. Like we all do from time to time, I've been going through a dry spell.

Here's an update on one that I had on the easel in February. I took Marcia's advice and toned down the white vase with a transparent glaze of raw umber & a little of this & a little of that. I've also photographed the painting against a white backdrop, so the white balance is a bit better & doesn't bleach things out.

Sorry to be a thread hog, but since I have the chance to upload my most current project, I might as well go for it...

This is a commission piece... 20x20 on canvas... (though I have a 24x24 stretched linen on hand if I decide to use this one as a study)

It is challenging, because the clients want only the nautilus shell in the painting, and they want the nautilus to take up most of the canvas. I'm fudging by putting the reflection in... but feel like I have to do something to add interest to the composition.

There is still a lot of work to do on this one, but I am definitely open to ideas and suggestions.

There, I did a bit more, added the clouds & darkened certain parts... I still need to go back in when its dry and finish up the trees, the paint didn't want to stick to wet paint.

The yellow part isn't actually that yellow in real life, and you can make out very small clouds in the distance, the camera messed with it a bit.

Any suggestions would still be appreciated at this point :) 1 more session once this dries.

LaRubia, your portraits are dynamite, and did I tell you that I love, love, LOVE this one?!

Z, that silver pot introduces a whole world to us that is reflected. Good work! And your commission is a perfect example of nature's Fibonacci numbers (the golden mean) within a square combination. The nautilus is a classic for illustrating the golden mean with its varied sizes of sections!

Kory, I would make the very bottom of the sky, on either side of that pale distant mountain, a little more intense orange but keep it small. And bring out a few more of the orange flowers in the foreground. It may still be a little too dark at the top of the sky, unless you want to show stars, too! You've made this into a very vibrant and striking painting - congratulations!
