View Full Version : Barry John Raybould Cape Town Virtual Art Academy Workshop Locations

04-30-2012, 02:11 PM
I am excited to be coming out to Cape Town in November of this year to meet my Virtual Art Academy students and to give a series of plein air painting workshops.

This thread is for all the students who have signed up to my Cape Town workshop that will run from Sunday, November 11th - Thursday, 15, 2012.

The purpose of the thread is for students to discuss and agree between themselves the best painting locations for each of the five days of the workshop. Each day will be a different location. The first day should be near the Newlands area.

The announcement for the workshop is on the South Africa painting workshop blog (http://paintingafricaworkshop.blogspot.it/2012/04/welcome-to-my-2012-south-africa.html).

Hey guys I think Kirstenbosch would be a great place to kick off - the Goldfields Hall and tearoom at the top where Art Portfolio regularly has art exhibitions. Please lets get a conversation going about where people would like to do Plein Air in the CT area. I suggest Southern Peninsula, Hout Bay and Kirstenbosch.

re: Barry John Raybould workshop Capetown. Yes, I signed up for the November 11-15th workshop today. Welcome alexan! Almost all the places on the Cape Town and Clarens workshops have now been booked, so you got in just in time! We will be putting together a tentative list of the painting locations over the next month or so hopefully. Some of the more experienced painters are scouting out plein air painting locations for us to all meet and paint, and also trying to come up with a contingency plan in case we cannot paint outside.
Warm regards,

One of my students told me about this art supplies shop in Cape Town in case you are looking for somewhere in South Africa to buy art materials. Apparently they import materials from various European suppliers.

Just a quick note to everyone. The Cape Town and Clarens workshops are both now full. There are already several people on the waiting list for Cape Town (in case of any cancellations) so the best option would be to try to get on the Knysna workshop where there are still a few places left.

Regarding painting locations, the first two days of the Cape Town workshop are going to be held in Kalk Bay. A local artist has kindly offered her studio space for us all to meet. It looks like a beautiful place!

Did you find a hotel or B & B where we can stay yet?

Here is my painting of an informal settlement in South Africa, painted during my workshop in Clarens this week. In this painting I was interested in capturing the beautiful grays of the landscape with the occasional accent of saturated color from the buildings and the hat of a man who was fixing his fence. The dirt path provided an interesting abstract foreground shape and formed a natural lead in to the composition.
