How can you get on-camera flash to render soft light instead of hard, contrasty light?
Any ideas? Tell us what you have tried.

I use a Lumiquest Pocket Bouncer on my Nikon SB20 Speedlight. It softens the flash effects acceptably for on-camera flash. This is an example - my much photographed grandaughter, Mary Margaret - taken Christmas Day, 2000.

You can tell that flash was used. It gives nice catchlights, but the shadows are not harsh and there are no bad hot spots.
