Hi there. I followed the mountain lion w.i.p. thread and painted my first dog. It was a great thread and I gained the confidence from it to have a go myself.
This is A4 size on mi-tentes paper with pastel pencil and some soft pastel for highlights.
Our pastel society is putting together a calendar for the S.P.C.A. and this handsome chap was the subject I chose.
Many thanks for looking and if you have any help to offer with this I would be grateful.

Hi Monica, I believe the Mountain Lion thread Carol is talking about is one I started in the Colored Pencil forum. Carol had commented on mine so I think that's the one she is speaking of, If so,,,, here's the link: Mountain Lion (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=106387)

I'm not quite finished with it yet.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement. Different pastellists will be submitting their work for selection for the calendar. It would be a real buzz to have it chosen, that's for sure. Inga, I will try to remember about you wanting one - there are cats, dogs and even a mouse amongst the photos worked from.
Monica, I'm sure you will be blessed as I was with Gemma's w.i.p. thread.
Thank you very much Gemma for your work - you certainly helped me BIG time.
Leslie - do you know what kind of dog this is? -Mastiff? I can't remember.
I figure I can't go and save all the animals and bring them home, but I can at least do something by painting one for the calendar.
Isn't it interesting how you can become quite attached to the subject you are painting.
Regards,
Carol

Thanks, Gemma. I'm sure you're tired of hearing this by now (:D ) but the mountain lion is wonderful. I can see how others could be inspired by it. It almost -- almost -- made me want to dig out my colored pencils and pastel pencils and try again (all previous attempts just looked like coloring book art. :( )

Carol you make me envious with work like this. The last time I tried pastel it turned out more abstract than realistic! I had more smudge marks than a school blackboard!

Nice work!

Paul - I make you envious??? cor blimey - I've checked out your work on your website a few days ago and again tonight and your work is amazing. I love the chimp with the attitude.
I also used a white charcoal pencil which sharpens to a fine point and can be blended as well. I consider it a pastel. Couldn't believe you could get white 'charcoal' though ...very strange.
Arcanjo and Sher - thanks for checking the fella out. I would love suggestions for a name for him for when I make cards.
Ryde2rope - wow, thanks for saying that about the ref pic. My desire is to reach 'photo realism' and each time I get one step closer. Tim, my hubby, can't understand that - he prefers the impressionism work. Realism - now that's a steep mountain to climb and I wanna get there one day. Especially when you see so many folk's work around this site.
Thanks everyone for being sooo nice.
Cheers,
Carol

Carol,
How about Winston for a name?

Hi Line & Jean. Thanks for looking! & great to meet you. I think I've got a bit of a bug now with animal paintings and am on a high after getting this one right. I am looking forward to the next one.....after my pastel soldier is finished...
Sher, Winston sounds like a good name - would it matter that one of the young guys in our youth group would share it?
Cheers,
Carol

Thanks folks for having a look-see. What encouraging comments.
The calendar idea has been post-poned as it would cost $NZ10,000 (!!!) to print. The S.P.C.A. has kept photos of our work though for future use.
I was so happy with 'Magnum' that I am going to use pastel pencil on some more dog pics. I tried to get a special ref. pic of Fred my Tibetan Terrier, but he was so scared of my camera that he trembled wickedly!
Cheers,
Carol
