Well, I started this last night. I got carried away on the head and didn't stop to take photos. I will for the horse on the bottom.

This has approximately 4 hours into it.

9"X12", Grey Fabriano paper.

Comments/critiques welcome as always.

Nice brown dapples on his neck! Great so far! Can't wait to see it finished, as usual! How on earth do you actually get time to work on things in the evening!?! By the time I get supper, kid in the bath and to bed, and study a bit, I'm ready for bed!

Thanks guys!

Suzy, it's rough with housetraining a pup but as soon as she is asleep, I work on my art. She sleeps right by me so it's easy to keep tabs on her.

Here are the ref. photos.

Thanks guys!

Rachel, I get mine from magazines. I just use these for practice, I don't sell them, they are just to help me get better with CP's. I will hang them on my walls after I get them matted and framed.

Here is an update. I finished the bigger horse and am now working on the smaller. I will have this finished tonight.

It is fun to work on smaller ones and take a break from doing bigger ones. And they are so much faster!

Your highlights are wonderful. I have to try your technique of laying down a single color and then going over it with details. It definitely seems to work!

That is turning out great!
I was hoping they were your own photos. They you could have entered the Harness Tracks of America auction.
LMK if you like doing this one I'll quickly scan a couple of free references to do one for HTA.

Twyla, that is great of you to offer, and I REALLY appreciate it, but unfortunately I have no printer :( . I really appreciate the offer though.

CJ and Sheila, you should try it! You can get beautiful and awesome results! Of course, your works are already beautiful!

Well, I didn't get this done last night :( but I will have it done today. I am not sure if I want to finish the Paints right now...I might do some more little ones first.

Thanks guys!

Actually, I used to do all of my highlights last, even on top of darker colors. One day, I was just messing around and came up with this technique. I've used it ever since.

Well, I finally finished it. Let me know what you all think.

Only thing that seems a little off to me is the bottom horse's body. It seems disproportionate to his head. Other than that, it's gorgeous! (I still can't believe you finished it in 2 days! Dah, I hate you!! :p)

Stephanie,

I only have one one crit - the head seems to be a bit shorter and fatter than the ref photo. OH, but what a gorgeous horse! And what an awesome running pose!

Otherwise your drawing, as always, is exceptional. You really have a way with those CPs.

Don't you feel weird drawing a solid coloured horse?:p

Margaret.

Stephanie,

Exceptional as usual!!   (even if it is a practice piece.)

As for Twyla's generous offer....can you copy to a CD and take it to your local print place (Staples, Office Depot, Sure Copy if you have them) and get them to print a copy off the CD. I'm not 100% sure they do that, but you could call first. Just a thought.

Thanks guys!

I agree about the head. Looking at it now, I can see where it is off. I can't really do anything with it now though. My luck if I would go back to try and fix it, I would totally mess it up.

I never thought of that Lorna. I'll have to check around. Thanks!

i do agree with this, i think the running horses' back is a bit short...??
but other than that, i think this is awesome!!! (BTW, I was reading the 3 paints running thread, and i cannot believe you want to chuck it! i would NEVER have noticed, not in a million years!!! PLEASE don't ditch it!! it's one of my favorites you've done-ever!!!!)

Thanks for all of the wonderful comments!

Christina, LOL! I had no choice but to do brown eyes this time. They turned out ok though.

Debbie, I am a detail nut. I don't know why, exactly, but my horses don't turn out the same without alot of detail. I won't go smaller than 8.5"X11".

Well, this guy is pretty regal. His stud fee is $10,000.00. He had great color and nice eyes, I just couldn't resist!

I have decided not to scrap the Paints. You were all right, I worked to long and hard. Usually when I start a project, I finish it.
