View Full Version : Sam I AM WIP update

05-19-2003, 01:08 PM
I worked a little bit on this last night for the first time in about 7 weeks. I took it to the hospital when DH was in for his surgery thinking I could work on it. Yeah right....I had to keep the room like a cave for him. Curling up on the windowsill with the shades just cracked wasn't really panning out.

It's getting there.....

05-19-2003, 02:00 PM
Oh my gosh-this loks amazing! your attention to detail just blows my mind!!!!!!!!!

05-21-2003, 01:00 AM
that is absolutly beautiful so far... is it ink? paint?

05-21-2003, 08:22 AM
Thanks everyone!!! I love how this one is turning out!

Bendaini, It's graphite on Bristol paper....12 x 18". I'm using pencils from 9H to 2B on it. You know what.....we spell our first names the same!! Crissy....I've never seen anyone in person spell it like that. (Although only my parents and my childhood friends still call me that)

05-21-2003, 11:48 AM
lol, I changed it from "Christy" cause it was so boring :) I've been spelling it like that since I was about 14... nice to meet another one :D

09-10-2003, 06:13 PM
WOW! Long time no post!! I lurk a lot when I'm taking a break from work

Anyway, I have been working on Sam a little more frequently as of the past month or so. So, he's got part of a mouth now! All the better to eat you with. ;)

I figured I would just dust off the old thread and stick it in here instead of making a new one.

**d'oh! see below for the photo...hopefully**

09-10-2003, 06:23 PM
trying again...it may look grainy, I had to re-size it.

09-10-2003, 08:16 PM
Wow great start! Can't wait to see it complete~very nice:)

I love working in graphite and I love Rotties. Incredible breed.

Your drawing is great. Looking forward to watching it develop!

I think this is stunning - cant wait to see the installments - I assumed it was some water soluble medium as it looks like it has been washed on in places

09-11-2003, 09:06 AM
Lookin' gooood so far. Funny thing, when I first got on the thread and the pic was appearing from the top down, I saw that drark spot beside the ear and the eye and thought it was a matched set of eyes and thought to myself, this is wierd looking.
Then I saw the whole thing and reconsidered! LOL

09-11-2003, 06:09 PM
hey! welcome back! sam's coming along nicely...can't wait to see him finished!

09-12-2003, 03:21 PM
Nice 2 c u back RottyMom!!! Even nicer 2 c u working on your wonderful SAM!! :D

09-13-2003, 03:56 PM
Hey thanks everyone!! I'm going to try to work on Sam again tomorrow in the morning. Hopefully, I can get something substantial done and I'll have something to share. It stinks....this month is a crazy one for me and I wish I had more time to commit to drawing but oh well, I would rather have business booming than more time than I know what to do with. :p

12-28-2003, 05:42 PM
Okay....now that the commission is done and gone. Back to Sam the man. My goal is to have him done by the end of January. I'm figuring out if I make a deadline or I have a deadline made for me, I'll finish something. If I don't....I'll goof off until the cows come home.

I have some photos of this on the desktop but the progress is small and really nothing earth shattering. I found that if I place the photo into black and white and then blow it up to 8 X 10 on the printer I can work faster. I was getting bogged down and borderline obsessive with the detail in the colored photo I was working with. I think deep down I was getting frustrated with the detail and burned out. I found with the commission reference I printed off of the computer, it had enough detail that I can get my style, but I don't obsess over it. So, I have been moving faster since I have adopted a new way to approach the reference photo.

Anyway.... this was from 12/4:

This is from today after the photo issue was figured out. I have been working on it more at night because I am prioritizing and took this week off and drawing more. So, I made some headway big time (at least for me and my snail's pace)

01-06-2004, 10:25 AM
Here's my progress on New Year's Eve. I took this photo right after I finished.

Your Rotti looks great so far. I like the typical look and fine details on the fur. Looking forward to the next stages. :)

01-10-2004, 02:33 PM
This is beautiful - even if, at the moment, it looks like you are headed for the world's sloppiest kiss.

I am especially enjoying your "snail's pace" as it really demonstrates your technique and is so helpful for ham-fisted folks like me.

Thanks so much for sharing.

Sam is gorgeous! I`ve never tried graphite, can you get it in grades like pencils? Are they sticks or pencils?

Fort Meyer
01-19-2004, 12:06 PM
Oh my yes, Rotties do have teeth! I miss my Brutus so bad. I guess I'll just have to look for a good photo of him and create a drawing instead. Your's is beautiful. (Both dog and portrait!)

01-19-2004, 12:56 PM
I have been hanging out on the drawing/sketching board and NEVER even notice d that there was an animal board. Very nice job! Take this with a grain of salt but I think I would like this picture if you left it the way that it is. I am partial to pictures that look like a work in progress--the line merging into the realistic image. Nice work.

01-19-2004, 03:57 PM
Thanks all again!!!

Oh yes....rotties do have teeth! LOL I was reminded this afternoon when we were training. Sam completed a recall, he finished into the heel position, I went to reward him with a goodie and my hand got in the way and collided with his big canines. I thought he was going to swallow my clicker!! I had my gloves on but man are his teeth hard...I thought I punched something concrete. :o

Jay, your idea is cool....but me being a compulsive anal artist (not that my style doesn't scream that LOL) it would freak me out to have an unfinished drawing! I did something like what you're talking about with a white draft horse and some dalmatians. I let their bodies sort of fade into the paper and you sort of had to figure out where they ended and the background began.

Angie, what I am using are graphite drawing pencils....they look just like regular pencils. They come in a ton of graduations in hardness. With Sam, I'm using 8H (pretty dang hard) to an 2B (relatively soft)

01-20-2004, 12:45 AM
Awww, his tongue shrunk!! :D

Coming along nicely!

01-28-2004, 04:53 PM
GAH....I've been too busy with my real job last week. But I have been working on this a little the past couple of nights. I don't think I am going to make my deadline of Feb. 1 to finish but I will be close.

01-28-2004, 06:39 PM
Fabulous

02-18-2004, 03:35 PM
Whoops....I keep forgetting to post updates in here! Sorry guys!

I finally finished the collar which I was completely dreading. I hate drawing metal....fur is so much more forgiving. All I really have to do is finish his chin and his mile long tongue! LOL

Fort Meyer
02-18-2004, 03:42 PM
Your drawing is wonderful, and your "metal" is beautiful. You still make me miss my old Rottie so much ... will keep tuned in to see that "mile long -- one slurp and the food is gone -- tongue!"

02-18-2004, 06:52 PM
Excellent job on that collar!! It's totally believable.....

02-27-2004, 11:27 AM
