Started a Lion the other night. Thought I'd post a progress shot coz it seems to be taking forever. Must thank Crias (Cathy Sheeter) for the ref pic from the WC Library . . thanks matey!!
Posted the full pic and a very close, close-up of the eye (surprised myself with the photography there . . .couldn't believe I could get this close!! LOL) . . . still lots of work to do around the eye.

That eye is so good it would make a great painting by itself.
Crumby ... I love the nose! :) What size are you working? This is beautiful ... the texures are already coming alive.
He is regal - going to be a great one, Crumby! Echoing EJ - what size and also, what paper?
Wow another developing masterpiece to watch being done *S* Love it Can't wait to see how you do this *S*
Looks like it is going to be another Wonderful Crumby.
Hope to see some progress pics of this.

Wow!!! That close up of the eye just knocks my socks off.
Another outstanding piece coming our way - many thanks for sharing it. love it already!!!

Thanks everyone for looking and the kind comments. Really appreciate it!!
This is quite a large painting . .about the size of a full Canson or Stonehenge sheet but it's done on a kind of Mattborad type material. (well appaprently Mattboard is made up of two of these sheets plus a bit . . so it's just less than half the thickness and weight of Mattboard). Don't know why I'm tellin' you all of this coz I hate it!! LOL . . any slight rubbing and it tears the surface and starts balling up on me . . but I'm so far through this pic that I'm not turning back. Last time I'll use this stuff though . .back to Stonehenge for me!! :)
05-18-2003, 08:29 PM
Crumby - sounds like a frustrating surface to work on. Don't blame you for going back to Stonehenge. All that said - it's magnificent work.
I have to say I'm suffering with a bandaid on my finger where I've worn away the skin blending into Wallis paper. At least you dont' have to worry about that with this stuff.
Does it have any "tooth" at all?
05-19-2003, 07:04 AM
This is amazing....that eye is mind boggling! And he didn't even blink when you got that close to him? :D
This is gorgeous, Crumby! Bad paper or not! I love the background colour, is that pastel or the paper colour? I would like a room that colour!
So glad to see another Crumby masterpeice!
Will be watching for updates. :)

Ah Crumby, I still haven't gotten over the gorgeous chimp you did! This is going to be just as fantastic and I'm waiting with bated breath.
I'm sorry to hear life has been difficult for you recently. May you find solace in your friends and your art.
05-20-2003, 12:49 AM
Crumby, this is going to be another astonishing masterwork regardless of the problems with the surface. I just went and looked at your chimp, too, which again humbles me! You are one of my idols!
05-20-2003, 12:54 AM
I love what you are doing with this ... you capturing the personality of this beast ... wonderful job! Can't wait to see it finished.
05-20-2003, 02:03 AM
Crumby , your lion is absolutely wonderful. what a drag to have to fight the paper!! Still keeping you in mind.
05-20-2003, 02:25 PM
Well done...just the inspiration I needed to get me arse back into the pastels again!!
05-23-2003, 06:14 PM
Great stuff CB. Love the eye details.. can almost see your reflection there... ;)
Watching from the sidelines cheering.
Hi Sir Crumb...how come no update...pull your finger out..'bout time you posted some more. ;)
05-23-2003, 07:26 PM
Oh yes, this is going to be just stunning! (as usual)
05-25-2003, 10:17 AM
Thanks for looking and the encouragement!
Sorry for the delayed reply . . I've been slack lately
Barb: Hope the finger's better . .yes it does have a fine tooth . .similar to Stonhenge . . but it just tears away at only a moderate level of working. ack!!
Bev: . . No it's not the paper colour, it's pastel . .er . . Windsor & Newton Olive Green tint 5 You can see below I've added more. mmmm . . .take a lot of sticks to do a whole room . .but if you pay for the air-fares? . . .
Louisiton: . .Thanks for the thoughts . .one day at a time
1mpete: . .idol??? . . ROFLMAO!! . . he he
Artholic: yep again. thanks for the thoughts
Redsy: . . . er . . I use my finger to blend . .but hey, whatever turns you on!! LOL
OK . .here's a slow progress update. Most of the bottom half of the painting is just blocking in at this stage. Also the side of the lion's face. I'm unhappy with the back of the mane so it requires a fair bit of re-work. Starting to take shape.
05-25-2003, 11:12 AM
Starting to take shape.
I'll say it is, he's looking so regal, great work Sir!
05-25-2003, 08:10 PM
I'm really enjoying watching this piece come to life. Its lots of fun to see one of my photos worked by a master of the medium!! Superb!! awesome!! what more can I say??
He's a handsome brut! Too bad you're not liking the paper, maybe you can do over on something that will hold up better. Or are you done with a subject once you're done?
06-01-2003, 11:01 AM
doe, . . . can't go back now . . .too much time invested here! lol . .ah well.
OK sorry this is taking so long but I really haven't had too much time to do anything lately. Still a long way to go . . the lions body is really only blocked in . . .I've still got work to do around his nose and now that I see the pic on the screen I can see more work to do on the mane. mmmmmm will this ever end??
06-01-2003, 11:22 AM
Exquisite.....sitting here with my jaw on the floor as usual:D
This is absolutely gorgeous! Don't appologize too much for taking your time when you're doing such a lovely job.
(That being said, I can hardly wait to see more.)
I loved this reference photo when I saw it too. Don't think I'd be able to do it this much justice though!
06-01-2003, 12:53 PM
Crumby - truly a magnificent piece of art!!! You are expressing yourself at every step and it shows. Patience is rewarded.
06-01-2003, 03:18 PM
Lordy, he's a magnificent beast! I sure cannot see where you are having difficulty with the paper, this looks like sheer perfection. I sure envy the way you portray fur...like every hair is accounted for...more, more, more...please?
06-01-2003, 04:10 PM
Leep on keeping on!! You are doing a beautiful job.
06-02-2003, 01:31 PM

Thanks for all the encouraging comments . .they really help
OK . . . I'm so close to done it doesn't matter so I'll just post the final now.
My main critic is asleep so I'll leave this up on the easel for a few days and stare at it before I get it photographed and framed.
There will be a few minor adjustements here and there (back of mane for a start) but I don't think you'll notice.
I left the body and legs with slightly less detail than the face which is the main focal area.
Thanks again for the support

Now . . . .what to do with this blank easel . . . AARRRGGHHH!!!!!
Actually, I've been promising myself that I'd do more planning with my next painting . . so I'm making sure I do that . . . gonna take my time and work more on compostion and the like. I always seem to stumble there.
