A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Marvin's Portrait
Project Leader: fun2cook
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Portrait
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Marvin Chew is a talented artist. Many of us in the watercolor channel here on WC! are fans of his work. In general, he's just a great guy and we love him. He set out to portray many of the contributors on this site in some really terrific character sketches. (See link below). To return the favor (and have a little fun) we decided to create a project where we could all produce portraits or character sketches of Marvin as a little thank you. This is that project. Have fun.

The first Reference link is to Marvin's Reference images. There are more reference photos of Marvin there (as well as a lot of great reference photos from Singapore) The second reference link will take you to the thread where Marvin did his sketches of us. The third reference link takes you to the thread where we decided to make the thread into this project.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=431)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Just seen this Fooks, it's lovely. You got the likeness, and the colours are nice and soft as always. Would perhaps add a touch of blue to bg, it is very close in redness to his skin tone.

Thank you for commenting on my MCHEW. My works always show more red because I have to compensate for high values, but I take your good advice and slap a bit on blue on the background. Thank you. This is fun project, right?

This is my first ever portrait and I'm pretty happy with it. It is painted on 10"x14" 140 lb. Canson rough paper with artist grade paints. I traced the key features because I did want it to look a little like Marvin, LOL. That wouldn't have been the case if I tried to draw it free hand.

Hope you enjoy it, Marvin. ;)

I'm not sure why you can't upload (directly?) from your scanner. I know I have to save the image as a jpg and then use the uploader. That's all I know. There is a forum for new users or you could contact Scott (the site's owner) he can explain the ins-and-outs maybe? (Glad you enjoyed the project).

Thank you all for your nice words about my Marvin painting, Scott, Bethany, Marvin, Fookie, Lyn, and Mary-Ann. I was happy with it for a first time portrait. :p

Marvin, I think I was a little generous with the size of your mouth--just think of it as "smiling broadly." ;)

For the background, I painted a watery wash of the green, sprinkled it with Kosher salt, and waited to see what happened. Lo and behold, I must have gotten the timing right for once and the salt reacted as you see. After it dried, I brushed it off and ran another wash of the green over it to blend it a little more. I hoped it would suggest leaves behind Marvin's head because he is the master of the tree.

Will have to comment on new paintings tomorrow when I am more used to the sling I am now wearing on my right arm. Tell you about it in the Wash.

I am finished. Thanks to you all that helped me pick
my background. The actual painting is larger
but I could not
fit on scanner. The actual size is 10 x 14. Not much more to
see but more shirt, and background.
As usual I am not totally satisfied with this.
The painting actually has more reds in skin tones
but again I could not get correct colors from scanning and adjustments.
I hope Marvin likes it. :-)

you did your hair on yours. Hair is always
difficult for me.

Thanks! As it is the first watercolor hair I have done, I'm really quite pleased with it, too. BTW, I only used three colors in this painting--FUB, Burnt Sienna, and Permanent Rose.

It's not a watercolour portrait like most of the others in the project, but i'm just not up for that yet.:)
I like the comic book look of this style, and have been playing with it on and off for a while. It's fun to be a little careless with the lines and let the colours slip out of the outlines. It's like being little and having a colouring book. I never really tried to stay in the lines.... well... maybe i *tried* to stay in the lines, just didn't succeed. :D
Funny, this is the one time the tiny image doesn't look better than the large image. It's almost always better small. Changing an illustrator document into a jpg loses a lot of crispness too. If you have any interest in the original .eps file, Marvin, I can email it to you in a shake. Thanks for the lessons on painting foliage.

Glad you like it. Would I use the word"generated"? - no, but it is digital art.
I use a program called Adobe Illustrator. It is a vector based drawing program (as opposed to Photoshop that uses pixels for its instructions)
It has a lot of parallels to watercolours, which might be why i prefer using it to draw than photoshop as many other digital artists use. Check out the Digital Art forum - there's some way cool stuff in there!
