I love your reference photo of the polar bear in the zoo. I think I need some black ink to finish this. Do you think it is finished as is? What do you suggest?

(Gold ink, watercolor washes and stippling ... which amounts to charging because sections were very wet-in-wet).

It looks as though he is perched on a ledge looking out at the wonderful artic sea. You could use a little more black, or a darker wash on the rocks in the background, and a shadow under him to show the light source, but I would go very light at first, and then glaze as you go along until it looks right for you. The darker wash will really make him pop out. You did a great job on his body, and the surrounding area. I can't wait to see the finished piece :)

The desert landscape was drawn plein aire on one of my day trips, and then was made into a intaglio print. Sorry, there is no photo. Part of the pic I let my imagination run with once I began on the plate for the prints.

No fair! You are way too fast, and are showing the rest of us up! There's one teacher's pet in every class. . . :D

Just kidding, of course. I love this piece just the way it is. It does look like he's looking over a body of water, but I like that. It's more natural, I would think. Love the rocks too.

DragonLady -- I wanted to do the desert scene too! I kept clicking it and wondered why it wouldn't come up. :)

ciao, rapolina. Give it a go Rapolina..... I am sure you will like the effect. Just use the ink washes as you would the watercolours. Even if you are using coloured inks the most important factor is tonal value. Black ink has the same tonal variations as all colours do and you can make some fantastic creations. The dots are just dots of colour to emphasise detail and shadow....the darker you want...the more dots you need.
You have mastered the watercolour.... you will have no problem at all with the ink:D

Your moderator :o forgot to put in the project details that colored inks are a great way to make your line and stipple pop out. Either the wash is grays with colored line and stipple, or vise versa. I think with the contrast you will be able to see clearly where your strengths are, and where you need more practice. That always helps me.

I purposely uploaded the reference photos in grayscale so that everyone could use their imagination :D

Are we limited to only ink in this project? I'm using ink and watercolor. I only have one thingy of ink (gold) my Chinese ink is long dried up, think I still have the container ... maybe if I just add water ..... lol.

Jakeally and fun2cook and other project participants.

Several have brought up the subject of colored inks or watercolors. Having inherited my colored ink collection from a print shop I used to work for I did not have to buy them. Since most probably have watercolors, or can afford even a student grade set of pan or tubes it is alright to use them.

Now that is all the concessions I am handing out on this one, so get those brushes, pens, inks, colored inks and watercolors out. I want to see some work :)

Remember to be kind in your critiques, but be honest. This is a stretching and learning project, and I have faith in all of you ;)

I really like this rapolina. The fact that u have some lovely earthy colours, that clearly describe the terrain and plateau perfectly... the bear is perfect, pure, direct and stylised... the eye is drawn to it's whiteness and nice lil details in opposition to the muddy compex earth all around..... this has a great mood to it for such a simple setting ;)

Yep, I see it as done too :) I love the feel of this piece. It is a shame that we have to put these beautiful animals in controlled enviornments, but if it protects the spieces then it is worth it. He was so beautiful, and I sat and watched him for some time. I think you captured his feelings/dreams of wanting to be home again.

My Project entry.
Rendered on Canson 140lb cold press watercolor paper. Size is about 7" x 3". All done with brush, using an India Ink wash. Still need to do the stipple part, but not sure where to do it on the painting. The background was done by cutting a small piece of a kitchen sponge dipping it in various mixes of ink diluted with water and dabbed on the paper. I drew out the tree and elephant and then used a liquid mask to cover them so they wouldn't get any ink on them from the sponge I used. Any and all comments WELCOME!! :D:)

Looking really good Dave:D I see you put the tire in there too. They were using it like a toothbrush....lol I sat and watched them for a long time. I wish we had a safari park here in Idaho, but I suppose since we have so much wild life we don't need one. 2/3rds of the land in the state is BLM land, but you can go on it anytime you want to. We have more federal wild lands than any other in the lower 48.

Thanks guys for your encouragement...its had the right effect, I have done the wash today and posted it in WIP.

BTW sassy what is BLM land ( I am hopeless at these abbreviations only just worked out LOL!....LOL:D)...regret there is not much 'big' game in UK but many smaller animals flourish. In my area there has been a lot of work to protect the 'red kite' and over about ten years this has been a great success. You can now guarantee to see several on a country walk. They are a beautiful sight:)

Dave BLM stands for Bureau of Land Management. A lot of it here is used for grazing cattle. The cattle keep the grasses down so that when range fire season comes about they won't be as bad as they could be. There are a lot of Basque sheep herders here too.

but i'm a pig-headed...;) i love painting abstracts, but i noticed that being able to draw helps a lot. and drawing is also funny!

Thank you sassy for the chance to try an elephant. I was uptight about how dark to make the wash with the watercolor and left it very light, I thought. Do you think darker shades on the main elephant would have been better?

rapolina, I read your comments on your own piece. We need to site down and have a chat. Never Never call your work ugly. You have a good style going, and that as Martha Stewart would say:evil:  ,"... is a good thing":D Now moving on....

The only thing you need to do is to let go of that fear of dark colors. Leave your elephant as it is then go into that background and increase your values. Use dark dark brown or olive, follow what you have down and enhance it. You will see a big difference in the overall feel of the piece. Then look at the elephant for awhile, checking the reference photo frequently. Study the negative and positive space on the animal. Look how far from the tail a wrinkle starts, check the direction of the shadow or wrinkle. The scribble techniqe in the trees is great. Push it a step farther. In other words don't be afraid to experiment, and show us those experiements each time. We learn from each other. We develope our own style, sense of color and texture. You are definitely growing in your work. That is what we all strive for.

Your loose washes and line work are very good. The stippling on the front elephants chest is especially effective. I always enjoy loose, almost abstract work as much as I do realism. This is a strong piecee :)

thank you very much for your chat Sassybird!
i'll treasure your words. i'll try to darken my elephant, even if i love pastel colors (as you can see in my watercolors), but it doesn't mean i haven't to put shadows and contrasts. I admit i finished it quite in a hurry, as it was un-washed since a long time. i'll work again on it and again.

thanks again also to others that encourage me, i'm here to learn and actually learning! :) :) :)

Good for you, rapolina! Listen to the words of encouragement, and put those doubts of yours aside. I love pastel colors also, but to make them pop out a stronger value is needed. Keep experimenting:D

Mary Ann,

I pull color copies from my printer and experiement on them before I finish a lot of my work. You can mix with a different medium like gel pens, colored pencil, or pastels. I believe darker shades would give you piece depth and contrast in values, but try working on copies the way a lot of us do during the process of completing some works.

Sassy, thank you for the input on my watercolor elephant. Only problem is I don't have a printer on the boat. So I have to download everything I do get it scanned or printed. It takes a lot of time since my car is an outboard and dinghy to the nearest dinghy dock then a bus ride into town, etc. I wish I could be better at the computer but I am low on enery because we use 12 volt power and my toshiba is terrible on watt usage. Oh well after all the above excuses thank you again and I will try what you said. What I think I will do is get a few prints made of my elephant and then color it in and see what works.

This is coming along GREAT rapolina!! Love the background in this!! Your elephant does need a bit of shading though. Water down some black ink and brush it on the elephant to show some shading. This will give the elephant some depth. Test the watered down black ink on a scrap piece of paper to make sure it's the right tone ( light, mid tone etc). Be sure to use the reference pic to see where the dark areas are :D:) You are definitely improving!! :D:)

Hi all - I really like the work people have been submitting here ... some great effects and results.
Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the project as I am a little overcommitted in EVERYTHING right now.
Cheers and have fun

You are much to hard on yourself, rapolina. With each picture of this elephant you have taken it a step farther, and the improvements add to the overall piece. I love your background BTW:D I am glad to see you stuck with this old boy. A lot of people give up after not getting what they want the first time around. Good for you for keeping at it:clap:

Thank you Art Dude, Rapolina, Sassybird and all the others for your comments on my elephants. I had fund doing them. If I get the chance I would like to try the bear but I just climbed the mizzen mast because the windgenerator base separated and I had to tie off the blades, which was not an easy thing to do since the wind just went on and on
