Hi All

I saw this photo from the RIL and just had to paint it. Reference photo is by Lexiashea.

I have painted the sky and not sure if it needs anything more and I have the tree almost done. The reference photo shows the foreground as almost black as the sun has gone down. I want to add colour to the fore ground but not too much as I would like the tree and the sky to remain the focal point.

Any suggestions on foreground and critiques on what I have done so far would be welcome as usual

Don't you DARE touch that sky. It is lovely.

Now you have the cool reds and blues in the sky - you need to work on a complementary foreground. I would suggest a cool violet and a cool yellow set off against one another. So - a violet tending to blue set off against a yellow heading to blue on the color wheel.

I would do it wet-in-wet - but that is just me........

:)

Gail you are right to want to add some color to the foreground. Photos taken under these light conditions are always a problem. Automatic cameras and as well as well intentioned photo lab people make the shadows come out way to dark. The result is that the shadows look like black holes when in fact if you were looking at the scene and comparing it to your photo you would think that you were not in the same place.

Th solution is to fill in the shadow area with colors and structure that you as an artist understand should be there.

Thank you Rich and Joel. When I looked at the photo again the sky has so much more light than the painting.

good suggestions Joel. Thank you.

Wow Gail... That sky is powerfully beautiful... As a newbie, I would have tried to emulate the photo... Great lessons from the guys!!! I'm really interested in watching how you finish your foreground...

Al : I was looking at the tree and thinking it is too dead center as well . I will be able to crop it a bit to the left or right and maybe add a few long branches more to one side or the Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Char: I tried once to do a sunset over a lake and tried to copy the photo and everything just turned to mud. Lesson learned.LOL

Nitsa: I should have posted this as I was painting the sky to be a true WIP. Better late then never. LOL

Now I shall work on the foreground which to me is as tough as a floral background. LOL I think I will try Joel's suggestions.

Hi All:

I have worked the foreground in with mostly violet, titanium yellow and a bit of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna. I cropped it so the tree is further to the left and added another long branch on the left of the tree. I think I overdid it with the branches. I have placed a temporary matting over it to look to show the crop

6" x 8 " arches 140 cold press. matted to 5 x 7

The blue in the sky is more ultramarine than shows in the scan

Suggestions, comments and critiques welcome.

Wow. Really nice.

See how the use of the complete color wheel makes this such a balanced and lovely piece?

Thank you Joel for your suggestions on the foreground. I am very happy with the way it turned out.

Not too sure about the big tree. Maybe too many branches???
