i am new here in wet canvas.

My usualy media is oils, colored pencils and sometimes ink.
After reading a book of Harley Brown i've decided to test the pastel option.

After a little research i've decided to try the rembrants portrait set so i went to all the art stores in my country and none had the portrait set, they had only landscape sets of 60/90 and smaller sets of general.

After visiting, calling, searching almost all art stores is Israel. i decided to call the talens, rembrants importer and spoke with the manager of the company.

He said there wasn't any demand so far for special sets and that he never really look on which set he imports and that he doesn't have any portrait sets right now ... maybe in a month or two.

Giving that option up i've decided to find help in the US as i have good friends living in Rockville Mariland ... and this is where i need your help.

I need to find where is the best place to purchaise rembrandt pastel sets around mariland (or in an american online store which delivers to Mariland) ... my quick search resulted in some very expensive prices (for example, here we have only landscape sets but they cost 60 set - 65$ and 90 set - 85$ ... i've found prices as high as 150-180$ per set ...

so - where is the cheapest and best place to buy pastel sets in the US ?

Thanks alot in advance,
The Wanderer :)

Yes, Dick Blick is a good company. If you want to save a few more dollars on the Rembrandts try cheapjoes.com,
phone 18282620793. They have the entire set of pasts for about $305, the cheapest price that I've seen. 60 portrait set is $87; the 90 set $154.99. The people at cheapjoe's are really nice; if they can't help you, they'll probably make suggestions on who can! It seems much cheaper to buy online.

If you have access to EBAY......there are always pastels sets on auction....I got my Rembrandt's there for 1/3 of the retail price at any of the art supply outlets....

Good luck....I would think there would be many art stores in the Was DC/ Maryland area

I also recommend ebay - I just bought a 90 landscape set of rembrandts fer 65 dollars. Besides, it's been great fun spending the last month addicted to the ebay pastel category.. I must have placed 100 bids.. I'm just lucky i didn't win all those auctions :P

I recommend that you buy on the web or that you order by telephone, and that you only buy from a supplier who can tell you what is in stock and when it will ship. You can check the latest prices on the web and then order by telephone.

The "cheapest" source and the "best" source may not the same thing. There are several catalogs that advertise something at an unbelievable price, but they don't really carry it. They try to switch you a larger set or a different brand when you place your order.

Dick Blick will ship to Israel, and I am sure all of the others will too.

I was in Israel last month. I noticed a small art store on Allenby Street near the Malecon that carried Rembrandt Pastels.
