a go at a different style...

head scarf -
acrylic and gold leaf
14" x 18" box framed canvas.
May 2001

I'm not all that happy with her bum, but really can't work out what it is that makes me unhappy with the area, I might crop it just below her waist... any ideas, comments or suggestions?

different stroke/color approach here it seems. I like. I think the bum is bottom heavy in the composition...rendered a bit on the round/orb side. Interesting in a surreal way but(t)it draws my eye down and leaves me there. I'd sooner like to see the bum loose a bit off the sides and rendered less round and more sat upon than to see it cropped completely. Nice feel to this one over all, though.

super on the shoulders and arms (after I commented, I spent some more time). Where are the gold leaf bits?

Thanks Z!

The whole body is gold leaf with very thin layers of paint over it, it is the gold that gives her the bronze/brown look rather than paint. In some places I've scuffed up the gold leaf with sand paper to give it more texture.

you, dear lady, are fast becoming one of my favourites. i quite like this piece. i can only think of two things that may be bothering you about the rear end: one might be the transition from the hips or it might be the circle drawn in the left haunch. otherwise, i can't see what might be bothering you. i'd stare at this for a long time (and just because of HOW it is painted!). http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

is gold leaf made with gold?

*nodding* but the not so good quality gold leaf has other 'stuff' in it to make it go further.

I really like this!
I must say that it really made me giggle (not sure if that was your intention) when it first loaded, it was so 'cheeky'. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I think the bum may be bothering you because, as no legs are suggested, she must be sitting. And if she's sitting, the bottom of her bum should be 'squashed'. But it doesn't matter. I like it! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

it looks a bit swollen, not belonging to the fine and delicate back, a bit exaggerated imho.

Thankyou all for your comments and suggestions, I've had some serious interest in this one, and the potential buyer would like me to leave it as is.

If he doesn't buy it then I think I'll shorten her butt by about 2 inches and add some fabric between the bottom of the canvas and the butt, with a hint of toes peeping out, as if she is kneeling.

Good luck with the sale. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

BTW on my second visit I saw that the colour scheme in middle of the bent arm reaching for her head would make an interesting background for this or a similar piece.

I Dont Think Its As Much The Size Of Her Buttocks As It Is The Circle On The Left. Makes It Look Indented To Me. Please Dont Crop It.Just Hilight The Circle More And Make It Less Of A Circle. Think Youll Be Surprised.
