Good morning, I won't say happy April Fool's day because surely Palm Sunday trumps that, so I will say Halleluia everyone. :)
Becca keeps telling me that Sid misses me, so I thought I'd better come and give my greetings. :D I had a difficult couple of weeks, and I have been recouperating trying to get back to normal after that. Nothing is normal, though, so please forgive me as I will continute not to keep up.
Oddly enough, with the discussion at the end of last month, we are about a third of the way through Game of Thrones on DVD. Definitely well done...though I wish it would skimp a little more on the, uh, graphic details, though this is HBO so what do you expect. Lots of on-target casting and good mood.

Hi Marcia! How cold? We are humid and warm here...
mtpalms

It's 47º, and the wind makes it feel colder, unlike yesterday which was a warm wind out of the south. 15 to 25 mph, and it feels like it's already blowing 25. Windy tomorrow, then nice again Tuesday, of course bf is leaving again Tues morning. I wouldn't blame him if he left today. :(
Since I can boot from the old drive, I think I will ignore computer probs and get
some painting done.

Oh it's just that he hates the wind as much as I do (even indoors, just hearing it howl can drive one nuts), but it is so hard to work outside and mix mulch compost and dirt, and then spread it when it is like this, even though it's a small area. I would leave if I could.
Carey, sounds like you are enjoying G of T, in spite of the graphic violence. Occasionally it may be justified, but usually it is way overused. Sad that by and large, audiences are so conditioned to violence, that the storyline becomes secondary. Luckily this show has a storyline in place to follow. :crossfingers:
Happy Palm Sunday! Carey!

:wave:Hi, Carey, I'm so glad you're back! Your hallelujah reminds me of a song that used to get stuck in my head. It was like a monk chant and the whole song was so easy to remember! The only word in it, repeated over and over, was just Alleluia over and over again, but with the melody making the song. I loved it because it's easier for me to remember melody than words. Unless the words are like beautiful poetry and mean something... Happy Palm Sunday!
By the way, we missed someone like you getting a cat on the front page of the Oily!

Good morning Becca ... everyone .....
Yesterday I went to a small museum in a town called Allentown ( yes that Allentown, in the song by Billy Joel ) anyway they had a show going on called "Who shot rock & roll" which everyone and their brother seemed to be there to see.... but within their American art collection, I saw from across the room a paining and I knew at once it was him.... They had a nude study of a young girl by John Singer Sargent. I took a picture of it with my phone and I'll post it later. This was the third Sargent that I've found in these small museums out here where I live.

Hi, Paul, how great is that!? I just happen to be making a pencil study of that painting, Nude Egyptian Girl, I think it's called. It's a very hard pose to capture, since Sargent made the darkest shadows in the figure as dark as the background. The posture is hard to capture, too.:o
I think because it's so much of a challenge for me, I will have to do several studies before I paint it.:)
One year I went to Boston to see the biggest collection of Sargents that had ever been assembled in one place, and I think I ended up with Stendhal Syndrome! He is wonderful!:D

04-02-2012, 01:07 PM
This painting was a study and not one that I've seen online or in any books. His work is so unique that on a wall in the mist of other paintings, from across the room I knew it was a Sargent.
Nancy, Will you be posing a WIP on the Nude Egyptian Girl?
NancyMP
04-02-2012, 01:52 PM
Paul, I'm hosting a Sargent Challenge in the Portraiture forum during April and May, and the Nude Egyptian Girl is the only nude figure I included. The turns of light and shadow in her flesh forms are good for learning facial forms as well, and she is a very youthful and appealing figure to include. I will be doing a WIP on it within the format of the Challenge, and everyone in Wet Canvas is invited to participate and post their work as well.

hazefry, only thing I can recommend is just find something and paint it.
NancyMP
04-02-2012, 07:28 PM
Hazegry, try books. I studied books on color, anatomy, and composition. Then I did exercises recommended in the books. My university classes were, except for drawing from life, limited to the abstract trend popular at the time, so in pre-video days, I needed to learn from books. I think it's easier to absorb books because you're not just seeing the artistic prowess of the person in the vid, but you can actually study it as you make mistakes.
There's no real shortcut to having fun with painting; learning how comes first!

This may sound like amateur hour, but I highly recommend the old Walter Foster books. When I was learning to paint, they were invaluable because they take you through a painting step by step, recommend what pigments and how to blend them, what brushes, and it is easy to see how to apply these steps to your own work. The artists Foster hired were top notch for their time too.
Some friends of mine bought a lot of Anton Gutknecht's paintings in the 70s, and they are very nice.

Sandra, I'm feeling pretty bad, too. My back hurts so much that I can't lift my painting arm; the pain is pretty much in my right scapula. At first I thought it was because I hadn't been taking the Arthritis Pain tablets and took two earlier. Didn't touch the pain, so I took a hydrocodone as well (I seldom take those because they can be so addictive). Now I'm mostly just sitting in a chair reading with the bed buddy perched on it ... and it still hurts!
I was going to paint tonight and now I can't. Even if I could use my left hand, the pain is spreading to my left shoulder too.

Nancy, if your shoulder blade pain persists, it could be a sign of a heart condition. Granted, I am a worry wart, but I have heard that it is a warning sign. http://www.emaxhealth.com/45/155.html
"If you are experiencing pain between the shoulder blades, combined with any of these symptoms, call your Doctor or 911 immediately! Your life may be in danger.

Hello, everyone, I have had an adventurous day.
I hope I didn't just burn the nuts I was toasting.
I planted four bougainvillea along the posts of my front deck. I still have seeds to plant and two rose bushes, which I still don't know where to put those.
And there was a woodpecker in my sunroom today and I am pretty sure Pook broke her wing. :( :( I am very very sad about this. :( She was so beautiful, all I could think to do was put her outside and hope for the best one way or another. I bet she is the one with the nest in my attic and I hope she didn't have any young. I'm surprised Pook managed to get to her, but I guess he has been practicing on lizards. It makes me mad because it's not like he had plans to actually eat her or anything.
Anyway....I hope the dogs don't dig up my plants...Tekila has a vendetta against all dirt.

Marcia, my back pain hasn't changed or spread, and I have nothing wrong except for those muscles. Thanks for being concerned about me! Every time I get indigestion, run out of breath, whatever, I end up with a cardiologist checking me out, and they find my heart is doing fine no matter what tests they do. So I'm pretty much covered.
As for that feeling of doom, I must be a pretty happy camper, because I haven't had that for about 20 years or so! I'm going to go out with my umbrella and get a pedicure now, and maybe come home with a chicken apple pecan salad from Wendy's ... since I finally got my dishes washed in spite of the back pain, I want to let it stay clean for a while!
Later...:grouphug:

I haven't had the sense of doom for quite awhile either (knock wood). And, I am painting!:smug:
Carey, I bought a couple 'varmint proof' plants at the local nursery the other day, and Deb said that even still, I should put chicken wire around everything because the cottontails and jack rabbits are particularly ravenous this year; probably because of unseasonably warm temps and it's been unusually dry, even for desert critters.
Now you have me concerned about the loose dogs in the neighborhood, digging stuff up. :( I haven't seen any lately, but I see fresh paw prints in the ayem, too big for coyotes.
I am sorry to hear about the woodpecker's wing, hopefully it wasn't broken after all. My 'big' cat, Mia, likes to pretend she's out hunting, but instead of pouncing on prey, I think she expects it to leap into her mouth. Jury's still out on the little hellraiser, but she does like to catch and eat bugs. I'll have to keep an eye on her.

Aww, Sid, that is so sad. :( :( Such *bests* they are!
Marcia, interesting about the rabbits. We have some living in the brush along our driveway--not concerned about them getting by the house and eating anything I care about. So far they have survived the dogs, which I'm glad for. I like seeing their little fluffy tails hopping along when we come home late.
I'd really like to know why my dogs dig--Tekila goes at it, yipping away as if she is trying to catch something that just bit her. They are so high energy that I know they get bored, even with all the running around they do--but that doesn't explain the neurosis. The only plants they've dug up have been where they get tied...but Tekila was mighty interested in that fresh earth...
Speaking of apple pecan salads...I had one the other day, I was mad that they forgot the dressing, though they did give me a free frosty because they didn't have kids meal toys, even after I told them I was glad they didn't have the toys.

Carey, I love bougainvillea, I have two of them...my fav is my apricot colored one. I don't know what it is about dogs and dirt...
So sorry about the woodpecker ( and Sid, the little bunny.:() my cats are horrid about that stuff too...that is when I don't want to hug them and put a bow on them at all.:(

Carey, Sid must have eaten it all the dressing; they were out of dressing when I went, too. I brought the salad home and used my regular vinaigrette -- not nearly as good! I think Wendy's should put that pomegranate dressing in bottles and sell it in the markets!:D
Here's a recipe (http://easteuropeanfood.about.com/od/salads/r/pomvinaigrette.htm) I found for making it at home, and I think I will make it for when they run short!
I found I had started another trend today when I went to the nail salon; I had to wait for two other people to get through with MY purple polish before it got to me!
Cats... mine aren't outdoor cats, but they're pretty good at keeping the house insect-free. Glory thinks she chose the wrong house to come to now that I wont let her outside either. Last summer she got out and brought back the worst flea infestation (for all the cats) you can imagine!
When my niece was a toddler, my brother was really chewing out the cat for getting a bird outside, and telling her "Bad cat! Drop it, right now!" Alyson must have heard it, cause a few days later he heard a ruckus in the kitchen. The cat had caught a mouse, and Alyson was in there swatting the cat's head and telling her to "drop it, bad cat!!":cat:

Becca, I think one of my bougainvillea is the same color as yours. The other I bought was purple, like the one I had in Germany (I'd been looking for that color last year and could not find it, so this time I had to pounce when they had a few). I also planted two pink ones I have had for a year.
I definitely need to go get some chicken wire. *sigh* At least they weren't yet harmed when I heard the neurotic dog. She will have to spend the night tied up!
Naughty, naughty pets today...

Carey, just finally commenting about your rosebushes...they are so wonderful too...and you would think the online nurseries would get that sometimes your schedule is busy in spring. They never notify me of shipping, just one day...walla...there is a package of roses that need immediate attention. At least here, they are still the best source for a good selection.
NancyMP
04-04-2012, 12:05 AM
Um, what does "walla" mean, Becca?
I have to admit I'm a little envious of some of the houses I see here, with both roses and irises in full bloom already. I don't even see any buds on my roses yet. Maybe I will tomorrow after this good all-day rain soak today.
I miss my old house, where I had Irises, Callas, Roses and Gladiolus. I was happy not to have trees in my yard there, too. Not that I hate trees; they're great, but everything in my present yard is subservient to trees.
When Mother was here, she had a huge garden out back with the flowers closest to the house, and the vegetables just beyond. Around the whole thing, she had lovely wild violets and spearmint, and the mint was great for tea. I still have her border of monkey grass around the rose bed in front. Come to think of it, I haven't seen those grasses blossom yet, either!
The only thing Himself and I can't seem to come to terms on is that he does not want to cut any trees back, and when I hire it done, he just scowls at my tree man like it's all his fault. Lord help me if I suggest we take any of this forest completely out!
I'm feeling a little blue about that, so don't mind my whining... part of it's my fault because I no longer have the strength to do much outdoor work. Or indoor for that matter.
As Sandra:heart: would put it, I'm whinging here!

You can Whinge all you want Dear Nance  .. join the club I hold the record atm dont I.:o .. and really I need to stop feeling down and realize my art and all my Life and everything about me is special .... I guess I have been losing sight of my happy self and well the negitive thoughts do tend to rise in me and I seem to get worse at school knowing I want to push myself to my outer limits but its not intentional it is what it is , I am what I am , that cant be changed but I am going to put my smilyface back on and well at least try to smile :) :D :D ;)
Smile though your heart is aching. Smile even though it's breaking. When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by. If you smile:heart: :)
Nance just hire them in to clean the yard , Himself will get over it ... spending time with you and being together is far more important I think ... Love Ya

Nancy, where have you disappeared to?
Hey guys and gals, I was doing deliveries for work these past 2 days and got some amazing reference pictures of clouds, and streams, etc...
Its always nice to just pull over once in a while when you see something you want to paint.
I began oil painting at the beginning of January 2012 and I must admit, I am obsessed! :) I am just loving it, and now everytime I'm out in nature I really admire it more and sit there just enthralled by the beauty and detail of it, I'm sure my wife thinks I'm a little bit crazy when I get so excited about the puffy clouds and brilliant mountains that I start ooh ahh'ing & making weird noises... LOL!
Anyhow, I just wanted to say hi, I hadn't really checked this thread before.
I'm having trouble uploading an avatar picture, for some reason it keeps saying "unable to save avatar" even though I have it within the size & pixel parameters. I'll check around and see if there is a help forum for that.
This is an awesome site, and I'm really enjoying it! You are all doing amazing work!

I have a surfeit of painting time the next couple of days.
We are getting a huge break on our rent at the gallery for June/July - $100, but the manager needs it by hanging day on Sunday. What a draining month this has been, and it's only the 5th. I was also $100 short on the money I had set aside for my property taxes. At least all of this coming up early in the month means I just have to punch a new hole in my belt, and not panic because the means simply isn't there. /end rant.

An a happy easter to you too! I'll be in church half of the weekend. Then I have to go over to my Dad's to help him... legend has it that he bought a *huge* Black Forest ham and invited everybody... *sigh* guess I know who's gonna be peeling an entre sack of potatos :wink2:
But OTOH you should *see* the wildlife and nature at his place... Grand Island, in the middle of the Niagara River (NY) I'm just a couple miles... His back yard property is shared with a state park, no hunting allowed... so he has deer, hawks and owls, woodchucks, geese, wild turkeys, the occasional fox... all on any given day. So I'm going to grab my cam and take some pics for sure! And of course the river itself. Nope you can't swim across it tho even in perfect health its too wide and dangerous.

Hi chicas and chicos in the other side of the bond and Big Islands! I have a luxury Easter Monday: I have Internet! :)) Getting ready for tomorrows classes in a quite cold weather, but it will get warmer from now on. Had a bad flu during the weekend and couldn't much go out, now better for the classes. I went to Venice a week ago, saw the canals and the thousands of bridges that seemed to be everywhere and always a new bridge ahead that you end up dizzy with bridges! Venice is beautiful, worth to visit but I find it complicated to paint plein air there. Had some time to paint in Toscana in Volterra and in Montalcino. it was great, but probably need to touch them some at home still because I was driving by car and couldn't stay that long at one spot. Tuscany has so much to paint that anywhere I look there's a view. Love it here! Tuscany is a plein air paradise, thinks me. Chiao tutti, until the next (when i have Internet again:)) ).

Nancy, called a little while ago...she hopes to be back online soon.:D
Thinking about oil painting makes me have a great day at work :) Just on lunchbreak now admiring Albert Bierstadt's work, as well as all of yours!
I work at a metal shop, and have a CNC plasma cutter, a guy today gave me a great idea.
He bought a steel cutout of an eagle from me, then a lady oil painted all the detail on such as feathers, etc...
I might have to try something like that. I'll keep ya posted.

This could use some refining...considering I have no medium or solvent or a few of my normal paint colors...and it has been hastily painted...and I had no light....for now..:o
