View Full Version : "Grazing Miss Daisy" (Equine, Colored Pencil)

About 9x12". Colored pencil on Windberg ebony sanded pastel paper.

Too cutesy? http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Oh, the "orange" isn't that orange. I could not for the life of me edit to tone that down.

This is GREAT! I really like the colours and the expression of the horse. I also like the way you did the grasses. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

This is my favorite so far.
I must say, a friend gave me a short critique of a recent work that just said: "do you have any idea of how you have improved since your started this a year or 2 ago?" I think the great thing about the forums is watching a style develop.
I always liked the equine stuff you did but it was pictures of horses. This is so mature and such a picture, whether a horse or a teacup or a truck, it is a beautiful piece.
Definately my favorite and hope you see in your work what my friend wanted to show me in mine!

Thanks, everyone!

I thought the daisy thing was kinda cutesy, which is why I asked.

Unfortunately this is one of those things where the scan came out better than the actual painting and I see I need to beef up the colors a tad. One draw-back to using black pastel paper.

TeAnne:
I haven't forgotten Ruby. I've had to put her aside for a while because I just can't seem to "get it". The pregnancy is making me HORRIBLEY emotional and that piece was driving me nuts to the point where tears were getting involved.

Son of a . . . I was JUST thinking the same thing about YOUR work, Deb! I remember when you first started posting here and you seemed so unsure of yourself. Now look at you!

Thanks a bunch, Deb. Dunno if I can do this again cause I'm not sure what it is I've captured. I know it's there, but I can't *see* it. Rather frustrating, but typically me. I'll come to me, probably a month from now, I'll get a big *CLICK* between the ears and everything will fall into place.

Until then, I'll turn out regular stuff over and over until I get that "click".

Thanks again http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Great Roan! Not cutsey, just cute 'cause foals are cute. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif Wonderfully done, great colors, and I love the title. The only thing bothering me, and it might just be the scan, is the line behind the eye is a little bold. You don't have a bad price on it at all.

Good luck on your auctions! Both are beautiful works of art, so if they don't go, you can blame it on the cheapskate bidders! They are definitely worth at least what you are asking.
Though who am I to talk, I've never bought a piece of original art. My house is full of my own stuff, no room for anyone elses. We artists are each other's worst customers!

Yah, the scan made it much more "vibrant" and darker. The eye area isn't quite so dark or prominent. I had to work the colors up to bring it up to the scan level :P

Thanks for the kudos on the eBay pricing -- it's what I can get for stuff around here and frankly if I can't sell it for about the same there's really no point to using eBay http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

heh, sure, but there's no bids that I know of. If anyone bids on it and the other one I have up, it probably won't happen until a day or so before the auction closes. Here are the links to both the pieces I have up on eBay at the moment:

hi roan...

i usually am lurking in the critique forums, never really commenting as i don't post here anymore, so i feel i should refrain.

however! i have to agree with dj on this. i have seen your work over the last year or so (is virtual time relative...how LONG have we all been here??), and the improvement is amazing!

this truely speaks for itself. you have matured so far into this style that it has a life of its own. and not an easy thing to accomplish. animal portraits can be too crafty and cutesy (to use your own discription), where as i look at this and see a work of art.

you are mastering this genre!

good for you!

I'm bringing this back up to the top for two reasons:

1) to thank those who posted last:

Lori: I've seen the progress as well, but to hear it from someone else -- especially that it is more "art" than "crafty and cutesy" really means a lot. That is what I am ultimately striving for and I thank you very much.

Sandi: you too, girl http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Leesmith: yes, a lot of my stuff is posted in Animals & Wildlife, but pretty well all of it is posted in Critiques as well. Might be hard to search for, though, since I post a lot in here http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/frown.gif

Hey, since I know what I did, I'll get the links for you and stick them on the end of this post for you. Take a look if you want http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

2) to let everyone know that "Grazing Miss Daisy" sold on eBay on the last day of auction. I'm rather shocked that it did, but it did.

So, I'm off to do some more colored pencil horsies soon as I get those links for leesmith http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif
