What is the legal/ethical status of basing work on another person's work? (For example, painting from a photo taken by someone else). Even without a copyright, intellectual property is protected. Must such things be labeled, "study of a photo taken by J. Anderson" or some such? Thanks in advance for input and info.

There are many, many threads on this subject.
Welcome, by the way!
Click on the SEARCH button at the top of this page, and then type in the word Copyright OR ethics and you'll get more info than you ever wanted!
Our Reference library here has thousands of photos to paint from, for sale if you wish, and a thank you to the photographer is always nice. See the library under the heading "Community."
Hope to see some posts from you soon!
