Beautiful painting! You've improved the reference photo by adding more lights and darks.
Is there any light in the horse's eye in your reference photo. I don't see it there or in your painting.

Peggy, this is coming along beautifully...

Thanks Kansas Lady
There is lightness around the lower part of eye, have to darken the far side quite a bit and change the eye line a little (see suggestions from Paul in animal forum) should look better after I do cosmetic surgery on it Saturday.

Peggy - this is going to be a striking portrait when finished (do you call a painting of a horse's face a portrait?). What are you using for your blacks? Will check back to see this one grow...

So far I am using Cobalt Blue and Burnt Umber for the darkest, need more washes though.
Thanks for the remarks

Great title, so appropriate. Wonderful reference photo and you are doing a great job painting it. Will be interesting to watch the darks develop even farther.

How about you?

This is so beautifully painted. I swear that horse is breathing. The colors are rich and deep and luxurious. I love the tone of his skin and his mane. You are one heck of a painter of horseflesh.

I think you did a fantastic job of a diffacult subject matter.......my only nit is that I still think there should be a small highlight inthe horse's eye that is on our left, faceing the light.......even if it isn't in the photo..........other than that you did great........
