I am needing help on doing a commission of a black cocker spaniel and there is NOT much detail that I can pick out and am hoping those of you that do dogs and give me some info. I can NOT see the nose at all ...went into the library to see if that would help and didnt. Looked on the internet and again nothing with this pose. Cant see the right eye either. well cant really see either of them. I cant ask for any more shots and the dog has passed and the owner didnt have many shots that werent destroyed earlier.

PLEASE can any of you help. Would be so grateful

Laurie

Hi Laurie,

Sorry to hear this little one is passed.
It can be a real challenge with poor ref. Here's a link to search results on google for dogs noses.
http://www.google.com/search?q=pictures+of+dogs+noses&hl=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=F19zT-__BM7SgQfQn7kr&ved=0CDUQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=662
I think there will be one there that will be close to the same positioning/pose.
as to the eyes, once you finish you initial sketch, it will be easier to give advice/suggestions if anything seems off as to proportions, etc.
It is unfortunate that the ref. is so poor, as the eyes are what are so very telling in an individual animal's personality. So, maybe with enough info about the dear deceased little one from the owner, you can put forth that character into the eyes.
I'm sure the owner will be thrilled, to have a wonderful memorial of their little one...and I know you will do great!!!!

What medium are you doing this in Laurie? Looking at the fur I think it would work well in pastel, but I'm not sure if you use pastel pencils/sticks?

thank you Barb .. that is a big help .. sheeeesh why didnt I think to search that way .. I am so illiterate at that part. :o :( I am gona be dreaming noses now

I am thinking either WC pencils or CP's or maybe a combo of them. I DO have pastels both stick, pencil and rembrant but I am not to good at using them :o :( thank you for your input

Thank you Greg looked at them but its the angle that bothers me appreciate your input though.

NOW after looking at the noses I am seeing a repeat of the same shapes .. can I presume that most dogs have the same nose OR are they different? I also noticed that spaniels seem to either black or a brown color. True?

Oye Vey- what a tough reference photo to work from. You are braver than I (this is the type that I turn down). Anyways I went digging in my old grooming photos and this one might be helpful. His head shape is pretty different than that girls, but other parts might help.

And yes, most dogs have somewhat similar anatomy to their noses, though there is some variation from breed to breed and how it is set on their muzzle, but the general shapes are the same.

Not my photo, but if you are just referencing other photos this one is sort of a similar to your dog --> http://www.flickr.com/photos/saslls/6883681333/sizes/l/in/photostream/ And a search in this group might also yield something useful --> http://www.flickr.com/groups/[email protected]/

Hey Laurie, maybe this will help, I lightened the photo and increase the contrast so you can see the nose better:)http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/28-Mar-2012/198534-edit.jpg

Hi Laurie, Can't add to the references given to you . Boy have you got a mission ahead of you. What a difficult reference. Am holding thumbs for you that you will be able to work something out. Will be watching with interest how you go about this one.

Laurie - best wishes to you as you work on this. Like Cathy I probably would have turned this down. I've worked from poor references before and it really is frustrating. I hope it goes well for you - please keep us posted on how it's progressing!

thank you Cathy .. I think that lower guy will help a lot with eye placement as well as the nose but have alot of noses to look at with what Barb gave me. The other shot of the ears is great help fro detail.

Nickib thank you for doing that it did help to see the shape of the mouth and a bit on the nose.

Chammmi..oh thank you ...its going to be quite the challenge but the one I am doing it for is a friend so how do u turn that down.

thank you Nancy .. I will put updates in here.

I am so thankful for my friends in here with all the help you give. What a great place to be

taking a BIIIIIIIIIIIG gulf and going to my art table and see what I come up with for a prelim.
