View Full Version : Dahlia W.I.P.

05-06-2003, 08:26 PM

I have always wanted to paint one of these, but my gardening abilities are very limited. My reference is Dahlia3 by TeAnne.

I usually start with either the flower, or the background, but only after I have sketched in the entire subject. This time, I started painting with only part of the flower drawn in because I needed some landmarks to keep me from getting lost. It is kind of like doing a puzzle. I drew in some of the prominent petals and dark negative spaces, and painted a few so I could see where I am. I will paint more of the petals next, before finishing the drawing. An odd way of working, and I hope it works. This is a quarter sheet. Would love to have done it as a full sheet but I think I would get really lost on a big one. I will post again when I have done some more on it. This is going to be fun!

I did some more work on this tonight. I am using permanent magenta, permanent rose, ultramarine blue, and a touch of yellow green, wetting each petal and touching the edges with the color.

It's 1:30 a.m. here in New Jersey, and I can't sleep. I've done quite a few more petals in this dahlia and it's beginning to take shape. I'm really enjoying this one. I'd like to do some more tonight, but I think my eyes have had it.

Your Dahlia is coming along well. I can't wait to see this when it's done.

going to be lovely, MIchelle

maybe I missed it, what size?

05-08-2003, 09:07 AM
WOW!

Michelle, beautiful work! When you wet the petal and touch in the paint to the edges, do you tip your board so the paint runs to toward the center or is your board flat?

thanks for sharing this WIP

this is gorgeous work Michelle!!!

I can understand you feeling lost if you had done it on full sheet....but just imagine how incredible it would be....why don't you consider this a "study" for a larger one? ;)

looking forward to seeing the finished piece

This is only a quarter sheet. I knew it would look great as a full sheet, but I was impatient and wanted to get started NOW!!! I thought I could sketch it freehand as a quarter, or even a half, but as a full sheet I would have to do a lot of planning, measuring, etc. I am a lazy painter who wants instant gratification. Now that it is almost finished, and I have gotten it out of my system, maybe I should start planning it as a full sheet.

By the way, I am enjoying this flower so much that I purchased a potted dahlia yesterday. It is a yellow/peachy color. The petals are not quite as long as this one, but it is very pretty. I am not good with plants, so hopefully I will not kill it too soon, and will have time to do lots of sketches and take lots of photos. Wish me luck with it.

Oh Michelle, this is turning out just loverly!!! Fantastic job so far!!

I haven't worked on this for a few days. This is what I got done this morning. At least I have some color on all the petals right now. Now I have to go back in and put a little more color on some of them, and some good darks. I'm going to try to attach TeAnne's photo so you can see what I'm going for. My painting is not as pink as it looks here, but I don't think it's as purple as the reference photo either.

I wish you could see my face. I am in awe. Beautiful.

05-11-2003, 01:14 PM
It is coming along beautifully! IMHO your painting is better then the photo.

05-11-2003, 06:35 PM
I LOVE your Dahlia, Michelle!! It must take alot of patience to paint all those individual petals! I tend to stick with the flowers with LARGE petals because of this ;)

You're doing great so far, from what I can see. And I think with just a few more darks and variation in color/value, you'll have a real winner!

And I agree that it would look spectacular in full size! :D

I know this isn't the plein aire you were referring to but I am glad I looked. This is awesome! I'm impressed with watercolor. Way too hard for me.

 I know you wont mind one more WOW!

magnifecent! show us more.

Absolutely fantastic!

The way it goes from the dark background to the light center of the flower is lovely

Michelle, just came out of lurkerdom and looking back on some paintings I'd seen but didn't comment on. And didn't realize it was your dahlia I was wow-ing over! Please share more - this is gorgeous. Such control to get the individual petals just right. Lovely work - want to see more, please!

Thanks everyone for your interest and compliments on my dahlia painting. This is the final version. Now I don't know quite what I want to do with it. I put in far too much time into it to get the wimpy prices I get on ebay, and I don't put quarter sheets in the juried shows. Maybe I'll just frame it and keep it for a while.

05-15-2003, 11:40 AM
Michelle, this painting is very impressive. It is so soft and beautiful. Keep showing us more of your work!

05-15-2003, 12:04 PM
It is exquisitely beautiful
and you have achieved a wonderful sense of depth!!!

05-15-2003, 01:17 PM
I'm just stunned. This is absolutely wonderful. It's a crime to get a low price on ebay for something of this magnitude. Way to go, you.. Hang it proudly.. :D

05-15-2003, 03:02 PM
terrific finish Michelle!!

I think you should frame it and consider it yours. Then sketch it out full sheet for a juried show!!! :D

I love the dark background and the subtle colour transition on the petals.

personally, I would have liked to have seen a bit more green in the center.:)

Says it all!

This has been a wonderful WIP, it was fascinating to watch your Dahlia grow on the paper. This is a beautiful rendition of a lovely flower. If I had seen TeAnne's photo, I don't think I would have known where to start. You did great!

05-15-2003, 05:10 PM
Thanks everyone for all your compliments. This one was a labor of love. Although I think it would look awesome as a full sheet, I don't really know if I would enjoy painting all those petals again. I'm still thinking about it. I would probably have to wait a while and so some other things first.

Michelle, this is amazing! I don't know how I missed this before..... but I'm glad I found it now... I have a terrible time with flowers, but I'm going to try the method you described in step 1. Thanks so much for sharing this - you are so talented!
