View Full Version : Homework Essentials of Painting Rocks- Week 1

Draw simple shapes of individual rocks and another with rocks in a group. Do this in black and white. Indicate the planes. You can use gray value markers with different values if you wish. A good way to get good rock shapes is to buy a basket full of large gravel at a landscape or gardening center. That way you can cherry pick stones with good abstract shapes or if you don't want to go thru the trouble just draw from photos. But I do recommend you get that gravel because it really works to cure dinosaur egg rocks problem. Gravel shapes are exactly the same as larger rocks.

I live in NE. We have rocks everywhere, even in the garden. Don't need to buy them:) A walk around the block should do it.

Won't buy any rocks neither. Live in the mountains, lot of rocks of any size just around the house. ;)

Hi

This is my first attempt at drawing rocks. I started at no. 1 and felt more comfortable by no. 4.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/25-Mar-2012/184661-004.JPG

Underneath that is a lake scene with rocks in the foreground. This was a very quick 5 minute sketch. I need to think about the light and how to represent it.

I am sure some of these rocks would have had some reflected light, but I did not address that in this exercise. Also, I tried to stay away from rounded rocks. I kept my potatoes at home! ;)
Thank you Johannes for another wonderful lesson. Carol

No scarcity of rocks where I live either, in the hilly, desert like area of Southern California. My back yard of 70 acres is a rock filled paradise. Our rocks are rather weather worn and not so angular so, when I paint them, I must be careful to keep them from looking like potatoes, lol.

My son and I looked for rocks around our neighborhood. It was quite a challenge since many of the rocks were quite round. I probably will do some more searching this afternoon. I did some quick sketching this morning in my pj's with the ones I found.

Hi Johannes. This is my rocks homework. I did individual rocks from my garden, as well as a grouping of them. I also did a drawing from the photo posted by paintncook. I missed the first fifteen minutes of class due to technical difficulties both on my end, and on Justin TV. I'm hoping you can quickly review next Saturday. Even so, it was an extremely informative and interesting class. Thank you.

edit to add that the image isn't showing the values very well.

Individual rocks only for the moment. That wasn't easy, I tell you !!! In the past, I've tried to paint rocks and never succeeded. :( Will have to work really hard to get something believable. Will study your paintings carefully, Jo.

Started by drawing some :

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/26-Mar-2012/661062-roches.jpg

Then, worked them in photoshop trying to separate planes :

Spooky coincidence about the rock sketches with planes. I was doing that during the lecture! Here's a page of them.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/26-Mar-2012/70184-3-24-2012-Rock_Sketches.jpg

These are from some of the rocks in the lecture slides, but I'll also do this again with whatever rocks I can lay my hands on as life sketches. I have boxes of them back in Arkansas but here I've only got a couple of loose ones and some crystals, fossils, fancy things.

The photo doesn't quite do the different values on the various angles of planes justice. I got so caught up trying to differentiate those values I didn't see some of the symmetrical shapes and had to go back and correct after wards.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/26-Mar-2012/197736-Hmwk1.jpg

I actually started doing rock exercises a few weeks ago but then I wrote all over them with Chinese brush pen samples so cannot submit. Here are some for today. I have been picking up rocks on my trail hikes for weeks and there is a plethora of sizes and shapes. I can already see some miniature mountains there. But I want to get these submitted then will go back and work on some more and see if I time to additionally submit. Especially after seeing what some others are doing. Great rocks!

I rendered my rocks with pen which was time consuming. Pencil or charcoal would be faster. I used gravel as the model. It was more difficult than I thought.
In review, I see that I left some geometric value shapes even though the rocks themselves are not geometric. This gets tricky.

I limited myself to just three values.

Johannes:
Here are my attempts at black & white plus color sketches, in pen and w/c. On the b&w sketch I tried doing a couple of rocks in one of my photos, using the grey pens for 3 different shades of grey. They did not come out right, but the more rounded boulders (as we see all around New England) look a little better.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/29-Mar-2012/946754-HW-Mar21-Sketches-BW-rocks.jpg

The two farm buildings are practice studies from one of Claudia Nice's books, not my photos. The other two are from pictures in Maine, and the boulder and tree is obviously incomplete, no color yet. And yes, the trees in the background of the stone wall do look a little odd... Haven't fixed them yet. bob.c

Take a photo, download to computer..then go to post a message here but use the advanced option to bring up the attachment option (paperclip) or, better, use the little picture with mountain and sun that is to insert. Insert your photo from where it is stored on your computer when the window comes up to browse for the photo and to download it.

I am going to try to watch on April 7th at 3am:eek: from Melbourne Aussieland. I thought it would be OK to tune in round 2.30am not three hours before(?).

I'm lucky to live where there is only a three hour (earlier) difference in time when it is broadcast. Of course, on the other side of the earth you are not so lucky and must get up in the wee hours of the morning to participate. Did I maybe confuse some people with my statement about living in So. California?
