Oil on Canvas 9X12
<IMG SRC="http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/27-May-2001/Flowersw.jpg" border=0>

Kelley's 3rd oil painting.
So far, she's averaging about one every four months! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

What do you think?

Cheers!

for the monochromatic background, the tight detail of the monarch invalidates the looser rendering of the flowers and stems.
I would lose the butterfly, or add detail intermittently including the background to bring everything to the detail density that is in the now (foreign) butterfly.

In a way, yeah the butterfly is a little crisper than the tones of the daisys are showing, and the butterfly looks to stiff. I think the overall comp is great! And your colors are just fine to me.
I'm not good on commenting a solid background..thanks to the last drawing I did. hee

Hi {{{Kelly}}}! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I think this is a terrific piece!

The background is in the best tradition of botanical drawings. I think the different treatment of the flowers and the butterfly give the piece interest and a bit of tension. I like the way a few of the flowers flow off the board. I like the black, white & yellow color scheme.

Very nicely done!!!

I like the piece but would consider carrying the, painterly, flower technique into the "negative space" to develop the figure/ground relationship...just a thought. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/wink.gif

I agree with you. And that the butterfly is rendered with more detail than the flowers makes it the center of interest, and I think it works well. To me too, the difference in the brushstroke styles makes the painting much more interesting than if it had all been done in the same way.

From Kell:

Thank you all for your wonderful critiques/comments. I was already planningon re-doing the background but didn't know what to do. Thanks, Chuck, I think I will use some light complimentary colors and try for a "brush stroky" effect. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Again, thanks for looking.

A+!!! Please do not change anything. Instead, start a new painting and make the changes there while preserving the first.
