I resized and posted again. Here I go again Mark..."tight as a drum". Maybe one day I'll loosen the "snare". I wonder what this would look like with your brushstroke mastery?

have you looked much at andrew wyeth's painting's? yours have a feel that is similar to some of his. he did exquisitely rendered realism, too.

I am not a fan of realistic work usually but this is great. What I like most is that I think great decisions were made (maybe away from the canvas). The man is conveying some deeply human feelings and sits so well in the surroundings. Great technique but even better choices!!!

Beautiful! I like realizm, so what if its not loose. Not everyone can paint that way and its not necessarily a bad thing. The man is perfect, I wouldn't change a thing. I only have 2 suggestions and that is regarding the background. One is that the grass and the trees are 2 distinct different colors and there should be some of the grass color in the trees and the tree color in the grass. Just enough to "marry" the two. The other is regarding the lower board on the fence which is going behind the knees. The board has two distinct sides going behind the legs and when it comes out the other side the board is smaller and no longer has two sides. Very minor details and you did the hard part perfectly!

I really appreciate the comments but I'll have to confess that I didn't have to make many decisions. This subject is a friend of mine. He asked me to do an original painting from a photo that was taken at some reenactment he participated in. The photographer would have to be complimented for this compo.

Thanks so much Elizabeth. As I was telling simon levenson, this piece was created from a photograph that was taken of the subject at a reenactment. I should have used artistic license and changed things. I agree...the grass and trees should have married but I ended up painting exactly what I seen in the photo. I don't know what time of year it was but the grass was very parched. As for the lower board behind his knees...this was a split rail fence. The middle of the board is angled with two planes on one side and a flat backside. The ends taper down and are flattened so that they can meet with the ends of other rails and "usually" fit into holes carved out in the posts. I guess the rails were nailed to the back of these posts. That was how they looked in the photo my friend asked me to paint.

Thanks TeAnne...It was done from a photograph but still an original painting. That's what I get for painting too closely to what I see...

LOL. I don't actually do computer portraits, however I did do three a few years ago, just fooling around, which I posted below. (post titled 'your input please).
Actually, I um, paint parrots. I've only been painting for a little over a year, so I am continuously inspired and amazed at the wonderful work I see here at WC. I want to try painting real paintings- landscapes, portraits, whatever I can try!

There probably is. I don't know for sure. If I get the job I've applied for I'll be working out of Mildenhall, U.K. covering six different countries teaching Air Force personnel how to troubleshoot and maintain the Integrated Electronic systems on C5 "Galaxy" aircraft. Of course, I plan on visiting all the places I can and see where art really got it's start. That's the reason I want the job so badly...we'll see.

I do appreciate the comment "looks like a photograph" but I hope to learn to soften the edges, block some colors (maybe not so smooth on the transitions) "splash" some paint...to put the artist into it, otherwise, I may as well become a photographer. Mark Hiltz style is what I'm after. His approach, although realistic, reflects his own fingerprint, if you will. Maybe I'm creative in my composition but I still draw or paint too much of what I see as is. If I keep this up I might as well capture the scene with a camera and be done with it.

Chuck Close (before the stroke), Alex Colville, Andrew Whyeith(sp?), all great realist painters. Any style is good when done well...and this is. Congratulations !!

This is exceptional as a photorealist work. I would find it more interesting had you added an interpretive, painterly element.

Thanks. I agree! I'm getting sick of photorealism. If I post this type now, there will be something to compare to when I post a more painterly technique in the future.

Its pretty difficult to crit your work, and I am really honored to be held in such regard by a man of your skills.

I know some civil war buffs who would kill for work like this. I also find myself agreeing with Simon that the critical element in your work is not the detail or technique, but the choices made. However, on this one I would have been tempted to lower the value in the light on the background trees just a bit to push the foreground lights.

...man I am really stretching to find that adjustment! Good luck on your job hunt, my friend, that would be a wonderfull opportunity!
