i think a simple messy grey, brown wash under and around the leaves and then a pale green or pail blue wash up in the flower region.

Looking great!

Sarah, looking good! Can't wait to see it with the background--I think that will be the key to "popping" the red in the tulips!

You little devil!!! You tucked a few more "tulip" leaves in there!!! Sarah, this has a "garden" feel to it... Bethany's suggestion is a good one...

Wonderful progress, looking great with all the delicate leaves intertwined.

You will have to keep the background very light as most of the flower and leaves are around mid tonal value. Then possibly you may need a few touches of darks amongst the leaves,

Rod.

hi everyone :)

thanks Rod! thanks for looking!!!
this is the background so far. i am going to need to darken the leaves and the third tulip isn't done yet. i have a lot of work to do but i am getting there.
thanks Carolyn but it really isn't the best i have painted. i am trying to get it to be a lot better than this.

thanks CharM. there are a few more tulip leaves :p do you think it is too confusing?
thanks Lyn. i hope the background gets better. i am trying.
thanks Bethany! i read your comments after i began the background. i hope you like what i started?

so, here is an update.

Well Sarah I have to have the different view here I liked it with the two flowers....oh well I didn't have time to post when you were asking just getting ready for my show today.....I liked the fact that you were daring and only put in two for me it worked anyway you are doing a great job with the painting part of it as usual.

LOL... No, Sarah, I don't think it's confusing at all... It adds some whimsy to the painting that is so typically you!

I like the background, but wish it was just a little lighter... The foreground is looking very good...

Well Sarah, I can't get over the fact that you actually liked painting all those leaves. Painting looks lovely!!!!! By the way, I too was fine with the two tulips, but like Alan, saw it too late to comment and apart from that would have been outvoted anyway HA!
