View Full Version : Lighthouse

It's been awhile since I've posted but a combination of health and a very busy time of year for me kept me pretty preoccupied for awhile. Any way I'm back at my watercolors and always happy to get the input of this great group of people. I've attached a painting of Highland Lighthouse in Truro,MA. I've reworked it several times and pretty close to signing it. Any thoughts before I actually do sign.

vERY VERY NICE! Brings back memories, as a youth I spent summers in Chatam and we would come over to Truro when the blues were running in the bay.

Lovely painting Art,
Reminds me of when we were on the Cape for a week having a family reunion.
Looks like very similar landscape as on the Cape.
Beautiful sky, lighthouse and fields. Really great job.

Nice painting....but I'm having a problem with the light source....if as your shadows suggest the light is coming from the left...why is the right fence not in sunlight and casting shadows also.. and...with the direction of your shadows...should there not be a shadow from the building??....its just what I see....:)

Thanks Hopefulbucky,CharM and Taghera for the comments. Always helpful and appreciated. I chose not to shadow the right fence into the grass area as I felt the shadows would be pretty close to the fence and would more or less be lost in the painting. I tried to keep the top of the fence somewhat highlighted but I think you are right that the fence itself got a little dark with the glazing. I think I can do a little scrubbing to correct this. Thanks again all for the help and encouragement.

Nice composition, Arthur.
One small suggestion - as you have 45 degree shadows from the fenceand the chimneys, you should have a 45 degree shadow from lighthouse and dormer window. Very minor, but I noticed it.
PS I agree with Tag there should be a shadow in front of the building.

good to see you again, Arthur
I agree with DOug and Hugh about light.....I think the painting would really sparkle if there were shadows and identified light source

Thanks all for the comments and most recently Pam,Doug and Hugh. I've made some shadow adjustments in this picture and tried to brighten the right sided fence a bit .Comments?
