A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Pastel Project for May
Project Leader: Redsy333
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Welcome to the Pastel Project for May!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since May is celebrated in so many ways, I chose the theme "Cinco De Mayo",to base this Project on!
The Mayan and Inca Indians were once great civilations that created beautiful temples and cities that are now ancient ruins. These ruins tell many a tale, and some hold their mysteries to this day!
It is your job to bring these ruins to life, by using your imagination and trusty pastels. You may use any of the refrence photos provided or choose one of your own. If you do use your own, please post it along with your progress shots!
You may want to create a new technique,try abstract, realism, or whatever your style. The only requirement is that you must use (oil,soft,or hard)pastels.
If you would like an added challenge, put the element of life within your picture. This can be plant,animal or human figures. Its really up to you!
Remember to post your progress pics and tell us all about your wonderful creation!!
Just be creative and have fun!!!!
*****WAIT UNTIL THE 30TH TO APPROVE...AFTER APPROVAL THE LINK TO THE ICON WILL NEED TO BE FIXED!*****
Additional Information:
For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=425)
Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.
WOW - LadyKeen, the toucan looks so vibrant - love those colors.
Craig - love the sky and clouds!
Still working on my project - using a pastel board I am not happy with - will have to see if I can conquer it! Canson MiTientes Pastel Board - lots of holes to fill in! I much prefer the Colourfix paper, but did not have anything big enough.
Hope you speedy folks decide do some of the other photos provided.
Kyle - thanks, and btw, if you really like colourfix paper - i found a guy who will sell colourfix primers for 7 dollars a container. let me know if yer curious (i don't get a cut :P and/or know him other than from ebay, but it's a good deal anyhow).
It's great fun to use them on cheap cold-press - saves money and the primer tooth is soooo nice.
Hi
this is my beginning sketch of the Mayans princess a photo I took in an antique shop, I don't know if it is a Mayans princess exactly but I think it closely resemble's one, after having looked at pictures. The two statues on either side which are part of this statue ensemble also seems to be representative of Mayans era.
I was having a problem getting the pic in here for comparison, and Dawn kindly said she would put it in, thanks Dawn!
I'll have an update on this today, right now it's sunny so I think I might go take some pics, possibly at this awesome antique shop I discovered. Have a nice day everybody...
PS- I am not getting any notifications from posts, I don't know what the problem is, I installed and UN-installed my email, clicked "subscribe to this thread" which I never had to do before, still doesn't work, so I've posted in the tech forum to see if anyone can help diagnose this problem, so if you notice I haven't responded this is why... hope to get it resolved.:rolleyes:
I couldn't upload the final (horrible) mayan princess, I sat here for 5 minutes waiting and finally it said that it was too big, which has happened before with other images. This one was sized down to 84 kb, and others that this problem occurred with were less than 100 kb.
This final painting turned out way too bad, but I was going to upload it anyway, I think the up-loader got a load of it and decided that it wasn't going to subject all of you to it. Well done, up-loader!
I was rushing to get it done, I shouldn't have joined this project knowing that I really didn't have the time, and my computer problems were still hounding me. I apologize for this!
Well I have to say that you all did a great job on this project. No time to enter but I did get a chance to check out the work thus far.
Since i'm having difficulty with the viewing of all the works on my computer, bear with me while I just make a few comments on each piece. I did it for Mo, but haven't had much luck with the others.... Does anyone else have this problem with "projects"?
Sabzero - nice job in such a limited pallete - you really defined those shapes.
Wendy, never heard of a "cutesy" description of MP but this sure looks like it's been captured on a distance hill with the blue cast.
Lady Keen - excellent use of color variety on your Toucan and those bold strokes are grande.
Redsy - love the abstract then and love it again now. It's a strong piece.
Alan - Well done on the Mayan princess - though I don't know about Rita Hayworth (too young I guess), I would describe her a demure and reflective. Nice job. Like the deep rich browns.
Craig - it's tiny but powerful in tonal change. I have no idea what colourfix is but I'm sure you'll tell us.
who have I forgotten???
Kyle - that purple in the midst of those warm tones is great and the green gecko sings.
Sorry if I missed anyone. B
Kathryn Wilson
B : I just tried to view all the photos in the project and they were slow in coming up (and I have a fast machine). The whole site seems slow tonight.
BTW, until you called my attention to it, I did not see that color as purple - my eyes see a reddish brown, but when I looked at the painting again, it does have a purple hue doesn't it! It certainly wasn't on purpose. It is one of my darkest pastels and I use it a lot.
Finally got started! Uploaded the WIP. Hope it was ok to to do it showing several photos as steps...first project, ya know! I really love everyone's interpretations...this is really fun to see the different styles too...and I confess...I was peeking at different things and hit join this by accident! I'm really happy I did...really a cool theme.
Dyin: I took a peek at your progress shots and it certainly looks great already - can't wait to see the finished product! Gotta try those OP's.
Kyle...Well, you seem to have your project done really well with those soft pastels but you never know...you might like the OPs if you try it out. Your color scheme is similar to mine and would work really well with the OPs. Can't wait to see what you think of them!
I've been working on exercises in Jackie Simmonds' book. One of the exercises had us draw circles with a black marker and use several compatable colors in the broken color technique to fill in the paper. I thought it would be fun to try the May project with this technique. I don't know how successful I can claim it to be. It seemed to need the black areas to be more solid, which I tried to do. It was really hard to cover the paper - I think it is Strathmore Charcoal paper and I don't like it. I think it would have come out much better if I had used black paper also. But, it was a learning process - I hope, and I am putting it in the project files for my entry. Any comments? Please be gentle.
Michelle
I love the colors in your rocks and what a fun way to do the project! Maybe next time you have to fill in dark areas you can use some dark blue covered with the burnt umber or burnt sienna...since it's two layers it'll cover more like you want and it makes a nice rich shadow...deep enough to be black but more lively...or as you say, use black paper...but then you wouldn't have gotten quite as vibrant a color for the rocks...did I mention I love the colors???:D
Wow! Mo. this is really wonderful. I had just printed out the ref photo thinking I might take a whack at it...and then I saw this. Adding the lizard was a great touch. I love the festive colors you added. Really has great interest.
It might be a first-ever pastel, but you must be proficient in some other medium. This is well done. Very simple yet gets the point across well.
This really caught my eye. You've done a great job with all those brown gold colors and the lizard is startling against that ground. Great!
Considering the original is so small, it is amazing what a beautiful painting it is when filling my whole monitor. Very nice work here. That blue sky really gives it punch.
I can see that that lizard might have made you cross-eyed but it makes for quite an interesting composition. Well worth the effort and perseverance.
thanks...good thing it was just a reference photo or it'd be lizard tail soup for dinner lol! Sheesh, there went any thoughts of doing alligators in the near future! Wouldn't you think any self respecting lizard would be green too? My husband kept saying it doesn't look right blue...I'm SO happy this one is done. Appreciate the kind words....maybe I should try something surreal while my eyes are still crossed!
