View Full Version : Fae Lynn's 100 Wolf Journal
03-15-2012, 07:46 PM
Hi Gang. Been a while! I am doing bunches of wolves to help a friend of mine in Scotland learn to do wolves. I love them too and want to learn how to do them better. So if anyone remembers how Colleen (Winecountry) did her 100 cheetahs and her 100 horses, this is along the same lines. I bought a special sketchbook for it and everything. This is serious, lol!! So here we go.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Mar-2012/39292-PC020427.JPG
That's the cover page.
I have more to upload in a bit, but need to re size the images before I can post em. nd right now, that's daunting as I have had a crazy day at work. I'll be back!:D
03-15-2012, 07:51 PM
Awesome!! I can't wait to see them. Love this one too!!:clap:Nicki
03-15-2012, 07:55 PM
I have a love for wolves too and this one really looks good so gona follow along on your journey.
03-15-2012, 08:13 PM
Gorgeous start, FaeLynn! Look forward to seeing more!
03-16-2012, 06:54 PM
This is a good one, FaeLynn. Is it done in oils or acrylic?
03-16-2012, 10:41 PM
Very nice FaeLynn! Look forward to more :)
03-17-2012, 12:15 AM
Just Beautiful FaeLynn!!!! Can't wait to see the next 99! Wow! What a challenge!
03-17-2012, 06:19 AM
You're off to a wonderful start!
03-17-2012, 07:40 AM
What an amazing challenge! Looking forward to it, I think most of us love wolf art, this looks like cp on blue pastel paper?
03-17-2012, 06:16 PM
Awesome challenge!! You'll be doing them in your sleep before long.
03-17-2012, 07:59 PM
Thank you, Patrick,Lexy,(btw it's pastels ..Rembrandts and derwent pastel pencil, on light blue/grey Canson Mi Tientes the smooth side)Pam,Barb, Peggy, mcassatt, Ginny, Laurie, and Nicki Thank you all for looking and commenting.
This is a learning journey, there will be some kind of finished looking ones and some just sketches. So here we are starting with some of the basics.
I offer numbers 2 through 9..
This is 2 and 3.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/17-Mar-2012/39292-Number2and3.jpg
4 and 5...http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/17-Mar-2012/39292-wolves4and5.jpg
6, skulls and head layouts..http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/17-Mar-2012/39292-wolves6.jpg
and 7 is the proportion sketch. Too rounded. Still didn't get it perfect but we're workin it.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/17-Mar-2012/39292-wolf7.jpg
8 and 9 just a drawing. Got 8 looking okay but 9 looks like an anteater. lol! Well, we ain't even 10% into it yet, so let's keep moving on right??
Input welcome as always :D More soon!
03-17-2012, 11:03 PM
Hey Fae Lynn! I love the body on 4, and the sketch with the two heads I think looks really good. I will be here watching:wave::clap:Nicki
03-18-2012, 12:00 AM
Ohh! I love your sketches FaeLynn! I like the first one, love that perspective!
I don't think that #9 looks anteaterish at all! I believe alot of wolves have the very slender muzzles, don't they?
Anyway, i will definately be back for the updates, and kudos for sketching the skull as well!
03-18-2012, 12:46 AM
Wow, Fae, these are awesome! It seems that you've had a great start to a large challenge, I know you can do it.:D I'm very excited to watch this progress. I have looked over Colleens incredible 100 cheetahs, these type of threads are so much fun to watch, thank you so much for sharing!
03-19-2012, 09:10 AM
great project Fae you re doing very well
03-19-2012, 06:38 PM
:D I really like today's drawing. May I present wolf # 10. 90 to go!
I enhanced the scan a little darker than the original so he'll show up better:)
might have to revisit this one for a painting :cat:
03-19-2012, 09:26 PM
go goin FaeLynn..love this one too
03-19-2012, 10:00 PM
I too am liking this one.:)
03-20-2012, 02:06 AM
Loving this one FaeLynn, and agreed it would make a beautiful painting!
03-21-2012, 07:03 AM
Wow, super drawings!
What a fun project too, and a great way to learn more about an animal. You might just inspire me to do "100 Loons" or "100 Eiders" :D
I'm looking forward to seeing your progess on this project.
03-21-2012, 08:11 AM
Your sketches and drawings are great! I will be following your journey of wolves, anxious to see more.
03-21-2012, 08:37 AM
Thank you Jimmie, Nancy, Barb, Paige, and Laurie:D
Nancy, That's a great idea, and one that I would be following and watching. I love loons and water birds!! It's a good way to learn, too.
Well, good, bad or ugly, I am posting what goes in this journal. I vow not to be tearing out pages!
This is wolf number eleven. I could pick him apart but ya know what, I won't. I think I got his feet better than the first few.
03-21-2012, 10:12 AM
I don't see anything wrong with this one Fae Lynn. His feet look great and the body and hair is all balanced ( don't you love my terms, lol) . I think the one before along with this one together would make a great painting!!:thumbsup:Nicki
03-21-2012, 01:42 PM
oh wow Fae Lynn, love number 10 and 11 is great too
I remember Colleen's threads well and its a great idea to copy  Like Nancy said, its inspiring to watch you and I just might need to come up with something like that too :crossfingers: :)
03-21-2012, 04:26 PM
Just getting my daily inspiration! I agree, I don't see anything wrong on this one, and I like how you've captured what looks like a challenge posture
03-22-2012, 09:37 AM
:) Number 12...http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/22-Mar-2012/39292-wolf12.jpg
I can see that his right front leg should have been back further... that's where that line shows it should have been...
03-22-2012, 11:56 AM
I love this challenge of yours FaeLynn, and the resting wolf number 10 is adorable! I will draw up a chair with the others and follow this progress!
03-22-2012, 07:00 PM
Thank you, Jenny! I am waiting to see if my friend from Scotland is going to join WC and put her wolfies in here too, as it is a challenge we have for each other... or I did ask her if I can just post hers in here along with mine. We share our wolves by e mail every time we get a new one done... I am so excited about hers because they are really good and she was afraid to try them!!! More soon...
03-22-2012, 07:01 PM
  lol it just struck me that wolf 12 looks like a dr seuss wolf lolol
03-23-2012, 04:44 PM
loving watching these :)
03-23-2012, 10:15 PM
 Hi Gang, thanks very much for your support and comments:) I value them a lot! Don't go thinking I am slacking on this project; it is important to me. I will be taking about a week off, going to see my mother who isn't doing so well, and she lives 1,300 miles away. Too far!! I will pick up when I get back, hopefully I can do a couple when I am away but won't promise it. I can check in on my Kindle though...and plan to!
Y'all take care and I'll be back soon.
03-25-2012, 10:48 PM
Have a safe trip FaeLynn and enjoy your visit with your mother :)
03-25-2012, 10:58 PM
Fae, have a good trip, your mother will be in my prayers!:)
03-25-2012, 11:05 PM
Prayers all around Fae Lynn, take care, and be safe, Nicki
03-27-2012, 01:08 AM
Safe trip and wishing your mom a speedy recovery!
03-27-2012, 03:17 AM
Fae , firstly I do wish your Mum better health. I am sure it will be a great joy for her to have you with her. Have a safe journey there and back.
Your 'Wolf Journal' is a wonderful idea. You have inspired me to do one on Warthogs (my favourite wild creatures). I love your drawings and am looking forward to seeing more when you return. Warm hug.
03-28-2012, 08:10 PM
Thank you everyone!! I am still up north, sitting at Mom's dinner table at the
Moment. I don't like trying to type on this kindle .. but I am happy to report that I got a nice wolf done. Y'all check Back soon to see him :-) I'll be home in a few days!
04-01-2012, 02:09 PM
:D I am back home now, but tired and beat! That's a loooong drive. It hurts to be so far away from my folks, especially when I can see them getting older and having health issues. Least they know I love them. Thanks for your well wishes for Mom, she has COPD and emphysema. Hard.
Anyway, we had a nice visit and I did 2 wolves up there at her diningroom table which is the spot where we play cards or sit and rattle tales and chat.. my Dad almost made me mess up when he was telling his jokes.
So here are number 13 and 14. Scanned straight from the journal like the rest of them.
By the way, Chammi.. I am so glad to inspire anyone to do anything :D Warthogs are COOL! I think it's neat when an unusual subject is someone's favorite. Reminds me of on my 50th birthday this past January, the very first song I heard on the Radio was my ALL TIME favorite musician, Gerry Rafferty.. I called the DJ to thank him profusely.. he said Gerry Rafferty?? Really?? So I think it is way cool to have something different as a favorite:D
Y'all can tell I am still loopy from the long drive. Let me go and post the wolves so you can see them.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/01-Apr-2012/39292-wolf131.jpg
04-01-2012, 06:39 PM
this. is. SO. cool!! I hope you do make some of them into paintings, or just further them into more finished drawings, they are awesome. and good of you to share! maybe I missed, but where are you getting your ref from, if I may ask?
04-01-2012, 06:59 PM
 Hi Chewie, thank you! I am having a good time with them so far. I get the ref's from a few sources, as I don't have live wolves to look at where I am; some from old wildlife calendars, (which I know I can't use as actual paintings because of copyright issues).. some from free-to-use sites, some from animal ref. photo books for artists. I am guessing that if I use one from say, a calendar or what not, if I put my "own" spin on it or change the angle etc...it's okay to use it. I know Paul Hawkyard sent me the ref for the very first one, and I can re-do that one sometime down the road, with probably better results. Some friends of mine sent me some wolf pics they have taken at zoos etc as well. So most of them, I have permission to use. (Don't guess it really matters though, if this is just like, a "for myself" project"?) Yes, I plan to do more finished ones as I move along. We're still only on 14 so far...86 left to go. If you look at the progression from the first few I did, I'd say I've done better on the last few. Thanks for checking in!:)
04-01-2012, 09:51 PM
You did a really good job with these! I'm glad you had a good visit :)
04-10-2012, 12:03 PM
This is wolf number 15..Now before you go laughing at him, which is quite okay,by the way, first understand... I am tinkering around with these new oil pastels. I wanted to be loose and spontaneous. I wanted to be very loose if I can make myself be.. so I took off my glasses for this one and did it in 20 minutes. LOL! I won't call it a "Fail" but not my strongest work by far..lol. So anyway, here's number 15. I promised to post em all, good, bad, or ugly. lol. I keep my word:D
04-10-2012, 03:10 PM
I could see myself hiding up in a tree with him staring at me!!!! ahhhhhh
04-10-2012, 04:15 PM
I think they are all great Fae. Super that you could spend precious time with your folks and enjoy your Dad's humour.:) I used to playe canasta with my parents and just had such a lot of fun. Also did crosswords with my Dad. We were both crazy about words and the English language. I like the fact that your are experimenting and just sort of 'going for it'. I've done that too with various mediums but never had the guts to show anybody. Hats of to you my girl!!
04-10-2012, 07:24 PM
These are looking great Fae! I love the background of the arctic wolf (13), and how you've achieved the snowy trees in 14:) I also really like the colors in 15!
04-11-2012, 01:47 AM
OH MY, if I took my glasses off, I'd be crosseyed just trying to hit the paper
04-11-2012, 08:23 AM
LOL Peggy! Yeah, I was both a little surprised and a little dismayed at how it came out.. but how do you know if you don't try, right? I think I can come back and do a more serious study at some point!
Thank you, Paige and Chammi- and yes, we played dominoes and scrabble too! It was a nice visit.
04-12-2012, 04:26 AM
Good job Fae number 14 is gorgeous
04-18-2012, 10:31 PM
 Hello friends :D
Here is number 16. I really meant to do him in ink and colored pencil, but before I went and got my ink pens and cp's out, he was too far done in graphite, so I just finished him up and vow to do a serious color one next time.
So what's that now, 84 to go? :cat:
04-18-2012, 10:55 PM
I like this one! Can't wait to see you do it in colors too!
This is so fun watching your progress with each one of these!

04-23-2012, 11:57 PM
 Number 17. I'm not even 1/5 of the way there yet!
I know this one's a little off, but I like him anyway. I was tinkering with color, like I said I was going to do!:cat:
I used Design Spectracolor, which I have a set of and haven't really tried out. (colored pencil).
Comments welcome and anticipated as always :D :D :D
04-24-2012, 07:29 PM
