View Full Version : crystal bowl of grapes
Thanks, Em for the reference photo. I was going to call this Grapes in a crystal bowl until I saw someone else had also done your grapes! Great inspiration. The crystal is difficult. This one is big, about 15 x 22 inches. W&N paints. Please comment!

Oh, this is exquisite! I particularly like the shadows; the rendering of the grapes with the deep, deep darks between them; the reflection of the grapes in the crystal, and the perfect hue of the grapes within the bowl being seen through the glass.
IMO, there is not a single thing that you could change to make this any more beautiful than it is!

Beautiful work, Kari!
Both the grapes and the crystal seem almost transluscent. You have wondeful colros here and a great composition.

This painting is a delight! How on earth do you do glass like that? And the grapes are so translucent that I was peeking inside to find the pips!!!
Thanks!!!! I think the yellow was the secret to making the grapes look translucent, sort of tricks you. I wasn't sure I had pulled off the crystal. I have to wait a few days and go back and look at my paintings before I can look at them without being so critical. I like it. Thanks again for the comments!!!!

this is truly awesome. i think the problem you are experiencing is that you still just see the shapes you painted in the crystal and not the effect it produced. it is truly amazing

Kari, this is absolutely beautiful!! The grapes seem to glow with the internal, transmitted light and the crystal is exquisite!!
Lovely!!
First off what a nice job on that crystal. It just really shines. If I were to try to suggest one thing for improvement (one of the things there's been lots of talk about on the forum of late) I would suggest that a few of the grapes be less "outlined" (for lack of a better word) all the way around. It looks to me as if all the grapes have darkend edges all the way around, but where light shines off the tops of the grapes - perhaps there you might want to allow the dark border color to find and finally disappear - this would soften the feeling of the grapes and at the same time give them more shape. IMHO - you should be proud of this piece - it's a real winner. - jti
Thanks to all of you for commenting. Thanks, jti, for the constructive criticism. If I do it again, I will try your suggestion.

Great job on those grapes and crystal. I love the variation you got with the grapes - they look good enough to eat.

Very good Kari. I like the variety of colors in the grapes. crystal looks very good to me. Like the translucence on the upper grapes.
Positively exquisite! I have started this in oils - it's a beautiful image. I love the way yours sings with light:)

Those grapes look good enough to eat... and the bowl looks like care must be taken not to break it! Beautifully done Kari...
