Hi Dave, I took several photos of the dog (Murray), and the owner wanted a Brecon Beacon BG because they walk there on some weekend.

So I composed this image in photoshop from two photo's

Well Iíve been given the OK and started the under painting. This is a large canvas and I sketch Murray freehand and overlapped the sketch with the photo within photo shop and made several corrections before I started this under painting, C&C welcome.

This is going to be stunning. You may want to check how things are lined up in his face. His muzzle seems to be straight on, and his eyes as though his head is turned and tilted slightly. I'm looking forward to seeing this finished, you have such a great style.

Thanks Giorgio, Murray is a beaut.
Thanks Frank, I love it when other talented artist gives good constructive comments. Sketching freehand onto a large canvas has proved to be out in a lot of areas when I photo shop the painted image over the original photo. The dot represents were some alterations are that I must do to keep the stance and the characteristics of Murray true. I was expecting few alternation but not this much.

It REALLY helps to use a grid Gary.

aRt4us
04-14-2012, 09:42 AM
Frank, I canít argue because youíre totally right, especially on big projects like this.
I'm usually pretty good free hand, I've had enough practise. I set myself a challenge with this big canvas and itís not too much trouble to alter. Time setting out a grid is greater to over lapping in photo shop, plus its boring.
Iím doing the alterations now and its fun seeing the improvement appear.

Many thanks Karen and Chammi, I will do my best to do him credit.
Alteration done, I'll carry on with the backdrop now.
Frank please feel free to comment more, if your fresh eyes see anything that needs tweaking.
I'm still in the alteration stage if needed.
I really enjoying the fight I'm having here, I just love painting myself out of trouble.

Most of the back drop is put in place, just within murray's shadow is left.
I 'll finish that off then leave the oils to dry. C&C welcome.

Rachel, as I mention before the owners are happy with the painting so far.
They love their Malamute and they just sent me this jokily image stating Iíve got his ears wrong.
Murray is a playful loving dog and loves to chase his tail.
Thanks for you kind comments.

OOOOOOH Gary...that face is just gorgeous. The eyes just draw me in and the background plays beautifully with him popping him off the canvas. I do wonder about the ears being so square though. I love how you've done that fur under his chin and wow can hardly wait to see how you do the rest of the body. You got me excited with this one Gary. I love black and white, just not when I have to paint or draw it :)

Laurie

04-17-2012, 02:10 PM
Thanks Laurie, for your inspiring kind comments. Donít worry about the ears theyíll work out fine on the final furring. Black and white like this must be painted while the other colour is dry where edge meets edge so you donít have greys mixing out of the wrong colour tone.
Iím working down his front legs right now and I think they look great. Will post more tomorrow.

Many thanks Laurie, Karen and Lisa, here some close-ups of the latest furring detail. The ears and mouth area will hopefully fall into line on the last detailing. I'm using several photos of the same dog within the painting so itís not an exact copy of the photo/shop mock-up.

How great is this, Gary.

The seeming tilted horizon, contrasting with the actual plane cast by his shadow, lends a disorienting sense of wonder to the piece. I seriously love this. Bravo.

Gary, I love this so much. The picture of Murray with the bunny ears put a smile on my face, and it seems you have captured his personality here! I admire how you've made him fit into the background, it doesn't look at all like he was just placed there. The owners are going to treasure this!
