04-29-2003, 12:03 PM
This is a 9" x 10" arches 140lbs. wcp, W/N paints ........and here's hoping that since I'm doing a WIP that I don't blow this one before I'm finished.......

Critiques are always welcome and if you do see something that needs fix, tell me.........

Here is the drawing with the very center painted using raw sienna, FUB, w/n yellow and a touch of Paynes grey.

Here I am starting the peddles using FUB and a touch of Indigo and a lot of praying........

Barb this is really beautiful so far. Your petals are luscious.

Could you please tell me what FUB is? I have seen it referred to in other posts and just can't figure out what it stands for. Thanks.

Keep posting your progress, it is incredible.

Here is just more peddles and the second on is all of the peddles, but need to lighten up in some places and darken in others as the peddles are all looking to much the same......lol:rolleyes:

Thanks Barb, Got the UB part but didn't know it was called French, duh, must be the blond left in me. Thanks for the info.

Looking forward to seeing more work on this painting. And now I need to get back to the work I am getting paid for, that is typing. Have a great day.

Barb, what a coincidence! What are you using as a reference? I spent all weekend looking for a non-copyrighted reference for a Blue Himalayan Poppy!!! I finally found someone who gave me permission to use their images--I was planning a mini-macro--I'm not as brave as you on size!LOL

It is really looking beautiful! Especially that wonderful center.

04-29-2003, 01:05 PM
Well the ref photo is from a garden mag. so not sure if it's copyrighted or not will have to give them a call. If I decide to sell I will get their premission first........lol Right now it's just a practice piece........

04-29-2003, 02:20 PM
Oh, I wasn't insinuating... LOL It's just that I thought you might have a personal reference photo!!!

That's what I've been doing the last couple of days--trying out different color wash effects, salt effects, bubble wrap, credit cards, leaf forms, etc. Using up the backs and fronts of all my failures! ROFLOL

I'm just sitting here, watching impatiently for the next image!

This is really beautiful. The colors just reach out! Great job!

04-29-2003, 02:37 PM
LOL thats ok Lyn, I know you wasn't insinuating.......lol but I did email them to get their ok as there are so many great flower photos in the catalog.......Oh yeah I did a light glaze of W/N blue over the peddles.......

and thank you mpopinz for looking and commenting......

Here is the i guess finished piece.......two versions though, because I'm not sure if it works or not .....so tell me which version you like, the second on is only cropped in photoshop not real life.......lol

04-29-2003, 03:13 PM
Barb, they are both great--however, I think the cropped one POPS more.

04-29-2003, 03:13 PM
It's marvellous !

Barb you are handling this very well and it looks like you are got another winner on your hands. Looking forward to seeing it on my wall next to the red popies.

04-29-2003, 03:22 PM
Thank you Lyn and Gilberte.......i think i like the cropped one best....only because i don't like the background.......

04-29-2003, 03:25 PM
Rich we crossed posted.......as for hanging on your wall, only if I redo it.....just not quite happy with it........but thanks for looking and commenting.........your a sweet heart......lol

Barb, gorgeous work. I think I like the cropped version best.

BTW, if I might be so bold, how do you do this? Do you do wet-in-wet one petal at a time? A wash of the lighter color and drop in the darks? A series of washes?

Thank you Darren, yes wet into wet - one peddle at a time......I put the really dark down and bleed it out. And then later I wash a glaze over it to tie it together......there really isn't any rhyme or reason the way I paint......I just go with the flow so to speak.......lol

04-29-2003, 03:36 PM
turned out great Barb. i like the cropped version better too

04-29-2003, 03:40 PM
Thanks Bethany.......cropped it will be......lol that was my vote.....

04-29-2003, 03:43 PM
Dazzling, Barbara!

Oh wow ! I just love these flowers. You did and excellent job.

This flower is an excellent rendering... But... IMHO... (just mine)... I would have liked the background without the grayish color in upper right, lower left... more of the golden background...

04-29-2003, 07:26 PM
Very striking!!! I never saw a blue poppy before.

I like the close crop better. That's what I usually end up with for my paintings also. The first one looks a little bit like it's floating.

Thank you Erin, Sandy, JustjoGA, Michelle, and Irene for taking the time to look and comment.....

Barb, I came in at the end of this thread! What a beautiful job you've done with this... When I first started reading, I thought you might want this done as a macro and by the time I'd gotten to the end, you had decided just that! Your painting style is one I envy... I cannot leave my tight, controlled compulsion with detail. You have conveyed that detail in a loose and wonderful composition!!! Kudos!!!!

04-29-2003, 08:28 PM
So beautiful, can't wait to see it finished, love that blue.

04-29-2003, 08:32 PM
Thanks CharM for your kind words........

Thanks Jan, I really consider it finished unless I see something after it sits for awhile......lol but thanks for looking and commenting....

04-29-2003, 09:20 PM
Just saw this, it's wonderful!!!!! I have had seeds for blue poppies in my draw for 3 years now. Guess I should try and plant seeds.

04-29-2003, 09:27 PM
Thank you Uschi, you should plant them their really a beautiful flower......

thanks for looking and commenting.....
