View Full Version : WIP - Forest Visitor (Goshawk)

OK, so this isn't the greatest of WIPs since it's almost done, but I pledge to do a better one next time. Truth is I usually jinx myself with WIPs posted to WC!...I start them just fine and then I often crash and burn about 1/2 way through, left with an incomplete thread and an unsuccessful painting ;)

In the early 90s, when I was on a break from painting, I helped some researchers study Goshawks. They're amazing birds...ounce-for-ounce, IMO the most aggressive boreal raptor. They're large, fast, maneuverable, with huge talons and an intense demeanor. It's no wonder they have been sought-after as a falconer's bird for centuries.

When I was doing my field work 20 years ago, I didn't take many pics that ended up being useful for painting...lots of detail shots for the biologists but nothing usable for a finished painting. Fast forward to a couple of months ago. After I started my animal/pictograph series of paintings, I had a "vision" of a finished painting of a goshawk perched on a Norwegian Runestone. Unfortunately I didn't have an appropriate reference of my own for the hawk and wasn't able to find a falconer in New England who was flying one. So when I ran across this pic in the RIL that totally captured the intensity of these birds, I was pretty excited. Thank you to the contributor (and if I get this one printed I'll send you a free print).

The runes are written in Elder Futhark and a rough translation is: "...the visitor from the forest...I, Falk [falcon/hawk], which the great gods made...protect..." It seems the only gift for languages I have are for ancient germanic-types - not terribly useful in today's society I know :-)

This is a 30"x20" oil on cradled wood panel. Will try to finish today and post the completed pic soon!

Thanks for looking, and C&C welcome.

Wow, this is stunning already. I love how the colors from the sky are reflected onto the rocks and the falcon. You've have definitely captured his/her's intense look!

Stunning painting thus far! I really like that you chose backlighting for this piece. The rock texture, as usual, is perfect. :D

A little more done this afternoon. I'm going to put this aside for a couple of days before I take the final pic to give myself a chance to make adjustments. I think it's close though...

I love this as usual when I see your work.. one thing I notice though, is the angle of his wing and the position of his head, almost makes it look at first like he has an unusually large beak. I'm sorry, my vision isn't what it used to be so that's what jumps out at me. I love your rocks!!
