Here's a piece I had to (so that I didn't go crazy!) work in in-between commissions and more stressful paintings. I love Hyacinth macaws-- besides being gorgeous, they have amazing personalities! It's so sad to remember that they are endangered.

This is watercolor on rough, with just a little bit of actual copper leaf to form the rings. I intentionally left the gilding on it rough around the edges, to mimic the look of the watercolor. The copper, being actual copper, didn't scan well and looks dark, but in person it's a lovely shiny burnished copper that shines when you walk by.

knowing them well as I have a friend that raises them you have done a splendid job and hit the mark on this one. I have never seen anyone use actual copper will that still be3 archival? That background really sets the macaw off. Its just jaw dropping beautiful.

It is a sad thing that they are endangered but with breeders like my friend hopefully they can be saved. I think she is in a program that will eventually reenter them into the wild or at least I heard talk of it.

Gorgeous painting, Jennifer. My husband absolutely loves these great birds (well, I do, too) and I'll have to make a point to show him this thread. He'll love it. I saw one recently up close and personal in the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, PA. They are so impressive! So is your painting!

Thank you! The copper will achieve a weak patina over time unless it is sealed, which I plan to do. Patina is very pretty, but the thin lines of it that I have might look strange with patina. It looks best on larger areas of copper.

Thank you so much!
Funny you mention that; while I have had the pleasure to work with them in the past, I never took any reference photos as I didn't have a camera back then. The references I took for this painting was from the hyacinth at the National Aviary, myself! We go at least once a year.

Dang! That's spectacular! Love the bird, the background, the foil... the whole package! Especially pretty the way the watercolor drifts off at the edges. Well done!

Lovely work! You have definitely captured the beauty of these birds. The blues and the background (real copper? That is awesome!), compliment one another really well.:)
