Hello colleague,
This is my contribution for the ‘Animal’ project on the site of Maury Kettel.
I did this after a photo from a turkey, though the head is more that of a pigeon :-).
My problem was to avoid detailed, dark painting and instead creating a loose watery look.
Still keep some firm definitions.
This is the best I could. I’m not satisfied, but it gives the direction I want to go: a good balance in found and lost edges, a role for the white paper , use of pure color, avoiding detailed and calligrafical work, ‘alla prima’ painting...
I’m not in control of water and paint like you see...
I’m satisfied with the composition, I found it that way on the photo :-)…
The paper is Bockingford 300gr, I used cereleum blue, ultramarine blue, cadmium red, hookers’green, alizarine crimson and burnt umber, size of the painting is 21x14 (cm)
Any comments welcome..

HI Jan,
I like it a lot. Animal painting´s not my favorite but you´ve created a fine composition with few things and loose brush strokes, I admire that .

Jan, reading through your goals, I'd say that you achieved them very nicely... While your bird doesn't look like a turkey, he does look like a very interesting pigeon... Artistic licence... The colour, form and composition are beautiful.

Love your title--the poor turkey is BLUE with cold!! LOL

Really a very nice painting--I like how you achieved the rounded body with just touches of color.:)

I like this.
the main concern I have is the roundish paint on the lower right of bird. A
bit distracting my eye keeps going to it.

I think it just needs to be soften a bit.

Phillip,
An interesting remark that you made about the roundisch paint on the lower right of the bird, that distracting your eye.
I think a dark value is needed there for balancing the darks in the upper lefty. Maybe it is distracting because it is a blur?

Rapolinia,
Thanks for your reaction and appreciation.
Ciao

I really like this. It's a little different but I like different sometimes. I like the looseness of it also.
