Just finished this one. It's a 10x24 oil on masonite. Something a bit different for me, but good practice, for sure. Comments always welcome!

very interesting arrangement and I really enjoy the varied textures. Fabulous rendering of the subjects. The only thing I had trouble with was finding the edge of the table (am I right that the blanket/cloth drops over the side). At first glance it appeared all on the same plane. Could be my monitor! Perhaps if you could include a larger version of the whole picture.....

Here's a bigger pic for you Zotma. Don't know how much better you can see the edge in this one either, really, but I do think it's clearer on the original.

Thank-you Zotma, Dornberg, and Alva!

Wonderful piece of art!

Nice...I especially am drawn to the cloth, which thankfully is not all smoothy-smoothy and overly soft---it extends and echoes that delicately brittle sinus cavity bone. That area is always mysterious to me and you've translated it well...sort of Holbeinic in the way it is not a dry imitation but a slower, more storylike look...I guess what I'm saying is when you look at a piece sometimes that is all emphasis on light striking or shadows flying or warmy/cooly all over it becomes just another instant, but a person can still be realistic, yet say "whoa, slow down...come in and linger with me a while" without doing this merely with details, and I think that is what I like about this.

Thank-you Lizelle, ArtyHelen, and Bri. Bri, I think you made me blush. While painting this I thought of you, especially with the skull.....those little bone thingies in the nose were rather problematic, and with your bone/skull expertise, I wondered how you handled that. I was afraid of getting too detailed and making that area overworked, but I also wanted to bring it out, you know? One of the things I was trying to achieve with this painting was to work without any mediums at all, as I've found that using straight paint keeps me from getting too tight and controlling with things. Of course, it makes it a bit tougher to get into the details! LOL!
I love bones; have a pretty extensive collection of them, as I find them everywhere. (Weird, huh?) One of these days, when I have the courage....lol....I will do a still life of bones. That bleached bone white is a real challenge!

I am mad for repeating patterns and rhythms, and so I like the holes of the cloth, the similar holes in the skull, and then the texture of the rope. And yet, while those repeating patterns ground me, there is an angst in the composition that keeps me from being too comfortable. btw.... were your ears burning this weekend? Aurora, didn't you paint hanging moss awhile back? We were thinking it was you on Amelia Island this weekend, and were oohing and aahing that painting.. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

LOL Jane, that was my painting, you're right. Cherie has it now!
I looked at the pics of you guys in the Cafe....looks like you had a great time. Sorry I missed it, actually. I probably could have made it from Georgia to Florida, but I had to be here this weekend, alas. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/frown.gif
So, anybody got any ideas for a title for this? I keep coming up with "No Bones About It" but I think I want to save that for a still life of all bones. I'm stumped, actually......

OK.... a title suggestion....

"Blood, sweat and tears"

Look at the pieces, and think about it.....
...they could represent wine, water, and death...hmm???

btw....lucky Cherie! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif
