The things we artists are reduced to, to keep paying the bills! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/wink.gif

I'm trying to do a few pieces of art that will sell OK on eBay, hence this little chap. I don't know cats, and I don't particularly like them although they're cute on pictures. So, have I got him OK?

More importantly, I've hit my same old problem. Is he OK like this, or does he need some kind of background detail? I'm useless with backgrounds. I am aware that he would have looked sweet sitting in some flowers ( hey, we're talking sales here, not good art! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/wink.gif ) but now I've finished his paws, I'm not gonna get any grasses to go in front.

Personally, I do like him just like this, but I'm very aware that there is a fear of white space and blank backgrounds that runs thru this group, and it's starting to scare me, too! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thoughts please!

Helen

Adorable - reminds me of old fashioned children's books illustrations. I'd leave the background white.

I know what you mean about ebay - they love cats there. Careful you don't spend too much time making ebay art and find none left for your own work! I am speaking from personal experience!!! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/frown.gif I have dropped the ebay habit for now...

Hi Cindy. Thanx for looking. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif Yes, it does have an old-fashioned book illustration quality to it - I knew it had some 'feel' to it, but couldn't think what...

I hear what you're saying about eBay. Thing is, I need to make some money, and that's a fast and relatively easy way to do it.

Also, although I now know I want a 'career' in art, I don't know which direction I want to take. I've reached a stage where I really need to decide where I want to go, but I can't. I've been giving it a lot of thought over the last few weeks. I do so many different types of art that I can't settle with one direction. I bought the Artists and Graphic Designers Market book, but it has so many choices that I'm more confused than ever! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/frown.gif

So at least eBay is keeping me creating while I give it more thought!

Do you know where you're going?

aaaaahhhhhhhhh .... *snicker*

I hate cutesy!! I love his pretty blue eyes though.

Last week my guy posted a picture of a kitten romping through long grass on his journal website, and I was making fun of him..... so I turned it into a banner with "Argyles den of kitty lovin' -- welcome to the jungle baby!" on it.... *smirk*

my point... oh my point is not only would this make a great illustration but it would also make a good web graphic.

(check out my kitty banner vs his old banner at : http://www.xanga.com/argyle )

HEY!! You stole my title! (http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/Forum21/HTML/002605.html)

But AWWWWWWW! anyway!
It is a real cutie. I had a kitty like that once.
Here is a suggestion and as I have never been able to make a penny on my ideas, I pass them on to the more motivated:
I bought some avery announcement cards, the 1/2 sheet size, in white and ivory, and when I finished a commission I printed a couple to go along of the portrait JUST IN CASE they wanted to send them as note cards.
This little guy and a few more scanned in and printed might make a really nifty note set.
Like three pix, twice each for a 6 pack and sell them for $2 a piece. $20 for a 12 pack?
Never got around to it, but it is a neat way not to give away the cow just now and have a little cream before you sell the original.
Just a well worn but unproven idea.
AND he is a cute tyke!

ohhhh by the way.. when I said I hate cutesy, I didn't mean this work in particular, I actually think you did this wee fellow very well.... for a non-cat lover..... if you get what I mean... am I digging a bigger hole? should I just shut up? yes? umm ok!

Hi there:
Think you have done a wonderful job on the kitty, such great texture and feel to it. I maybe would have done a light grey wash in the background just to make the kitty stand out from the background.
Great job!
