View Full Version : "On Retrieve"...just finishing up
03-06-2012, 12:18 PM
Hi everyone:) ,
working on another Pastel on Ampersand, size is 11 x 14.
I'm just about finished with this one I'm calling "On Retrieve". It depicts (I hope) another Spinone Italiano heading out to retrieve a fowl.
I'm trying to do more Dogs set into BG's, so I hope I haven't 'overdone' this BG.
Still need to finish all that grass, which for me, is no easy task:lol: , and pull some of the fur into the BG.
I would love your input so far. Any comments, as they will help me improve, are most welcomed!

The dog looks very well Barb. But one thing that looks odd is the rear legs, particularly the left one, which needs a reflection if it is in water.

Nice work Barb! It has a dreamy feel like an illustration from a children's book. I love it!

Thanks so much Orchid Lady and Jayde!
I've finished it this evening, but am unhappy with the quality of the photo taken at night. Will need to reshoot tomorrow, but I hope you can see enough with this one.
Thank you so much for your kind comments!

I think you have done a splendid job here. Love your 'hairy' retriever. Well done with that grass. I know how time-consuming it can be.

Looking good. Well done on the background, I don't often have the patience for them.

Lovely piece, the recession of the trees works very well :)

This is a happy piece, a dog doing what he was meant to do! I love it.

I love it Barb, you have done a super job on the background, you really created the sense of distance in the piece, I struggle with this, but you pulled it off - fab!

Dancing Rabbit-thanks so much for your nice comments!
Chammi- Thanks so much! Yes, the grass was a bear! LOL!
Kanielle- Thank you as well! I'm trying to improve on my BG's but this one I'm still on the fence about.
Jason- thanks so much for your comment, as you know how much I admire your work. I am glad to read you think that the trees are receeding enough, because I was unsure of that aspect. ANY tips you can give me would be so appreciated!
Linda-Thanks so much for your wonderful comment!
Lexy- Thanks so much, I'm glad you like the BG. I'm going to try and do more full BGs in my work. I really think it helps to tell the story of the piece.

Barb this OS great, I would add some highlights to the grass to the left in the foreground. Just a bit. This is going to be nice!

Very good Barb I love the expression of the dog:clap:

Nonie, Dave and Robert- Really appreciate your comments! Thank you!
Dave-I've taken your advice to heart and have added a bit more light to the foreground.
I've had a very difficult time getting a good picture of this one, and so after what seems hundreds of attempts, I've settled on this one as it is fairly close to the original.
It is now done!(I hope):crossfingers:
Thanks again for all the wonderful comments!

Cracker Barb :)

Beautifully done! I do find it a pity that the dog's face is so close to the edge, I'd have like to see some more room there. Wonderful job on all the textures; the fur, grass, and leaves.

Jason- Thanks so much for dropping in to take another look!
Frank- Right you are, the composition is c*ap(my word for it:lol: ).
I thought many times, as I was painting this one, that I had sketched the dog too large, and too "front and center". Doing the more detailed BG was trying to compensate, but as you have pointed out(and I agree:smug: ) doesn't work well. Oh well, I will definately try to work on the composition more next time! Thanks for your input!!! It is helpful to me to improve on my work.

Love this one too. It reminds me somewhat of the work of Garth Williams... so much personality. Very nice. The background also has a real old school feel to it. Good job!!
