Well, I got inspired by TJ to do a Mustang. I found an old photo of the mustang we used to have...I posted a pic of it in watercolor I did a while back.

Anyhow, here is my WIP. Comments/critiques welcome. Let me know what you guys think!

Prismas, 16"X20", Dk. Grey Strathmore

Looking wonderful! What else could we think!? Hey, I didn't know there were blue-eyed mustangs! Neat!

04-24-2003, 04:15 PM
This is looking really great! i love how you've done the forelock. looking forward to seeing this one done, as well as your 3 paints piece!!!!!

04-24-2003, 04:23 PM
Hey Steph this is great!!!

love this forlock so far!

sure there are blue eyed mustangs CJ, you get blue eyes when you have alot of white on the face, such as in paints or bald faced horses. Horses with no white or minimal white will have natural colored eyes.

can't wait to see your mustang fishished steph.

Thanks guys! Your comments are what keep me motivated!

Well, here is an update. I have worked on this for an hour straight. I keep messing with the forelock...for some reason it's driving me nuts! I think I will leave it now.

I will blend in the left side of the face.

Let me know what you guys think and if anything needs fixing.

04-24-2003, 09:34 PM
Well quit messing with it it's perfect!
Wonderful use of different colours in it too!

Go Stephanie GO!

no critiques! This is already looking wonderful. I'm amazed how good you are at WC!!! The horses just emerge from the paper like magic.

04-25-2003, 01:06 AM
Stephanie!! 2 works! 4 horses! And managing all those baby horses being born! all on the go at the same time!! Could you sell me a bottle of whatever it is that's giving you the energy?? Please??;)

This is looking great (as usual!) so far. Looking forward to more of this one, too.

04-25-2003, 09:47 AM
Looking great, as always! If you weren't so nice I'd be SOOOOOOOOOO envious, as it is, I'm inspired to work harder! This is another one that's going to be absolutely amazing. :)

Thanks guys! You all keep me inspired!

Here is another update. This is going fast and is qucikly becoming one of my favorites (unless I screw it up)!

04-25-2003, 12:07 PM
This is looking excellent!!!

04-25-2003, 01:17 PM
Looking good Stephanie!!

I forgot to mention before, I really like how you did the forelock.

04-25-2003, 01:32 PM
Hi Stephanie--I too love the way you have shown movement in the forelock very effective. I also love the way you are varying the coat colors. Anxious to see this one finished...

Thanks guys! I like how the forelock turned out too. It was a challenge!

Here is an update. I got the nose done. Hopefully I will get the whole head completed tonight. Next I will do the mane.

04-25-2003, 08:07 PM
Oh Stephanie. How do you do it?!!

This is awesome as usual !!

(I have been away from my puter for 40 hrs. Now I have to catch up.....:) )

Thanks Sheila!

Well, I got alot done last night. Still left to do is the ear and some touch-ups. Next I will tackle the mane  .
What fun!

Here is a close up:

04-26-2003, 02:55 PM
Very nice! I'm finding it especially helpful when you post close-ups! It's easier for me to see how you're blending the colors and using different colors for the shadows and highlights and midtones. I'm really, really impressed with everything you've done! I look forward to your next update!

04-26-2003, 05:15 PM
Thanks Suzy! I will try to get more close-ups for you.

Here is an update. I finished the right ear and the head and am now starting to lay in the (somewhat tangled) mane. Wish me luck!

04-26-2003, 09:47 PM
Oooo, you're working on the mane.....I want to see how this turns out. I started on a horse in cp's & I don't like the way I did the forlock. I see now I should have put the highlights in first, I'm so used to using pastle pencils. I can go back & highlight after I have put in the darks. With cp I find you can't do that. Oh live & learn..... I can't even show it to you coz my scanner is down. *Big Sigh*

04-26-2003, 09:50 PM
it's looking wonderful so far! It's great seeing how you do the mane..I hated the way mine came out in my last horse painting so this is a great education!
Great job!!!

04-27-2003, 12:12 AM
Stephanie - your picture is stunning. I just love the colours and the texture. My first love has always been horses and this is fantastic.

One thing is bothering me though - it's the mustang's left eye (on our right). It just seems to be too small but also too far back. Some sort of perspective or something when comparing the two eyes seems to me to be not quite right. Otherwise, I love it (and also a bit jealous - I draw horses and would love to be as good as this!!).

04-27-2003, 12:35 AM
Wow Steph,

this is gourgous!!

I just know this is gonna be gourgous! It already is!

Wow this is looking just as good as your previous work and they were outstanding to! I've just ordered some Prismacolors from America a couple of days ago and can't wait to get them!

Night Horse Studio
04-27-2003, 02:25 PM
Thanks guys!

Yeah, I know the perspective on the eye is off. It was too late by time I realized it. It can't be fixed now and I don't want to start over (too many hours and alot of pain with the mane).

Sheila, I used to put my highlights in last also. I find it's much easier and it looks better to put them in first. I found some the other day from when I used to put the highlights in last and I was like "Oh, what was I thinking"! They were horrible!

Here is an update. Still alot of touching up to do on the mane. I really don't want to fuss with it too much - afraid of messing it up.

04-27-2003, 02:40 PM

Looking sooo good!! I didn't notice that the eye was off?? But then I don't know horses that well. It looked fine to me!

(sshhhh! don't tell anyone else, they won't notice either) :D

04-27-2003, 02:54 PM
That mane! It's going to be gorgeous! I'm having flashbacks of my Shetland pony coming out of the wooded pasture with his mane tangled like that!!! Great job! And THANKS for the close ups!

This one is just absolutely gorgeous. That's all I can say. On another list I found this message re: an art show about wild horses and mustangs. I think you should think of entering:

:I just found out about this upcoming :show, if any of you have work that :involves wild horses/mustangs (not the :automotive variety). It's the first year, :but I am going to give it a try!!

Thanks guys!

Maragaret, thanks! I will check this out!

Here is an update. I got a small portion of the mane done. It is a pain when you have to do a small section at a time. There is still alot more detail to go into this section.

04-29-2003, 12:41 PM
that mane !!! it's gorgeous in its tangled-ness! can't wait to see this finished!!!

Wow you must be working with a magnifying glass to paint such detail!

Thanks, guys!

Sorry I haven't posted an update in a while. Here is one. Will try to post another update soon.

05-13-2003, 01:26 PM
Hey Steph!

finally got us an update huh?;) I really like how you handled the mane on her - and the colors are awsome. love the way you can "see" it dancing in the wind.

Only one question - her neck seems awful thick... is it the angle shes standing or was she built like this?

05-13-2003, 01:51 PM
This picture is coming along wonderfully. I can't wait to see the finished project!

05-13-2003, 03:47 PM
This is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

05-13-2003, 05:32 PM
I cannot say enough times how incredible this is! Great job! Now for the questions... Is the patch of light color there near the withers jasmine or cream or another color? And are you pretty much lying in your base color very thickly, and then adding detail over that? (Trying to glean as much info as possible for future reference!) Thanks for the pointers!

05-14-2003, 12:09 AM
This is fabulous Steph.
I have a question for you too....Do you spray a fixative over some layers & then carry on? Also what kind of paper are you using? If you have said before, I can't remember.

05-14-2003, 06:13 AM
Oh, Stephanie, you are a wizard with these pencils & horses.

05-14-2003, 09:38 AM
Oh wow!! tihis is soo great! that mane looks like it was veeerrry tedious....:p as usual, can't wait to see this one finished!!:)

Thanks guys!

TJ, her neck is thick. I accidentally made it a little thicker than it should be. I will post the ref. so you can see.

Suzy, it is Beige. I do a heavy layer, then go back in with a lt layer of Sienna Brown and add details.

Sheila, I don't use a fixative until I am done. I find that I don't care for the results when I use a fixative between layers.

05-15-2003, 10:40 PM
Man-what a ref pic to have to draw from!! the neck looks finr to me; i didn't notice anything until it was brought up. :D

05-16-2003, 12:21 AM
OK..I cannot say enough./...I am in AWE!!!!!!! I am never gonna pick up a CP again.... You are unbeleivable ... You definately have to do my "old Guy".....

05-16-2003, 10:27 AM
Steph - the neck looks great - b-cuz u made the head proportionate - it looks marvellous!!! I think this is my favorite 1 that u have done so far - I'm blown away by the mane!!!

Thanks guys!

The ref pic is fuzzy but is clear in real life. That was a bad pic of the WIP because I took it last night when it was storming.

Here is a better pic. Almost done...YAY! All that is left to do is the bright highlight patch on top...blending and doing longer hairs. If you see anything that bothers you, let me know.

And a close up:

Stephanie this I believe is the best one yet from you, your attention to detail is fantastic. Well done!

05-17-2003, 03:35 AM
Stephanie, I'm sorry but I have a big problem with this....

Seriously though, it is really exceptional! I just love the way you have done the mane, incredible detail! Way to go girl!!!

05-17-2003, 09:51 AM
Yup that turned out amazing!!!!!!!
I just LOVE the mane and the hair pattern on the shoulder!

humm now you wanted to trade some art didn't you???;) ;)

05-17-2003, 03:16 PM
I love the "witches' knots" in the mane ... I've seen a lot of those on the range horses we used to run up in Montana.

05-18-2003, 11:35 AM
Stephanie you continue to amaze me.. Even when I think you couldn't possibly get any better...Your CP work seems to improve with every stroke.
I believe I like this one the best as well..but if I went back and looked at the past ones, I know I would have a very difficult time choosing a favorite. Just keep them coming!

Thanks guys! And I feel good about this one because it was my own photo. There are many more to come from my own photos. I have a whole roll to be developed.

Well, it's finally done!! YAY! I know what I am going to do next. It will be started and I will post the WIP today. I think I will leave you all hanging in suspense! It will be small, a 9"X12" and then I will finish the 3 Paints running.

05-19-2003, 01:22 PM

Oh Stephanie, this is outstanding!!! Beautiful work!! I can't get over the mane & the detail you put into it. My jaw keeps dropping every time I see this piece.

One thing I remember you saying is that you don't take good pictures of horses. I guess in your defence, you can turn a "bad" photo into a gorgious piece of art!!
BTW, I love your photos, I would like to see more of your little babies.

Oh, & I will be waiting like the others for your next WIP.

I'll give you a rating of 5/5 clappies

Thanks guys!

Don't put your CP's away! Try them, you'll love 'em! I especially would like to see you do a horse in CP's!

I am never really busy. I always try to find time to do art. I love creating a horse with colored pencils. It's always cool to see what I can come up with, I never get tired of doing it.

05-20-2003, 06:17 PM
Pencil work is excellent as always steph!

Feels good to work from your own photos dosen't it? Like you really did create it from start to finish ;)

I love the area around her withers - and the way her mane falls in ropes - well done
