He's beautiful! I love Big dogs (the love of my life was a Newfie). The color really jumps out at you -- it's very pleaseing... and the wrinkles I like especially. Great job!

Dana, watercolours are difficult arn't they! Especially for detailed work!
Can you post the reference photo so I can see how it's going? I'm not sure if the area underneath the jaw needs darkening but let us see what the photo shows.
You have mastered a lovely blending technique!
What size brush are you using, probably the same as mine for my animal paintings.

Just one last question. What paper have you used? Seems to be tinted or have you used a coloured wash over normal w/c paper?

Ahhh....he's turning out really cute! Great job Dana! I look forward to seeing the finished piece.

Paul the ref picture is here. (http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/showphoto.php?photo=13867&papass=&sort=1)

Such adorable animals!!! I marked some of Cathy's bulls! I believe one of them was this photo, too! You did a great job, on this one!!! Got his personality! The watercolor is done beatifully!

You mentioned that this was on the small side; what size?

Took a small break and did a few still life paintings (a Mr. Waddles series). Was also distracted by a fun Acrylics project! (LOL-My entry was a painitng of the grapes). I should get back painting dogs!

Again, great work on this piece!

(LOL) Mr. Waddles was a small series I did for my little ladies' room (2y and 3 1/2y old).

Easiest to just show you than to describe :D , so; this is the First (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99575) and the Second (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=100921) and the Last (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=101956) (for now) in the series.

Again, I think this Bull is a wonderful piece! If you were to do flowers, would you also try a new medium?

Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see more!

05-05-2003, 11:40 PM
LOVE this.
Very nice pose, great details.
He's incredible as is, but if you're looking for total nitpicks - his eye could have a little more sparkle, and more vivid color right near it to draw the viewer to it -and regarding the nose/ear etc areas, the photo made me think you could get even more wild with the blues/violets there - - - but certainly not necessary to make him stunning.

05-06-2003, 08:00 PM
Thanks Cheryl..It is one of Crias photos!
I actually toned down the blues and violets!! Sometimes I think someone would look at that and say..dogs dont have blue in them!! I also added a little more sparkle!

How funny - you're right though, not everyone would understand. <g> I'm always looking for excuses to put as much color as possible in everything I paint. But yes, sometimes it's just not the style you're going for.

Your dogs are just beautiful!!
