Hot off my easel, this is a Tufted Puffin! This is done in Pastel and I painted about half of it on my vacation a couple weeks ago, then I finished it up at home. Many thanks to the wonderful photographer, Alan Wilson (of Natures pics online) for the reference photo I used for this painting.

C&C's welcome and appreciated!

I love the way you've painted the little Puffin! love the colors and also the BG.
The only thing that seems off to me is the way the feet 'set' on the rock.
Maybe adding in some shading beneath the feet to ground them more?

Thanks for the feedback, Barb! I really struggle with backgrounds, so I'm fairly pleased that this one turned out okay. As for the feet, Puffins cling to the sides of rocks with the claws on their webbed feet, so this stance is accurate. I hesitated to put shadows, since the diffused light is coming from in front of the bird, and any shadows would be behind him.

I decided to put in some subtle shadows and they seemed to work better in front of his feet than behind them. So what do you think--- better or?

Thanks, Pat! My mom loves Puffins, so I just may be giving it to her as a birthday gift!

My first introduction to Puffins was at the age of 7 yrs reading an Enid Blyton book - I think it was called Famous Five and Puffin Island or something. Since then, I have been a Puffin fan. I just love your colourful little guy. He is really delightful.

Thanks for the encouraging words, Nancy and Chammi!
Chammi: A friend of mine had the Enid Blyton book titled "The Sea of Adventure" and it featured some Puffins on the cover. I believe they were called Huffin and Puffin in the storyline.
