A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Watercolor Portrait Exchange
Project Leader: fun2cook
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Watercolor paints
Subject: Portrait
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Send your photo via pm to me (fun2cook) before joining the portrait exchange.

Snag the image you want to paint or paint as many as you like ... one or 100, it's up to you, your skill level and how much practice you want and how many people participate.

Please only submit one reference photo of yourself. If you have more than one reference photo, that's fine, just host it on your own site and give us the link in the discussion portion of the project where we can go check out your other reference photos.

It would be great to have unusual poses, not the standard front-on. (Some of us are "teeth" challenged, so if your photo doesn't show teeth, some of us would appreciate it.) Parts of a face, nose, ears, eyes are good, too. A side view with strong light will provide *values* so we can put in those darks!!!

It is open to all skill levels.

It's unnecessary to send your portrait to the person whom you paint but if you do feel inclined you can pm the person if you'd like to make it a post exchange too (that's up to you).

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=418)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Well, Cheese, Mary Ann!
I suppose I could post the one I did 2 weeks ago of Pamps in purple hat since it is the same pose. Pamps: Get another reference photo, will'ya????

[EDIT] While I am making my post above Pamps is adding hers.
Now I am more confident about staking my claim:

Bethany - Got your photo and it is *posted.* :)

Fookie - Your pic is posted too! You'll need to get Pam to post a pic of herself in a purple hat for that to qualify. :)

Pam - not cheatin' you'll have to submit a new pic for a new portrait :)

The pic of Fookie is our Icon for this project btw.

Have fun all!

I did it!!!! and fookie and Pam are already cheating with their photo.

Clever fookie, hiding all the wrinkles, mind you if it was me it would only exagerate my bags:D

Pam!!! no teeth, no teeth, remember the challenged!!!!

By the way, this is my very own blond hair and I do not want it looking green, but I always wondered how I would look with red hair!!!!

M.A.

Yahoo! Uschi signed too! We're up to nine participants now that Uschi signed and I know there are a few more familiar faces who, as we speak, are rummaging through old shoeboxes for photos for this exchange.

Remember too, that you can upload reference images of yourself in the reference library and post a link here to it so that way we can add more images to this exchange. You can even add a page tucked away somewhere on your own site if you like.

Here's the old thread with the poll, thought it might be a good idea to mention it here too as there were many good suggestions re: reference pics, suggesting what colour your eyes and hair etc are so if you'd like to refer to it, just click on the following link:

Mary Ann, *clean hands* LOL...that's a good one!! I am NOT submitting the Pamps w/purple hat, not even the Pamps w/red hat, or the two Pamps I did before those...Yes! I've done 4 Pamps total and unless she submits a pic w/NO TOOFIES showing, I ain't doin' her again. I don't have time for toofies... So, Mary Ann, you are still the only cheater or, to use your vernacular, the only one with dirty hands. LOL. But nice try.

Ah, yes, I see the portrait of you done by Barb. It is very, very nice, good job Barb; you must be part Hare.

I'm still working on the two I snagged on my initial go-round. I have an all-day tomorrow on my volunteer job so I'll be as far behind as Pamps and Em--both vacationing, sigh...

M.A.
04-23-2003, 06:22 AM
em - :) Your reference photographs are amazing! I'm so happy to see your *tinyhead* in this project! lol. I love that photo with your cowgirl hat on! Have a nice vacation, we'll see you when you get back.

elankat - Too shy? We'd love to have you in this project. Come on in, the water's fine.

fookie - Only four paintings of Pam? My pampe stays ... and I don't feel tooo guilty about it. :) I love the portrait Barb did of me.

uschi - fookie changed her reference pic but she's still the icon for this project since she instigated it ... but I flipped it so that she's be watching over us instead of gazing out of the computer.

:D Just kidding, you know. I'm not shy at all.

I won't be able to paint anything for a while. I have an out of town guest coming and won't have much time. I can put up a pic in the meantime though.

Anyone have any preferences? Pink hair, blond hair, red hair, long hair, spiked hair, rennaissance clothing, elf ears, toofies, no toofies, sticking out tongue, with child, without child? I have lots to choose from. Anyone have a particular weird one that they'd like to try?

Can't wait to try and paint some of these great references that everyone has submitted. I need the practice. :)

Bethany! This portrait of Barb [Tig] very nice, very nice indeed! And you said you hadn't done any portrait work! Shame on you for lying to ol' folk like Auntie.

Tip: Next time on glasses, paint the negative space rather than the glasses themself. Then, just add a spot of color to draw attention to the frame [i.e., on Barb's left where the white of the paper shows.

This is as far as I managed to get tonight. Anyone notice that Em's only wearing one earring? I wonder if the other dropped out, I was tempted to give her a new one but maybe she likes it that way, so I didn't.

For a split second, I managed to have her eyes look out of the painting the same way her eyes look out of her reference photograph ... a split second ... then ... poof, she's looking over my shoulder again!

I know the hat is whitish but I was having fun with sepia ... I'll be scrbbin' and painting away at this one again soon but thought I'd share my progress since everyone else is too.

I like that.

Have a great night!

Pam - have a great trip.

Em - I hope you have a lovely trip too and that this is finished by the time you get back!!!

Best,

Uschi

LOL, gosh yes, I'm going to do Al. I did one of him which I emailed and did not post to the board. Just now I put another of Al on the board, which was not part of this project thread. So, this photo of him is down on the list, I have others to do first.

Thank you for compliments on my work. I wanted my MaryAnn to look like an infant, but I just couldn't get there--I' not in baby mode yet.

TeAnne looks exactly as I had pictured her. It was fun to do the reference she posted, I hope others will do her too.

Such good-o work is being posted here; I am enjoying it tremendously. Such a good idea, Mary Ann, I am spending more time than I had allotted, so I might slip in one with toofies, too. I tried click on the tiny head to get to the project and see the large sizes, so much detail is lost in the tiny heads. I guess the only way is through the Projects, right?

You know, Fookie, there isn't any rule that says we can't post the images here in the thread via the uploader too (although I think so long as they're in with the finished projects too ... that way it'll be really cool when everyone has their finished portraits and we can click on this page: http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/browse_final_all.php?proj_id=418 to see them all together).

Here's my final answer (sorry, just had to say that).

In any event, I'm very proud of her ear (the one on the viewer's right) and the band across her hat, maybe even the negative space in her glasses (even though they don't reference the green background and they probably should - although I think that green background was a mistake ... which still may be tweaked ... any suggestions?)

AND look closely, there's toofies!

Couldn't get her eyes to look in the same direction as the photo so I guess we'll just have to pretend that this is Em a few minutes after her pic was taken when something else caught her eye momentarily, probably a beautiful flower that she was thinking making even more beautiful by painting it.

Best,
Mary-Ann

Gia, thanks for your kind words.

Al - I guess the only way we can tell what size people are painting is if people post that information. Generally, I've been practicing on 5x7-ish or larger portraits, I figure if they end up in the mail then that's a decent size to post. Am eager to gain a bit more confidence, then I'll move it up in size. I have some figure drawings from about five years ago that are mural size, they were really fun to do (but terribly hard to scan lol)

Well folks - I signed up for the project.

I posted a 25 year old B&W reference photo I used for an election leaflet.

This is my favourite photo - when I was in my prime. My hair was auburn BTW - sadly now "sandy" if not grey :D

Goodness knows what my portrait will be like, I in the middle of a slump and am producing a slew of half finished paintings.

Think I'll get my pad out and go straight in with the paint like Fookie does

Hey Phillip..... no one's ever done my portrait before, so I'm honored that you chose me! Somehow you knew my eyes were blue!;) This is a really good likeness and I agree that hair is hard to do...... it's really dark brown with bits of red hightlights (but looks quite black in the photo) but you caught the true color in that lowest curl on my collar bone. It's definitely me.... good job!:D

Thanks Nandie, I am glad you like it.

Hi Phillip,
This portrait of nandie is fun! I especially like the work along her neck, great contours going on there. Generally speaking, this is a good interpretation of the reference picture and I look forward to seeing more of your work here!

Thank you fun2cook.

I had fun painting her.

I am very happy I came across this site, It's great to be able to share my paintings with you all, even though there no where as good as some of the others. Don't your making me blush.

Maybe I should start another painting, I need to work on Skin colors in watercolor. have not worked out a good basic color to use for skin tones as yet. I don't know how I got that color in the painting I have done, I just kept adding color till I thought it was right. but I think its a bit muddy looking on the face.

Good plan. Right now, I'm sketching Gia.

hint: Try to keep your washes fresh and lean towards transparent colours because skin has a transclucent quality.
Don't forget to add the *darks.* - meaning, remember the value studies you first posted here? That is key. (and a challenge and something I am working towards).

Have fun.

ok, you guys make me blush, especially you Philip. i'm really not a genius, genios, genious (how DO you spell that?) just a lucky person created with a love of art and a stubborness to overcome all my handicaps.

We had perfect weather for family pictures this afternoon at the Beach. Also had my Senior pics taken, so i have alot of new ones to choose from. if you want the current reference, you had better save it to your hard drive, cause i'm going to replace it with a current one.

allright, see yall later

PORTRAIT OF NANDIE:
Phillip! Good-o on you for joining the exchange. We're all learning portrait work in here, so no need to be shy. I love the hair, is that gouche or perm. white streaks? Adds a lovely dimension, whever it is. For eyelashes, group them a bit more, rather than individual commas, practice on a separate sheet first, though, to see if you like the effect.

Yes, Nandie is very beautiful and you painted her to show that.

Some people are requesting that I change their reference photo and I'm going to have to decline.

First of all, all of the reference pics are good ones. There's not a dud in the bunch!

The site administrators wisely gave us tools so we can self administer this site. That means if you have more reference pics (and that's a *great* thing) then you can upload them into the Reference Library (the way babybrush and mustcreate have) or even host them on a page on your own site (such as lynn_cyr and I have done).

Further, if you really want to submit a new pic, I think it would be great if you submitted it into the actual thread. We'd have reference to it here as well. And I think we all like the variety.

Moreover, if you want to do someone's portrait but would prefer another reference pic, you can always pm the person and ask.

So I think it's up to you to continue submitting more reference pics but use alternative ways to do so. I for one will be grateful.

Uploading your reference pic once in an honour to me, twice, three times ... I dunno, it feels like work. In any event, generally, my concern is that if upload and reload pics (and you run into little issues that eat time here and there when you're doing it) then I'll just end up doing that instead of painting. For example, about 35 minutes ago, I placed my sketch of Gia on my scanner, then I came to the site ('cause I'm nosy) and haven't gotten back to scan it since.

Over time, we'll hopefully get a lot of people in this project and that if I encourage changing reference pics then eventually I'll only spend more changing pics than painting -- not a goal for me.

I'm not completely unwilling to change reference pics but I think there needs to be a really compelling reason to do so ...

Best,
Mary-Ann

New members should still pm their ref pic to me so I can upload it with the rest.

babybrush
04-26-2003, 12:37 PM
Sorry Maryann, i realized that it would be a pain only AFTER i asked you to change it. instead, i just posted the new references in my reference library. feel free to use any of them anyone.

Question??? Should I be posting questions and WIP's here ??? or is this thread for comments on finished work only.

Gail, it's up to you ... if you'd like to discuss a WIP go for it! I think your portrait of Sylvielu is looking really good. I'm thinking a greenish background would be good because her skin tones seem to be redish (okay, I'm just a BIG fan of complementary colours, that's all!!!)

Actually, it seems to me to be a good idea to post questions here, I know I'm here to learn and think all this opportunity for pointers and practice will help me too.

I was wondering, can I paint a photo from a participants Reference Images, or should they only be the original photos posted.??

M.A.
04-26-2003, 06:47 PM
Yes, Phillip. You can paint from the other reference images that are listed for people ... :) We even have some links on the Project Page for this Project to take you to some more reference pics participant have posted.

I think that would add interest and variety to this project.

Good idea.

Thanks for the comments. Its a section of a photo posted by Pam some time ago. As I am visiting Pam in June, I saved it. Here it is:

Gia, thank you. I love these projects. They are fun! I have a bit of time, till about Tuesday for sure, so want to do a couple more. Anyone who wants anything I did, is welcome to have it. I am happy to ship it.
It is very enjoyable seeing all the different and neat styles people work in. this project idea was great!!! Someone is very smart!
I am kinda doing this for a living by accident. I always painted people and I started getting people asking when I was in my late teens. I guess alot comes from doing it all the time, out of love of painting. And...I am not good at anything else in this world! lol!
