A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: The Other Hand
Project Leader: rapolina
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Watercolor paints
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

This project is to challenge you to paint with the other hand rather than the one you usually paint with. I think that it could be difficult at the beginning, but after a few tries, maybe we will discover a new way of painting, a new way of mixing colors and other surprises.

So the restriction is to use your left hand to paint if you're right-handed....or vice versa! I've never tried this, nor seen anyone try it, and am curious what the outcome will be. Join with me in being adventurous!

You can choose your own subject (check out the Image Library for copyright free images!) and share the results with all of us!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=412)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

hi everyboby!
yesterday night i did my first attempt with my left hand: interesting and less difficult than it could seem! i also rinsed my brush with the left hand!;)

i tried to paint something not abstact, it looks a child paint, but tonight i will work on it again. then i''l show you (now my daugghter WITH the digital camera is on holidays...:( )

Enjoy, it's funny!!!

This is what i did last night!
I layed a backgroud wet on wet and when dry, i painted the flowers and the leaf... it seems painted by a kid, but it's just the first one;)
it's not as difficult as i thought! it's surprising that i can handle a brush and paint something else than a bad stroke:)

Rapolina, this is beautiful and joyous. How long did it take do you think?

Adrienne

Rapolina,

I have two questions about your project:

Question 1: I have drawn and painted with my left hand before. I did this in order to try to take the thought process out of the effort because I was trying to let my painting discern an illness for a friend, at their request. Although it worked on that level, it honestly didn't look much different than my painting with my right hand. So what I'm asking is if it would defeat the goals of the project if the result was similar to what would happen using the normal hand?

Question 2: Because of the chemicals involved in traditional materials, I made a health-decision to be a digital artist several years ago. My software, Painter, offers an astonishing variety of tools, including the ability to paint in watercolor. Would you allow me to enter, knowing that my watercolor painting would be digital?

I know you also hang out in the Abstract Forum, and entered Kali's Emotion Project. On that thread, I described digital painting more fully, including the fact that my M.O. is to paint freehand, and create my own brushes. If you have any questions, please access that project, which contains links to the makers of my Wacom tablet, my Painter software, etc. I hope that you will allow me to participate, if you feel it is appropriate.

Also, on the 6th page of that thread, I posted links to two items I've posted on Wet Canvas in the past that were done in Painter.

I hope that you will allow me to participate!!!

rapolina
04-24-2003, 03:34 AM
thank you to whoo signed!:) :) :)

to Adrienne: of course you can partecipate!
the restiction to watercolor is very loose, I think it is due to my friendness with this medium, while i'm not able with the others. and if you can paint with your right hand as well with your left one, it is an interesting result anyway!

ciao, rapolina.

Thanks  Rapolina

Oh dear, I signed up, and now I've got the willies. I don't yet have an idea for this project -- plus -- I'm the world's slowest painter. And that is with my NORMAL HAND. So doing this left-handed may take weeks... months... years!!! :D

<-- *sneaks in the back door*

This is an interesting project, I think I'll try it (although just doing watercolor is a challenge for me :o ) I can write left-handed (sorta ;) ) but I haven't tried painting that way yet.

I once read somewhere that "Your left (or vise-versa) hand knows everything your right hand does, it just doesn't have the muscle memory. It also "sees" everything in a mirror image so you have to think that way (i.e. try working your composition right-to-left if you normally work left-to-right) the hard part is getting the left brain to shut up and stop telling you its backwards. :p

i add my first drawing made with my left hand (i'm rightie).
very strange result! . it's veri different fron the tree i draw with my right hand: it is huge, big, with solid branches and roots, while i generaly draw slim trees.
unique point of connession: the absence of leaves (don't ask me why...)
sorry if the paper has a hole... it is the back of an old document...:p .

Yes, you're probably right about the bowl shading. I'm also planning to do a paint in a few spikes, to make it look a bit more cactus-like. There's probably quite a high chance of destroying the painting when I try that, so I thought I should take a photo first.

I should probably have a go at painting the same thing using my right hand, and see how the two versions compare.

Actually, my first aim is to get transparency.
I use watercolors W&N and choose my colors on this basis:
-colors with only one pigment
-only transparent pigment

in this way, i can avoid muddy effects and multiple layers stay anyway transparent.

I would love to give it a try.
Should be interesting.
I have participated in some workshops in this subject and it
is fascinating what comes out. Most of the people who
did some drawing at the course, felt like they were 5 again and loved the experience.

Here is my contribution and what I found when doing it.

My right hand ( dominant hand) was shaking when I used the Left Hand - almost as though it objected. It was a funny experience and feeling.
This process is often used for people who have a creative block ie writers or painters. By using the 'other hand' to write you force your brain to work from the opposite side. It works!!

I had to have about 4 tries before I produced anything other than kindergarten painting.

Fun and a good workout

Thanks for suggesting it.
