Another 20 minutes or so - so over an hour at this point

approx 10 x 10 on arches 90lb cold press

Not sure why the uploader is being so dang difficult. I needed to re save both these pics in order to get them to upload.....grrrrr!!!

UGH...really hating this now. It was so nice before I started on the thistles...heavy handed VALRI gets in there and then it's all over but the crying. This is at the 2 hour mark...not sure what I will do now...blah!

There's always pastel overlay, my go to fix for disasters.

Very interesting to see the process here. The big washes of colour are seductive.

Yes that and ink!! Always my go to for fixes too....

Teaching that to my class right now...they are all hooked on pastel overlay on their watercolors whether it's a fix or not!!!

If anyone knows me at all then you know how hard it was for me to not go DARK with this bird....I made myself use a little itty bitty brush and go slow...super slow AND then I walked away WAY before I wanted to...I kinda like it!!
All tolled this guy took about 2.5 hours.

I was hoping to save these wonderful thistles with pastels but ALAS it's a lost cause BUT in the spirit of...blah, blah, blah - here it is!! TA-DA...I do like how the sky turned out and the rest - well, not so much.

I love the Pelican and the thistles also - both are beautiful! Sometimes we work on a painting so much, that we can't see it ojbectively, but I think you've done a wonderful job on both, even if you don't think so yourself!

That pelican is AWESOME and the background works so beautifully with it. Its a definite keeper, that is if it doesn't sell before the paint dries. Congratulations on knowing when to walk away, it is a lesson I have yet to learn. Love your thistles as well, I I have to admit I did see Mr eraser heads face in them after you put the thought in my mind:lol:  and maybe a scotch guard or two   but they are pure scotch thistle now and they look pretty good to me.

So glad you kept the pelican whitish and I love the red/pinks you used for his shadows. It's an outstanding painting. Thistles look good, the sky color is a perfect complement for the purples. You could still print a copy and try the pastel overlay on the copy to see how you like it. Glad you're teaching some tricks of painting to your students. Saves some agony when things to amiss.
