The first image below is cross posted from the Watercolors forum where I normally post, but I decided to make a thread here to share the progress of this painting as it develops. Indy is my dog, a 14 year old Jack Russell, sweet as pie. This painting is 11 x 11, done in watercolor on 300 lb Fabriano Artistico paper.

Step 1: First washes. You can see my gridded reference photo above the painting. And next to the painting, a lovely surprise from my DH. Got to keep the Muse's energy up, right?! :D :D :D

Step 2: Building up details in various areas, plus a couple of washes on the background to push it back. I made the tapestry more green than it actually is to pop Indy more strongly to the foreground.

More to come...

Questions, critiques and comments always welcome!

Step 3. Putting in some of the darks to start getting a feel for the "drama" I want to preserve through contrasting values.

Coming along nicely! Cute JR. I also have a dog named Indy(mine is short for indigo), although he is a Doberman.
Tasty looking "surprise", now I must go find something to satisfy my sweet tooth:)

Coming along nicely. I love the greens... very rich.

Step 4. Added eye details and more depth of color in the dog's coat. Still some deeper shadows to put in on the underside of her neck...work continues. Now kind of at that "yikes, don't screw this up" stage!

Step 5. More shadows, more glazes, more details, and done (I think). I'm still debating whether I need to glaze the tapestry behind her to push it back but for now I like the green. Guess I will stare at it a few days before deciding. Enjoy!

If I ever have a dog named Indy, he'd be named after Indiana Jones! :) Awesome watercolor painting.

Cute! Nicely painted and a very adorable subject. I really like the looseness of your paint application too - beautifully handled.
