View Full Version : Horse portrait (acrylics) - WIP

It's been quite a while since my last post. I just wanted to share my latest painting in progress. This is a portrait for a friend of her horse, Bailey. Acrylics on 30cm x 40cm MDF panel.
I've been working on it on and off since around Christmas, but I have to admit that this one has been a real struggle so far, although I'm not really sure why. It's going a bit easier now that his face is starting to take shape though. Hoping to have him all done by the end of this month.
Any C&C welcomed, as always.

The eyes are fantastic...great start! :)

Thank you! :)
I did some more work on him tonight.
Have worked the area around the eye on the right a bit more, I can see that something is definitely not right about it. I tried both flipping the photo above on the computer and overlaying the reference I was given, and I think that it juts out too far as well as the angle of the brow overlapping it being wrong.
So, next step tomorrow evening will be trying to fix that before I go any further.

Mishi, now you have the shaped blocked out I find it begins to move along. Looking good. Keep at it, you'll get over that hump. I'll be in the gallery.

Thanks all! So after a few days I've managed to get some more work in on him. Definitely starting to feel happier about it now, although I'm still not quite sure about that eye.

I've been studying the eyes, as you had mentioned you thought something might be off. I'm no expert and might be way off:) , but I hope you do not mind my trying to help.
Hope you don't mind my taking your photo and adding the lines to help show what I mean-
Is the placement of the eye, the problem? Maybe increasing the size/shape of the viewer's left eye might help?
Again, I'm no expert, but hope this may be of a bit of help.

Bard that is an awesome tool.
This is very nice Mishi. Look forward to seeing this one come along.

I think this is looking great. Perhaps Barb has a point in that the eye nearest to the viewer would be a little larger. I'm looking forward to watching this progress.

Thanks for the advice all!
It's been a while, but I finally have another update. I apologise for the terrible lighting - one of these days, I will take a photo in real daylight!
I fixed up his eyes a bit (including darkening the area around them) and finished his ears. I've started blocking in his nose now. Once I've refined his nose and neck, I can move onto one of my favourite bits in the process - painting the mane :)

Well, he's finally done and off to his owner :) I was pretty happy with how it turned out in the end, after the struggle to get there. His owner loved it, which I was really happy about. :)
Thanks very much to everyone for all their support and advice! :D
