View Full Version : Spinone pup WIP(sort of)

My latest undertaking is a small pastel on Ampersandbord, 8x10. Subject ref. generously contributed by Tracy Davies/Monticani Spinoni.
It has been giving me fits! I was unhappy with the browns(the color of this pup is a brown roan), and for the LIFE of me, I just couldn't get the brown right. They were too reddish/rusty.
You can see the progression of the browns(I hope it is reflected in these images), now a bit closer to what I am after.
I believe I made the original mistake of not putting down a good dark base, I just used a few various darker browns(ie, umber, burnt umber, chocolate).
So, I had to back up and go over with a dioxide purple, then layer on the browns(thank goodness for tooth available on Ampersandbord!:o )
I still have a way to go, but it is more to my liking now.
I still need to rework the base under the muzzle to achieve the same /and darker browns.
Sorry for lack of stage progression, but as I said, this thing was close to being tossed:evil: .
Here is the ref. and the two stages of the painting-
Any comments welcomed!
Sorry for my terrible photography abilities.

I think you're making very good progress on this one, the white fur is looking nice and wiry, the expression and head shape are very good, keep going, it will be fine. I like the ampersand board for pastel too, it takes a lot of layers and the pastel seems to stick to it well.

Thanks Lexy! Doing wire hair is a bit challenging for me, so glad you think it is going in the right direction. I was just thinking the fur on the face/muzzle seems a bit long, so i'm keeping an eye to that. I hope to have it finished this weekend.

It's not the best reference to be working from. That dog looks a bit like a rabbit to me! I think you are handling it well

It's coming along well, I like the texture of the fur.

What a gorgeous dog. Well done:thumbsup:

Just love that expression.

Thanks Jayde. LOL, well maybe looking like a rabbit would help her catch one?
The Spinone Italiano, is a hunting breed, though I believe they use them for bird hunting, maybe rabbits...not sure.:)
Kanielle, thank you as well! The fur texture and coloring has been a challenge as it is supposed to resemble a brown roan, which for those not knowing, is a bit of a salt/pepper effect, with the brown and white hairs on the coat.
Thank you Lisa and Chammi! and Chammi, the expression is exactly why I chose this ref.! Loved the expression as it appears this baby has just been caught in some mischief.
I'm nearing the finish line now, just a bit more to do on the nose and muzzle area. Please don't hesitate to let me know if anything looks out of whack as I can still make a few changes.
I've decided the Title will be "Puddle? What Puddle?"
Comments always welcomed.

Thanks so much Linda and Rockport123!
I must admit, I will be GLAD to get this one off my easel!
I don't know why it has been such a fight on this one! I know I should have done the BG sooner:eek: , but just wasn't sure I was going to do one until almost the last minute:rolleyes: . And I know that as soon as I did the BG, it started coming more easily.
Another mistake I made was the surface color choice, being a grey Ampersand board. I think a tan or even a white would have served this coloring more easily. Until I put in the BG colors, the painting looked dead. Then after the BG, I knew to add some of the BG colors to the painting to "wake it up", LOL.
I will still add more highlights as well as finish the muzzle hair and finish up the nose. But...I HAD to stop for awhile, will try to finish this evening.
Thanks again for your encouraging comments!

Beautiful Work ;-)

Yea! It's finally finished and off my easel!
I'm going to let it set awhile and look at it in a few days to see if any thing needs changing, but for now it is Done!
I wanted to ask what you all think f the BG? Does it work with her colors? I never know about Bg's, my weakest spot. So any input is welcomed!

Hmmmmm:confused: ....not sure what happened to my response to Jayde and my image of the final, (dissapearing posts?) but I am reposting-
Thanks Jayde, very kind of you!
After asking for some help from the Pastel forum, I accepted their advice about the nose needing changing. It had been bugging me and having fresh eyes, really helped me see where I needed to make a few changes.
So, anyway, here is the absolute final of this painting.:) I'm much happier now!
