Thanks for hosting Mo, I was immediately drawn to this ref and have been looking forward to sitting down and doing it. It is acrylic on an old used canvas that had texture medium plonked right in the middle. I put aquadhere all over it to try and spread out the texture but it is not working like I thought {Idont own any texture medium). The paint just seems to wash off it. Anyway I am not that happy with it and am going to start it again but just do the one horse this time in portrait I think. This took 50 minutes with most of it done with a big 4 inch brush and it measures 24 x 20 inches
I'm going straight back to redo it so watch this space

well I have been too clever for my own good, this is the 3rd attempt, the second was just too awful for words. Two hours and I should have stuck with the first one. Ah well it was good practice.
Thanks for looking

I like the loose painterly effect of the first one, and I think the horses are well proportioned.

Christine, I think you are being way too hard on yourself, both are really lovely paintings, you have all the movement, proportions and gorgeous colours, they were excitedly galloping towards me thinking I had carrots, when they found I didn't they just disgustedly turned away from me. :) You've captured that moment so well! And two for the price of one, Who can complain at that, I love them both and thank you so much for taking the time to paint them.

Oh boy I know that feeling! I do love the first one. And as you said, practice. I say that every WDE!:D Hey, at least you have a photo of it for printing and framing!

Actually the first version was quite stunning, all the colours in the horses coats. Time to step away from the canvas, try painting something else... I think the horses might be haunting you...

I thought the first stunning too - certainly on the screen it looks so!
So full of action!

Ah well, we all learn - but at least you still have the file for it:D

I like both these Christime but, actually I too prefer the first one. Maybe it is the texture medium causing the paint to move but whatever it is - it has given the whole painting a great sense of movement - those ponies are just trotting right out of the canvas.

Isn't it FEB not May??...lol
And I do love the first version of the horses. Love the colors and excitement you created and it's too bad about the texture medium in the middle. Not that it matters now but maybe putting some scrunched up tissue over it and gluing it down would have helped....??? Not sure as I've never used any texture medium myself.

No time spent painting is ever wasted, Christine! Each piece has it's own good points, IMHO. The looseness of the first and the strength of color in the second are what esp appealed to me.
Good painting!

The sketches have the most important thing in an animal picture for me...life. If I have to choose between them I'd go for the first for its greater spontaneity, looseness and movement. The line is less emphatic than in many of your pictures yet the modelling is still convincing.
This is really nice stuff.

They are both great, Christine!

Love the first one. I thought the distraction was on purpose before I read your text. The colors are lovely as are the horses. Beautiful painting.

I dunno what it looks like out your window, but out my window it's anything but May!:D (snowstorm goin' on out there) So I changed your title to Feb 10, but if I did that in error, pm me and I'll change it back to May.
I love the first one (I also thought the textures were deliberate) but the WDEs are for experimenting aren't they; anyway I like the colours and style in the second one, too.

The first one definitely has life, movement and freedom I love it! The second is colourful but not so lively!

Take it from a horse-person, that first one is brilliant! It's so full of life, color and movement and I'm so sorry that you painted over it as I wish I could have painted something like that! Never mind - the WDE is for experiementing isn't it and if we don't experiment we dont learn.

We are our own worst critic - your first one was great in my opinion I would have left it there. But I like the colour and depth of the second.

The first one is more delicate and it looks like they are mated and enjoying each other's galloping away. The second one shows more of a stunned look by both as to what is this in front of us. The colors in the second one is really pretty with boldness.

I love the liveliness of the first, but also adore the colors in the second

02-15-2012, 03:19 PM
Both are awesome and shall I say FANTASTIC???!!! I hope you don't destroy it. Really sings with the texture as it goes with the subject matter. Love it!

02-15-2012, 03:55 PM
ok, i figured out what you need to do: you need to endow your Muse with the power to smack your hand and say: DONE, step away..... o, hey, dont we ALL need to do that............... do not kick yrself anymore or you wont be able to sit comfortably to do the new one this week.... (i dont know or care for horses that much, but man, you realllly had something there!!!.... ok, one little kick.... )
