View Full Version : New Project For You!

Ok lately I've noticed that there's been some problems mastering values, so this CP project is for all of you to master the values in a drawing.

Here's the rules!

1. It has to be a still life from a photo...make sure to post the photo of it too. There are some great references in the library, or take your own.

2. It must have an object that is of a dark value, one of medium value and one of light value.

3. You may only use 3 pencils...., white, a dark color of your choosing. IE: blue violet, ultramarine, dark green, dark brown, black grape, etc. and a complimentary color of whatever color you chose. (for ex the compliment of dark green would most likely be dark cherry...and visa versa)

4. This must be done on a light or white colored ground...white, cream, etc.

The idea is to get all values from white to black and everything inbetween.

OK folks you ready?

when I get back from teaching my class, I'll try and find a value chart for you.

Is there any time limit on this Arlene? I would love to have a go but as you know I cannot upload any of my work right now and I am not certain when I will be able to, so if it has no deadline then you can count me in.

It sounds tough but the sort of project I need to stretch me artistically and I find I work better if I have some focus, ie, rules and guidelines.:)

Thank you Arlene this is a great idea!

When I am up and running with a scanner or digi camera can I have a go at your other projects? I have viewed them all and would love to work my way through them? I would very much appreciate your input on them when I have completed them or in a WIP as I progress . I will not get defensive at anything you have to say, as I want to learn and my main aim is to grow as an artist but especially as a CP artist. That is of course if you have time -I know you are very busy!!

Hugs,

JAZZ;)

I tried a still life project, remember? It felt like having my teeth pulled. In fact, it's still not finished. I just can't seem to get into it. I may do the egg project one of these days. Maybe. Of course, I've been saying that for 9 months. :o

I was actually thinking of joining - but there's no way in heck that I have time - I gotta finish my commission that I started but stopped on b-cuz I had 2 finish my flower 1st b-cuz of some certain moderartor's idea...YEAH! So what if it WAS a good idea?!?

And I have 2 Tarot cards that I signed up 4 and this other certain person who started the project would probably snatch me bald headed if I didn't get that done!!

So as u can c I'm caught between being bald or being called a Chookhttp://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/12-Apr-2003/18803-chicken.gif. OOOOHHH THE Pressure !!!! C!! now I've gone kooky!!http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/12-Apr-2003/18803-kooky.gif

here's my setup....don't know when I'll start it, but just the photo is a start...:)
I love these dolls, they are genuine Japanese articles, the dolls sent from Japan byfriends...the other one (both are my daughters' dolls) is even more adorable...
you can guess I'll be using red and green with white...

I haven't used my cps for a few months (having a pastel obsession, although I still lurk here almost daily to ooh and ahh over all the beautiful work), but I don't think I can resist one of Arlene's challenges!
I'm trying to get a sense of what you're suggesting here. Are the complementary colors to be layered together in a monochromatic color scheme? Or...?
Any rules about underpainting, blending w/colorless marker, etc.?
To anyone who hasn't tried Arlene's challenges and projects yet- do it! They are well worth the effort.

I am doing the coffee pot and apple. I downloaded it last week. So we shall see.

use the two pencils anyway you feel that will help you achieve the values you need...

I would personally use the black cherry under the dark green to get an even darker green shadow...the idea is to get the full value range.

Ok here is a value key for you...taken from Verdaccio's article...and I'm also including a number of articles I think you might want to read through first if you haven't already done so.

No time limit? Ok then I'm in 2 *sigh* - can't resist a challenge. But Leanne - I don't do still lives either so if I'm gonna do it u have 2 do it 2 - PLLLLLEEEEEAAAASSSSEEEE!!! It'll give u the excuse 2 do 1 - and then u can say u did it & just get it out of the way - right?;) :D

I took a still life pic yesterday. Picked my two colors. Know what paper.
Today, I will sketch the image and research how I will do the values:cat:

I am not sure where to start:confused:

Hopefully someone will post their drawing soon!

OK. I am picking the wine bottle to be done on white... don't know what paper yet. Does that mean I'll be working only with a set of two complementaries???

Have to sign up somewhere or stating it here is enough? (this is my very first WC project, you can see...)

arlene

do you folks want me to make it an official WC project?

i too am doing the one with the apple and the jug ... like the others i am not 100% sure of the colours / values :) .... but i will give it a go ....reading through the supplied links :)

i am a little confused over the values...with two colours ie. i get the grayscale value slider and that whole process but i am confused on valus with with your complimentary colours .. i was thinking of choosing a bluish purple and a yellowy orange ... so i would be thinking that the yellow would be used for some of the lighter values and the blue for the darker values ? or would they hold the same values if they were applied in the same intensity ??

now i am really confused !! lol :)

arlene
04-14-2003, 08:07 PM
what happens when u put orange under blue?

what if you put the blue under the orange?

I would suggest using two fairly dark colors...such as dark green/black cherry or tuscan red
