Welcome to the WetCanvas! Reference Image Library's FAQ page!

The following are some frequently asked questions about the library.  If after reading this, and exploring on your own, you still have questions, feel free to post a message in the Site Discussions forum.

Q: What types of images are in the reference library?
All sorts! Images of landscapes, cityscapes, inanimate objects, people, animals, and much more.

Q: Who owns all of these images?
No one owns all of them. As the library is a collaborative effort between the members of WetCanvas!, everybody who posts an image to this library by posting an image agrees that: they "grant the general public the perpetual, irrevocable license to use, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt, publicly perform and publicly display such Content for any purpose. They furthermore agree that they exclusively own the license to grant the general public the right to use, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt, publicly perform and publicly display such Content for any purpose." However, the ownershp of the image remains with the person who uploaded it to the library.

Q: So, if I upload an image, am I giving explicit permission for others to use the image as a reference for painting, drawing, etc?
That is correct. Not only that, you will be held liable if it turns out you fraudulently posted images to this library and others used them based on your representation of ownership. Contributors of images retain general reproduction rights to the image itself (in photo form).

Q: This is very cool! What else can I do in the library?
In addition to the many images in the library, you'll also find a number of shortcuts and tools to make your life easier. For example, on thumbnail pages, look for special options to view a simulation of a certain image as a pointillistic or impressionistic painting, a "sketch", or a simple monochrome/BW composite (which is great for studying values). These conversions are done on-the-fly (see the miniaturized example of an impressionistic painting conversion below - the original images are bigger, of course). More such educational tools are coming!

Q: I have some great photos! How can I contribute?
It's easy. If you aren't already a member of our virtual community, please join now (it's free, so why not!). Once you've joined, all you need to do is log into our library, using your community name and password. Note: if you are already a member, and are logged into the forums, you won't have to log in again (if you are using cookies, of course).

Q: What if I have some suggestions for a new category of images?
Just let us know! Just post a message in the site discussions forum, and let us know what your thoughts are.

Q: I noticed that many images do not have descriptions or keywords associated with them.  This obviously makes it hard to search for things - help!
We "batch" load many images from time to time - we will eventually get around to documenting them. Also, as any registered member can upload images to the archive, it is a responsibility of each member to provide an adequate title, description, and keyword list for each image.

Q: I recently went on a trip and took over 200 photos - I don't want to have to upload these 1 at a time. What is the fastest way to get a large number of images into the system?
If you can put them on a CD, contact us at support@wetcanvas.com - you can snail mail it to us and we'll batch upload them for you. If you do not have access to a CD burner, contact us anyway - we can set you up with a limited FTP window that you can upload to your heart's content via FTP. This also holds true for folks sponsoring WetCanvas! GetAway events.
