This painting was created by Fantin-Latour as a tribute to his friends and fellow artists. Little did he know at the time that he was actually creating a snapshot of some of the early founders of Impressionism. Among the figures represented in the painting are Emile Zola, Frederic Bazille, Edouard Manet, Renoir, and Claude Monet.
